Turning towards the barre is a form of respect, since the barre is your ‘partner’. When dancing with an actual partner, you also turn towards them instead of turning your back on them (literally 😂).

i dont think its that traditional its kinda common sense in my ballet class. Even tho my country doesnt pay too much attention to dance and more to education and finances, we still follow some rules, just not all 😅so sorry to any hardcore dancers here but my ballet school doesnt even take late coming so seriously 💀

Actually there's also a technical aspect: beginners start learning the moves facing the barre and then the exercises evolve into dropping one hand or the other, and then facing to the sides only. That's how you learn to, balance to do the soutenus used to change sides. Turning towards the barre makes catching it much easier as you change hands, it helps a lot if you're even just slightly off balance as you turn. Try doing it and you'll see.
@dansasap

And also technically, if your working leg is the left (holding the barre with your right hand), and you start/finish in fifth position with the left foot in front, you then go yo relevé to turn, and the only way to turn is right, towards the barre. Try turning the other way, it simply doesn't work, unless you actually go to piqué to turn left, which is much more difficult.

I think turning to instead of away is the way we begin before we understand balance. When you think about it, this is how we learn to remain in our own space also. Though much of this is common sense, your presentation is delightful and helps everyone to remember. I would love to see your advice about “stuff”. Some dancers bring considerable baggage to class based on videos of pro level classes. Stuff management advice would be good.

This is also how I learnt it indeed. The barre is your extension to later pas de deux (and also why you shouldn’t crush it too strongly as later you will be holding someone’s hand you don’t want to grip too hard either).

The other thing they didn't mention is spacing on the floor. Always give yourself an arms and legs length away from others and stagger yourself between those in front of you so you and others behind so you can see in the mirror.

@@balletreign hey I wanted to ask if you think it's too late to start ballet at like 14 cause i was scared it's like too late most people start at like age 5 or 6 so
@CookieManatee
@CookieManatee 4 ай бұрын
@@Zoe-gt9ef Maybe i'm not the best to answer, but depends on what do you want to do with it. There are people who started late but still made it to dance as a professional in a company or freelancer, so if you work hard and stay dedicated it's possible, and if you just want it as a hobby, you are so not late. I started less than 2years ago at 27 and i'm told i'm making good progress and now do some (beginner) pointe work too. At 14 as a hobby you have PLENTY of time to work your way up. Just give yourself space to grow

I had operations on both my feet in my 3rd (and final) year of tertiary ballet study….I had to sit in on all classes to observe and when casts were removed I did floor barre during classical ballet lessons for quite a while. It was the most valuable thing I could do and absorbed everyone’s corrections. By the time I had to attempt dancing, the one teacher commented on how she could see I was applying everything I’d seen and heard (even though my feet were weak) Watching class has great benefits.

I haven't had the privilege to work with a live pianist since I was young. As an older adult without much talent (just undying love), I'm always in classes with recordings of music. If you are lucky enough to take classes with a live pianist, TREASURE THAT PERSON. It makes so much difference. Of course you can have a good class without one, but it's so much better with. Shout out to the ballet class pianists, we love you ❤

Thank you! Yes. I have been working as a pianist for ballet classes for years, and absolutely love it. Everyone I've worked with all say the same as you, and it makes sense. Even the same music sounds different from different pianists. And the same pianist can sound different from class to class, so it's always an inspirational time I think. And my Mom was always so proud of me for this work. She always said that she would not put her child into a ballet class that did not have live music. :) So thanks for saying pretty much what she has said all along, and also making me feel even more appreciated.

