I remember the swagger, the attitude of Miami in those days. During the national title game, I, as a kid, remember my Dad pacing and every time he saw the slightest example of chest-thumping from the Hurricanes saying, "Buncha thugs!" Hahaha. The hate was real.

Anybody who says Bama wasn't paying too much attention to CFB in the 80's - early 90's. The U were REALLY good, but that wasn't the issue. They were good *and they knew it*. They talked endless amounts of smack because they could back it up. They weren't good sports, didn't shake hands at the coin toss, were the sole reason excessive celebration penalties were enacted. But it goes way deeper than that. People hated them for being arrogant, yes, but they hated them more for the way they dressed (fatigues heading into the stadium), the celebrities who were always around (most notable Luther Campbell of 2 Live Crew), the corruption that was plain to see, etc. Throw in a heavy pour or classism and racism and they made the perfect villain for the Michigan, Alabama, Notre Dame, Nebraska blue bloods of CFB. They didn't care about the cherished traditions, or about trying to assimilate into the "well spoken, polite" persona people thought elite athletes should have. I was a freshman at Alabama and in the stands with the band for the 92 Sugar Bowl. We had people from all over telling us how glad they were somebody took those "thugs" down. We were told Alabama didn't stand a chance and would get drilled, so we were ecstatic to have beaten them soundly for a NC. Looking back now, there's a LOT of cringe about how people talked about Miami. The hate currently held for Alabama will go away as soon as we stop winning, which will happen. The hate is not focused on the backgrounds, character, or dress of the players on the team. I equate the current Bama dynasty to the USC dynasty from the early 2000's - we hated them because they always won, we reveled when Texas beat them, and promptly forgot about them when Pete Carrol left.

I agree. The hate that Alabama gets currently is purely jealousy because they win all the time. The hate for Miami in the 80's and 90's was more culturally motivated. Miami didn't care about tradition, didn't care about the blue bloods, didn't care about the national opinion. Growing up in south Florida in the 80's, we didn't care. That's the way we play. We talk trash, we celebrate, we make opponents mad. I never understood the hatred until I got older and saw the bigger picture.

One major difference is that Miami didn’t get rewarded to make championships based on their brand name more than their talent….. In fact Miami got screwed out of national championships during the dynasty whereas the same has NEVER happened for Alabama

During the '92 national championship game between bama and the canes, I was sitting in the dome in new Orleans next to my "then" brother in law, a huge auburn fan. He lost his voice before half time. But we could not hear each other anyway. That is the loudest game I have ever attended.

That game was awesome. I was 20 years old and at my first title game. I have attended many more since then but that one is my all time favorite. Do you remember taunting Gino Toretta with the "Gino" chants? Good times!!!

Unfortunately it’s a classic case of living too long to see yourself turn into a villain. It’s kinda also happening to Clemson, when everybody loved Dabo and Clemson for beating bama, but once they beat other major teams, people get upset and turn you into a villain over everything. Although I must say, personally it’s come to the stage were it’s impossible to dislike bama anymore. It is the pinnacle of college football!

That’s really the biggest sign. When we played LSU, Clemson, and Bama, those fans hated us as if we’ve been going back and forth for years. It was the strangest thing. You're right Josh... They're just too young to remember how despised The U really was! I'm 57 and remember the whole run. Even here in Arkansas where one of our favorite sons was the head coach...folks hated them with a purple passion. We didn't hate Jimmy but we hated them Canes'. For a little context; we were mad at Frank Broyles for passing on Jimmy Johnson as head coach FOR THE SECOND TIME!! Jimmy wanted the job and Frank hired Lou Holtz instead ( it worked out pretty well ), but in 83 when Lou was sent packing for endorsing senator Jesse Helms of North Caralina ( an absolutely fool thing to do for a college coach, a recruiting disaster! ), then Jimmy wanted the job again!! Then Frank hired Ol slow boring wishbone coach Ken Hatfield and then it got out that Frank gave Jimmy a "Token Interview" ie: He had already decided to hire Ken and just gave Jimmy a meaningless interview to not hurt Jimmy's feelings! I don't know how it got out...but it did, and Jimmy was understandably angry and insulted and so were a lot of Arkansas fans. ESPECIALLY when Jimmy started beating the brakes off everybody!! Jimmy got his revenge in 87 when his Hurricanes came into Little Rock and gave us the worse beating of my lifetime! We'll I love your channel and hope this wasn't too long. God Bless

