I have worked with people living with Dementia for 40 years in New Zealand. In 1989 we introduced music to people with Alzheimers and the results were amazing. This moving video of this gracefull woman has made me cry. I have always believed in the inner person stays intact within the deterioration of the brain. The above reinforces that my beliefs have been right along since my early nursing years in the early seventies in the Netherlands that people with Dementia need specific care with creative intervention awakening memories. Lovely how she comes alive with withoutmusic. My mother was in a rehabilitation center for two weeks. Its awful to hear people screaming for hours at night and nothing is done. I would see these patients left in wheel chairs, almost falling out of them with employees passing by and not flinching. People if you have a loved one abandoned, please visit them. It only takes 15 minutes out of your life but it means the world to them.

This serves extremely well as something which doctors and caregivers can learn from as a means to provide better emotional care to such people who suffer from Alzheimer's. Once we're able to pinpoint those special moments in a person's life that stay with them permanently, even while the terrible disease eats away at their mental faculties, by providing the right stimulus, it can promote a greater sense of emotional health and happiness for the person. While it's sad to hear of Ms. Gonzalez's passing, it's comforting to know that she's not only now at peace, in a better place, and dancing as she used to, but that this wonderful provision by her caregiver was able to give her some happiness in her last years, so it would not be as tragic or depressing. God bless that gentleman, whomever he was, whether a family member or a caregiver, or both, for providing the beautiful music to entertain her and stimulate the happy memories of her younger years. To the good memory of Marta Gonzalez, may you dance among the angels in the heavens, as you did in life, in peace and joy, forevermore.

The music associated with important times or events in our lives can bring back not just the emotions but often the memories. If someone you love has dementia, try to discover what music they listened to and create a personal playlist. An iPod and some headphones has been shown to bring people who were considered in a vegetative state back to speaking, recognizing family members and just generally being in contact with the world. Please also consider making playlists for your older friends and family members, and for yourself, while memories are still largely available so that if they or you develop dementia, you have a longer life of happiness and awareness. It takes some work but it’s an affordable therapy that’s more effective than some meds costing 1000s, and if “therapy” - listening to favourite music - continues throughout the lifetime, the number of years living at home with support is greatly extended. This is wonderful for individuals but also just makes so much economic sense.

@AZdudeAZ3 жыл бұрын
Personal opinion. She did not get her memory back as indicated by the title of this upload. The music triggered her brain to command her body to move according to the memory of her dance routine. The dance routine was stored in her brain neurons and was not erased by the disease. We have a friend in our dance community diagnosed with Alzheimer's. But when she hears music and see people dancing in the ballroom, she can follow a dance lead as if she doesn't have dementia. That’s the magic and power of music.

La música es una de las cosas que la mente de los afectados por el Alzheimer retienen aún en sus últimos dias. No es raro que en los días previos a su deceso ellos murmuren o tarareen alguna melodía favorita, una y otra vez, como un último brillo de quiénes fueron.