In all my years of training - from age seven until retiring I was never, ever late to class. In fact I can barely remember anyone being late to class. More important (!!!) you didn’t hit on dancer placements in the center. If it’s a professional class, your rank always determines where you get to stand. A Principal always stands in the front and the lowest members stand in the back - but also take your cue from a more revered dancer who may want to stand in the back because she’s just marking the class or only staying for a segment of class. Other times - especially at a more elite school - the teacher places the students in the front and/or center as a way to reward the better dancers. The strongest dancers with the best techniques should always have right of way. When doing a diagonal the same thing applies. Never talk or gossip in class, don’t hang on the barre while others are doing combinations. Never chew gum. I’ve never heard of anyone asking for a bathroom break. We always applaud the teacher at the end of class.

As someone with asthma who grew up dancing, bring your inhaler into the studio with you and set it somewhere out of the way- whether that's at the front by the mirror, or the side of the room, or the back corner, wherever, put it there. You can ask the teacher, and usually, there's a spot they'd prefer you to put your inhaler in. I've been in some classes where water bottles in the studio were encouraged to keep people from actually leaving the room when they need a drink, and there's a space to put the water bottles. If your class is like that, put the inhaler there with the water bottles.

Love all this advice (honestly I love anything that speaks to etiquette nowadays) But especially the habit of personally thanking teacher/partner/pianist-this is like what we do at the school where I work. The culture is for each student to come up at the end of class/period and say “thank you” and shake hands. I think it goes a long way toward seeing class as a privilege and ennobling learning, but also, it’s so cute when little kindergartners squeak out a thank you and stick out their hand to be shaked ❤

When I had taken classes at Robert Joffrey's NYC studio, the company came into my class. This was a time when Mr. Joffrey was living. A very unusual surprise to have the company suddenly enter just at the barre class to begin. All of us, dancers in class, stepped out and away from the ballet barre. The PRIVELEGE was ours to express our respect and courtesy TO LET the JOFFREY COMPANY DANCERS take the ballet barre. Though the ballet barre was crowded, the JOFFREY company dancers were certainly kind to acknowledge a place for us. Needless to say, the likes of Martine van Hamel and Rebecca Wright were a pleasure to see work. Van Hamel had feet of steel. Wright had a quadruple shank for her point shoes. When I had been a SUPER for one of Wright's lead in 'Petroushka,' (she was with A.B.T., then) her point shoe's shank cracked. She had no challenge to continue on her point. I had fun talking with her after her performance, while she was removing her makeup. Also, sometimes, when a ballet barre is crowded, and the ballet teacher tells one to take the piano, is an indication of a dancer's center strength that the piano is rarely touched, as a ballet barre. The teacher sees this in a dancer. Such a quiet honor. The pianist knows, too.

the barre etiquette when late is so important, because it first of all annoys the dancers themselves. we were warming up and i had my barre spot, this girl comes in 15 minutes late and goes and literally squeezes in next to me and this other girl who was her friend. i was so annoyed ?? we werent even able to dance and she still stayed there to be with her friend. eventually the teacher moved her away but the tendus were uncomfortable

On being late: "Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you... get stuck in traffic..." or you have to go over a bridge that has the ability to open for boats, and they leave the bridge open for a boat a LONG way away, so despite leaving early, you are stuck for TWENTY MINUTES waiting for this stupid boat to pass so they will close the bridge so that you can go through. Injuries: Tell your teacher. If it's planned (surgery/procedure), tell your teacher in advance. Attend class if it's possible (if your injury is not too severe) and at least watch. If you have a foot injury & can't wear pointe shoes or regular ballet slippers, do what you can in class in socks. Listen to your teacher if they have tips, e.g. stretches to help while you heal, if you're injured on one side make sure you work both sides evenly, etc. I had minor toe surgery two weeks ago. I could let my teacher know & tell her the recovery time is supposed to be 2 - 3 weeks. I went to class in socks, then transitioned to ballet slippers when I could, & hope to be back in pointe shoes this week. 🤞 Most studios allow/prefer that you bring water bottles into the classroom & have a space for them & drink breaks. Most studios don't mind torn tights because they can develop runs pretty easily & it might take time to replace them (tips: sew them, use clear nail polish). Also, if nothing is really going on, e.g. the teacher is switching the music or something, it's not polite to slouch... stand in first or fifth, stretch out a muscle, get a quick drink of water, but don't slouch or start chatting.

