If you watch the new Coppelia by Alexey Ratmansky in La Scala, this variation is finished with Swanhilda turning her backside to the balcony and rising up the tutu. It is so amazing in character building!!! Nicoletta Manni is soo good in it.❤

Didn't Mayara Magri just make principal? She was really very polished and complete at YAGP! I noticed her in the corps of Manon when she was still in the corps and was happy to see her rise through the ranks. My first thought with Osipova (also now at the RB) was, why is she wearing a yarmalka? 🤣 When she was younger, she really excelled at these soubrette-type roles, and of course, her technique is unparalleled. Fun comparison! Yes, analyze Coppelia!

Loved this, so informative and so much fun. I'd never even considered that the variations for competition weren't taken straight from the ballet but it makes so much sense. I wish I'd seen this before I watched the Royal Ballet's cinema version with Marianela Nunez, I'd have been able to appreciate even more of the details. Would be very happy to watch a full analysis (late to this so perhaps you've already done it)! And for other ballets too. Off topic but have you seen the RB's series of ballet history videos on you-tube? (Quite old now but evergreen.) I think Mayara was the demonstrating dancer in some of them, that's where I first saw her dance. Was a really good series, I thought; would enjoy your thoughts on it... :-)

Please please do a Coppelia analysis; it is such a good ballet. My only problem with it is that it sometimes doesn't seem Dancy enough. I like the competition version of the solo better. I would like to see something a little bit more like it in the ballet, but with a bit more of the acting of the usual version. I know it's tough to get the story and character started, and still bring out the wow factor; (there's only so much music). I love the Coppelia music; Delibes was a genius. I like Sylvia and La Source too; and there is a lovely Opera Lakme that also includes a cool dance sequence.

OMG I'm SO glad you did this video!!! Watching Natalia perform Swanhilda in this ballet was actually also the moment where I was thrown into my obsession with ballet, and the first thing that caught my attention was the music because I recognized it from something else and that just grabbed me for the entire ballet. I've always loved the full-length version more because of that, but I LOVE the choreography for the competition version and it makes me a bit sad that Swanhilda doesn't dance that much for that variation in the full-length ballet. During the last time we performed Coppelia, our director/choreographer actually managed to combine both versions and I LOVED it. Also, I'm sure you know this, but there is a rehearsal for the Royal Ballet with Mayara as Swanhilda, so I almost wish you used that version just for fun, but Natalia IS my favorite dancer so I'm very happy to see her here It would be SO AMAZING if you could do a commentary on the whole ballet because it is my favorite ballet, and I'd love to watch you talk about the character dances, Swanhilda pretending to be Coppelia (probably my favorite thing that she does), and the really interesting 3rd act

Oooooooh. Memories. Was a young 'un. Went to NYC on my own. To dance. Had little clue about, well.. the Big City. One of the first things I saw.. went to see ABT, the rare air student section. I think, pretty sure it was Cynthia Gregory as Brunhilde, Coppelia. Heavenly. Next morning, went to one of my first ballet classes, a beginners class... and in walks Ms Gregory. I couldn't believe it. She, beginner's class?? Learned quickly I'd walked into The School of American Ballet, Balanchine's first studio (he was long gone to NYCB and Lincoln Center). I had no clue of the history of the studio tho.. just picked kinda from the phone book. Anywayz, each class the creme de la creme dancers would come in. More heaven. Ballet master came to me after the first beginner's class and suggested I should be in his 4:30. Um, me still clueless.. ok I guess. It was the professional class. More creme dancers came in. More heaven. Finally, after a couple of weeks, Ms Gregory came in, and after barre the ballet master turned the class into a partnering class. He said later so I could partner Ms Gregory. Can we say I'd now expired and gone to heaven? All this started with my first Coppelia as a young 'un. Your video brings such memories back... yay.

@@balletreign It was. A time of heaven. Endless things happening. One more and will let it go. Second class. I'd just seen Ivan Nagy and Natalia Makarova in, argh.. something epic. Can't remem. Anywayz, second class, I'd already settled in to that 'fav spot' that dancers make home. Was warming up, and in walks, yeah.. Ivan Nagy. Goes right to his fav spot I assume, which was my spot. Ops. Super nice tho. Get to the allegro and the ballet master sets the lines he wants. He selects only two in the first line. "Ivan", please.. here. Then, and me. OMGOMGOMGOMG. Terrified. It is amazing how much technique and expression one finds when purposely placed in the first line, in front of a slew of NY dancers. Yikes. It worked out tho. Loved that studio. /Will stop memory lane stories.

Splendido! Grazie!
