On Tuesday morning, 45,000 dock workers at 36 ports across the country are off the job and on strike, including here in Baltimore. Members of the International Longshoremen's Association or ILA started walking off the job after midnight Tuesday, demanding better pay and job security. This comes after stalled negotiations between the ILA and the United States Maritime Alliance, marking the first ILA strike since 1977. 11 News visited the picket line at Dundalk Marine Terminal to see what dock workers are demanding. It all comes down to more pay and less automation. Dock workers want a 77% raise over six years and a ban on automation on cranes, gates, and containers loading and unloading. Until they're satisfied with an agreement people across the country will feel the impacts. Longshoremen are responsible for moving containers off ships, sorting them and putting them on trucks or trains.