I grew-up and played high school football in Miami-Dade county in the time-period just before the UM's rise to greatness. I've got to agree 100%! Miami at its peak was probably the most hated team in the history of college football, and it wasn't because of its successes on the field, it was because of why they were successful, and because of their off-field antics. They were the first major college to heavily recruit talent from the inner-city ghettos of urban South Florida, and from the rural ghettos in the agricultural areas around Lake Okeechobee. Before the "U" came calling these players' best option was going to one of the successful HSBC's programs like FAMU, Bethune-Cookman, Southern U, or Grambling. This was because most of the major colleges' "acceptance standards" were too high for their admission. MIami, under Howard Schnellenberger was the first school to admit these student athletes and provide them with the remedial classes they required to succeed in school, which greatly upset the powers that be within the college football establishment. This was to the point where Miami was being constantly accused of cheating and always under a cloud of potential NCAA sanctions. Additionally, there was the off-field incidents, like players being caught in night clubs, speeding in fast cars sometimes with weapons, or wearing camouflage to the National Championship, or on-field controversies like running up the score against helpless opponents in major Bowl games or show-boating after making a great tackle or scoring.

Miami is definitely the most hated of its era for other reasons than success. Alabama is hated just because nobody can beat Bama consistently. Bottom line is you cant compare the two.. Alabama's dominance now destroys Miami's. Alabama is hated because of the blueprint Saban has created and nobody else can come close to duplicating it. @@adamsanders2270 There were certainly other factors that went into it and you are right other teams took the crown after Alabama beat them that year and were already on the rise before Bama beat them but Miami hadn't lost a game in almost 2 years before Bama beat them in that game and then they never bounced back after that until 2001 of course. If Bama doesn't beat them then they go on to become the only team with 2 undefeated seasons in a row.

The reason I have hated Miami for decades was not their records, victories nor Coaches... it was the "Thus"! There was no class. There was no character. There was no sportsmanship. I would never allow my child to play for any program that had the core lack of values that Miami had. Saban at the very least believes in Sportsmanship, Good Attitude, Team not Individual play, Doing the Right Things to get What you want, etc. The polls only reflect the lack of experiencing Miami's lack of character. I grew up watching both teams' Dynasties... and I agree 100% with you! One dynasty is well known and the other is a memory. Memories fade and jealously is strong in the present. All this tells me is that many of the people answering the poll weren't alive in the mid-80s through mid-90s and also that immediacy bias is a real thing. A lot of people under 35 only remember Miami from a few of the 30 for 30 shows which certainly romanticized the Hurricanes from that era, they were nationally hated (yes, hated) by a strong majority not just for their massive success, Nouveau riche status, but also for their real and perceived culture at the time (which was sometimes exaggerated and sometimes not, and was certainly used to often reflect negatively on the entire team). Some of it was likely unfair, and some of it was totally justified (Remember the combat fatigues prior to playing Penn State) -- Good Vs. Evil, Catholics Vs. Convicts, Traditional Bama/ND/Texas/Penn State Vs Loud/Obnoxious Miami -- these were all very real storylines. There wasn't much of the grudging respect that Alabama/Saban often gets today.

I was only around for the very end of Miami, but I 100% agree with you. Miami was viewed as thugs and criminals, the constant NCAA investigations didn't help that image at all. Alabama is hated for just the reason you said, they always win. I do think it made people worried for a moment there when it looked like ever NC will only ever be Bama or Clemson, but luckily Clemson has taken a step back. I’m born and raised in Miami and went to the University of Miami. Sadly, it’s still Miami by a wide margin. I think a lot of programs are still butt hurt of the whoopings we gave them 20 years ago. We’re not where we once were but I truly believe we’ll get there soon. People still fear the idea/prospect of Miami being great again because the talent is there in our backyard . Sadly, our athletic department and bad coaching hires since Coker ruined a lot of relationships locally. Mario will get us there . As for Bama, I think people hate them because this run has gone on for more at least 12 years whereas Miami’s incredible run lasted for about 9 years in 80s to early 90s and then briefly in early 2000s. As a guy in his 40s I can back you up, the 1988 Miami vs Notre Dame game wasn't called Catholics vs Convicts for nothing. I hated Miami, so many of us hated Miami, when Penn St beat Miami in 87 so many people were happy, including a lot of the press. I hated the Cowboys even more because they hired Jimmie Johnson. To me people seem more tired of Alabama winning than hate them.