And onstage, for the love of Vaganova, stage left crosses in front of stage right AND if the conductor is playing you dance. Unless you cannot walk because something bad happened, you dance. That brings me to suggest you Ballet 🩰 Queens 👸🏻 do a video about onstage etiquette! Like if a dancer falls during Snow ❄️ (someone always falls during snow 😂), you grand jeté over her like she’s roadkill (I had to do that); if a flower falls and you’re onstage and have the ability to gracefully pick it up like it’s part of your role, you do it. You’re responsible for your own props and costumes - I once almost got into a fight because a fellow dancer stole my tiara 👑 because she had lost hers and knew she’d be in trouble! Backstage is a war zone where polite chaos Reigns (see what I did there 😂) so when the stage manager says “places, please!” It’s not a suggestion it’s an immediate order. And of course MERDE for all!🩰

I feel like parents of ballerinas need to watch this. I did ballet for fifteen years, now my own daughter is learning ballet. I can almost always tell which parents have never taken ballet (or any form of performing art) because they themselves break these etiquette “rules.” It amazes me how many times I myself have asked a parent to get their food and sweaty drink of the dance FLOOR!

Wow, I thought this was great! All of the little details you don't even think about that make up ballet class. I did want to name that along with courtesy and tradition and aesthetics, I think that some of the rules mentioned, like turning towards the barre, or tucking in your ribbons, have to do with safety and technique as well. For example, in regards to the barre turns, kids learn how to do a lot of exercises facing the barre as opposed to away. And also when learning turns or pointe work, the barre can provide an extra support and security level to prevent injuries. So I think that's part of why the tradition is to turn towards as well, to be safer and to more properly learn technique before going to the floor. And in terms of tucking in pointe shoe ribbons, again, part of the reason why that's the etiquette is that if the ribbons become too undone, a dancer could trip or fall or get injured. So even though it's absolutely about aesthetic too, the strictness of the rule also goes back to safety too. But this was a great and detailed video!

A couple more etiquette rules of thumb are first: to never ask for the time!! It may seem as if you are bored with the class or eager to leave! Second: try not to yawn at all! And if you do feel an uncontrollable yawn coming COVER YOUR MOUTH do not make it huge, loud, or noticable and maybe turn away a little. This is also just another way to respect your teacher and seem more engaged in class.❤

Hey @balletreign❤ I have to say this cause it literally made my day. Just went on your website and read the goal of ballet reign academy 🥺❤️✨ I gotta tell you that was one of the most amazing surprises I could get. First because the reason why I wanted to dance ballet was because I always thought of it as a dance that glorifies God, and because I also always wanted to build my industries on Christ. You just gave me a great push of encouragement and love. May your channel prosper as you have made my dreams prosper❤❤❤

I remember when I was about 14, in my inter ballet class. We were doing centre work, I got my period and was too scared and embarrassed to ask to go to the toilet to sort myself out so I just waited till the end of the class. I had to throw those tights away. Now I just tell my teacher I’m going toilet (don’t get periods anymore) and some of the girls eat in the studio if they’ve been there all day to give them some energy or they need a snack before class from a long day at school. I’m glad of how relaxed my school is

Times where I broke etiquette (this all happened within 1 week) 1. I was late once and I didn't know that I had to talk to the teacher, but i still chose a barre spot right next to the door and entered between combinations. 2. I turned away from the barre so many times (i was still learning) 3. I hit peoples hands so many times on the portable barres

THANK YOU for this wonderful list!! Now, if only the people who keep doing these transgressions would view your video 🤣🤣😂🤪 One thing I’d like to add, it seems obvious, but apparently it’s not - when you do left side, you also switch your hands so the person on the other side is still “behind” you OH OH OH!! And spacing going across the floor! Some people think it’s a race and will zoom by And geez Louise, if the group behind you is coming up on you, you’re not moving and need to get off the floor. So. Much. Traffic