See the difference is the fact Miami was a disrespectful group of players that didn't care about giving you respect, no love, and no give a 💩's. They would talk smack to the opposing teams during warm-ups and wouldn't be warming up themselves, but they were good! And even though Miami was smug like that, no one could stop em to force that humility to sink in. But like Josh Pate State said about the 1993 Sugar Bowl against Bama. Bama humbled their butts. Bama made them so humble that it took almost another decade for them to get back to playing for a title. Alabama, theoretically you could say has been a dynasty since 1925. I mean no other program has done what this program has done. I don't care if it's Notre Dame, I don't care if it's Michigan, USC, Nebraska, Ohio St, Penn St, Texas, Florida St, or whomever. Alabama has been the more consistent team over this 97 year run. Before Saban is done at Bama, he will have the program #1 in overall wins (#1 Michigan 976 wins, Bama and Ohio St tied #2 with 942 wins) and will be very close to most draft picks, 1st round draft picks, and All Americans. And maybe Heisman trophy winners. Already has the most national titles, even if you take away 3 or 4 of em. They are so far ahead in Bowl appearances and Bowl wins that I don't think no one will ever catch em. But the real difference is the fact that Alabama was called dumb illiterate white boys during the early 20's, until they beat a Washington team in the Rose Bowl to win their 1st national title. That was a win for the entire southern US. On the train ride from Pasadena to Mobile. People in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi turned up all along that train route with banners, kids screaming, people celebrating that win. The south was respected from that point on. Look at 1934, Frank Thomas a Notre Dame grad, teammate of the Gipper , and Rockne player. Took a real good team with some great players , and one particular player that would eventually became one of the best ever. Bear Bryant, and Alabama even helped change the way the south, not just Alabama, but the south as a whole, think about segregation, and the need to let the African Americans play the game without the hate, thanks to USC and Sam Cunningham in Birmingham on a September night in 1970. See , Alabama is hated , but they're hated because they are Bama. Bama has class and respect, then gives that respect back to their opponents. So that is the difference between these two programs dynasties. And we all can see who is still dominating, and it dosnet look like it's ever going to end lol.

Does anybody remember the 86 game vs. no1 oklahoma in the Orange Bowl? The hurricane team captains walked to the middle of the field for the coin toss and were absolutely abusing the sooner team captains! Its on KZbin. Brian Bosworth and fellow captains were just standing there and saying nothing while the canes players were talking to them like dogs! It was all caught on national TV. It was stuff like that that caused so much hate but the canes and there coaches didn't care. Classic college football moment!

Penn State's win over Miami in the 1987 Fiesta Bowl set me on the path to becoming a Penn State alumnus. I started hating them during their game against Oklahoma earlier that season. Miami’s dynasty was completely built around intimidation and humiliating their opponents. When the NCAA finally passed the taunting and excessive celebration rules, Miami died. The importance of the1992 NCG can’t be overstated. Alabama completely flipped the script on them and it was a beautiful thing to watch. I will never forget the mugging of Lamar Thomas in that game.

I agree, these programs are hated for different reasons. I can vaguely remember the tail end of the Miami dynasty, but I remember the hate that people had for the team and players. It was unreal. The reason Alabama is so hated, in my opinion, is the VERY vocal minority of fans that Won’t. Shut. Up. At least that’s why I dislike them. I watch any CFB video online and the comment section is full of “Bama” fans even when the topic at hand has nothing to do with Alabama. In short, Miami was hated because of cultural reasons, Alabama is hated because the fans have become entitled and insufferable.