A few weeks ago just before the first combination after the teacher explained everything I got a nosebleed and had to sprint out of class, I felt so bad bc I couldn't say anything and she was about to start the music so even if I wanted to I couldn't have...and when entering a few minutes later I didn't get the chance to say anything again, to this day I am asking myself if I did the right thing and what I could've done instead and if I entered at the right time (it was a new teacher since she took over the class over the easter holidays. I am also an adult beginner, just less than a year ago I started with ballet at age 22 so I don't know a lot of ballet etiquette). Thank you for the video it's super helpful!!🥰🥰

Absolutely. And if something like this happens, go to her after class. Offer your excuses and explain what has happened. Teachers are strict but still human. And she will certainly prefer you walking ot instead of bleading all over the dance floor.

Thank you for saying not to touch the piano. I’m not a pianist but most musicians are VERY protective of our instruments!! No touching unless you asked extremely politely and they agreed and you’re being instructed by the musician on how to handle the instrument. If it’s your piano in your house then by all means use it as a shelf, that’s your choice. Otherwise no.

A good start. I think you could do a 20 minute video on proper dress standards. Black leotards, and pink tights are usually a necessity in lower classes. My teacher how to see if I can wear them into college. Difference between ballet slippers and point shoes. How to size shoes.❤

A few suggestions * We do turn away from the barre at times if the exercise is done in reverse. * If the guy is carrying the barre by himself, he's already taken the care to balance the barre. Do not "help" him by lifting up one end of the barre because that transfers a lot more load onto one of his arms. You think you're helping but you're making it much worse for him.

One thing that I would add; make sure that you let the teacher know of any injuries before the start of class so that you can get guidance as to any steps that will need to be modified and they will know that you’re not just slacking off.

Oooh! Ballet is high maintenance! 😂 I would like to add something…please don’t smell!! The other day I was standing by someone at the barre and I was overcome by the smell!! I understand if you don’t want the aluminum type of deodorant, but the body odor was overpowering! I wanted to ask you ladies what you thought about if you start in the first group in center do you need to stay first group all the way through the class? Do you think it’s OK to drink water in class? I noticed some schools/companies don’t have any water! (Vaganova) A lot of people cut the line when we’re going diagonally across the floor. That always bothers me. If you start a center combination on the left side of the room (tendu) can you do adagio or jumps on the opposite (right) side? Thanks for the time and effort it took to make this video. It’s appreciated!

Much respect and props are due to pedagogues, coaches and pianists. I remember seeing a clip of the Mariinsky when they last visited Covent Garden. Before barre was over, one of the primas on the center barre packed up and left the studio. She cleared out of there as if Tchaikovsky's Coronation Marche was streaming through her head. She didn't acknowledge the teacher, her colleagues or the pianist before she left. She may have had a rehearsal, or personal emergency. She never came back. For whatever reason, she could have taken a moment, to acknowledge the teacher, given the fact that the class was being recorded for The Times. IMO that was disrepectful.

Is there a correct way to yawn? I was trying out an evening adult class at a studio near my daytime desk job, and had worked really hard all day just to be able to leave on time. But when I was in class, the room was completely closed up, with no fans, and of course no A/C. During the warmup, I couldn’t get enough oxygen. Even though I covered my mouth, the teacher saw it, and made me perform a grand plié in front of the class so she could correct me. I was so appalled that once the class was over I never went back. Was I really wrong? What should I have done?
@hannahriv5169
@hannahriv5169 5 ай бұрын
Usually, you should reallyyyy try to hold it in. But if you feel you need to yawn, politely turn away a littl and **cover your mouth!!** try to make it the least noticeable as possible. Also the reason it is bad etiquette to yawn is it makes you seem bored or disinterested in the class. Hope this helped!! ❤
