Daydreaming, About Us, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, Wonderland, Awkward, Start Over, Mirage, At the Drop of a Hat and Smile -- an unbelievable range of mid-tempo songs from the greatest hard rock band on the planet - Band-Maid. "Daydreaming," "YOLO," "Puzzle,” and a host of others are world-class masterpieces. Although I love Daydreaming just the way it is and believe it may be Band-Maid's best composed and overall accessible song, I've always wonder if it was sung in English, how deep in the international market Daydreaming would have traveled...? Oh well, I'll stop daydreaming now. Thx MilTruc, for another great Band-Maid reaction!

Perhaps, but even if people don't understand the lyrics there will always be those who like it just for the sound. For example Rammstein. Nobody knows what they're saying unless they understand German, but English lyrics have always been readily available. Maybe that's what they need! They need an official English lyrics link on their site!

Ah Anemone, it is my favourite song and maybe it's because I'm an old softy at heart. The four things that particularly hit me are 1. the lyrics are beautiful 2. Saiki's vocals are perfect 3. the drumming is sublime and finally 4. when Saiki sings 'the night is over' and then Kanami's guitar wails. ( I went all monty python for a bit, the two things- the three things - the four things, if you know life of brian you will understand) About Us and Daydreaming are only a smidgeon behind.

About Us was written as a thank you to the fans during Covid. With that in mind and Saiki's (the singer) little speech during the concert before singing the song. It is hard not to pretend to have a cold every time I listen to it. I have listened many times. Miku's (red rose) backing in Daydreaming gives the emotional heart to the song for me and Anemone is just a great song. But then I wish I could pretend not to love the heavier sound and the lighter sound equally. Kanami is the lead guitarist and music writer and arranges with the rest of the band. Miku writes most of the lyrics. But without any one piece of the jigsaw, the picture just wouldn't be complete.

Translation of the speech that Saiki did before playing "About us" in their last Okyu-Ji (all credits goes to t-Shinji on Reddit/r/BandMaid and big thanks to him, or her, for this awesome work - You can watch the concert and enjoy the translation): Saiki: We were supposed to meet you today. For the first time in a year, we thought we could meet you all, those of you who could come to see us, but we can’t meet you in the end. I’m sorry. Even though it’s not my fault. We have been having days of turmoil for about a year. In the beginning, we were very surprised because we hadn’t experienced it before, and we had no experience of not being able to meet others in person. We were sad, but we found we shouldn’t be sad in this situation. When I saw you masters and princesses on social media, you were more depressed than us, and we thought that’s too bad. We Band-Maid have been thinking about how to cheer up all of you in the last one year. We truly wanted to meet you at Nippon Budokan, but it’s impossible because of COVID, so let’s wait for the day when we can meet. And in the last one year… or in the COVID pandemic, we have become more eager to cheer you up, and we Band-Maid realized again it’s important to give our songs to you. That’s why we wrote this song for Budokan. We made the album also in the pandemic, so it might have a little similar feel, but this song is planned for Nippon Budokan, and we really want to give it to you masters and princesses now. Budokan is not our goal but just a stepping stone. We will perform at bigger venues, and we promise we will bring you there and give you even better songs, so let’s keep it up a little more. This is our present for you masters and princesses. Please listen to it.

There's a resistance to pop music, ballads, or love songs because nobody's heard them done well.* There's nothing wrong with them, they're just not done well, usually. Band-Maid does these types of songs really well. They are artists of the highest order. They aren't "rock" or "metal" or anything, really ... those are just the weapons they've chosen. They are artists through and through. They all deserve recognition. So you know MISA's name - The composer and lead guitarist goes by the stage name Kanami Tōno (遠乃 歌波), where 歌 is "song" and 波 is "wave". She is a special person in this world. * There's also testosterone poisoning - the male fear that someone might suspect they are actually human and not macho enough. Most guys grow out of that eventually. After they have little boys they start to see the humor in it. For anyone offended by the term "testosterone poisoning" I say: "Come at me, bro!"

Well, a little bit of where I'm kind of coming from is whenever I first started doing all female Japanese band reactions I even stopped the video at one point and said that I had a stigma against all female bands. I was listening to LOVEBITES, but as the song went on I got more and more into it and ended the video on a high note! I was called a male chauvinist in the comments section, and other similar comments. There is a live version of Anemone with just Saiki and Kanami performing it but it's on that chinese site. About Us is, for me, their most emotional song, mostly because it came out in the middle of the pandemic and I had been cut off from family and friends for months. It made me cry as soon as I heard it - real fuckin' hard too - but it was a big release of pent up sadness (I lost 3 friends the 1st year) and a big relief too. I've loved Band-Maid since 2017 but I loved them even more when I heard what Saiki said before they performed it here - “We were supposed to meet you today. For the first time in a year, we thought we could meet you all, those of you who could come to see us, but we can’t meet you in the end. I’m sorry. Even though it’s not my fault. Anemone- Another song with fantastic moving and emotional lyrics from Miku, with a suitably moving guitar solo from Kanami. Just beautiful. The picking you refer to is called either trem/tremolo picking or alternate picking. There is a live acoustic version version of Anemone from their performance at Zepp Tokyo in 2018, in that the emotional gut punch of Saiki's vocals and Kanami's backing vocal can bring tears to your eyes. There is also a version of it from their alter-ego band, Band-Maiko, "Akasimahen", with traditional Japanese instruments and the lyrics reworked into the Kyoto-ben dialect, from the Kansai-ben Dialect. And from my understanding this song is about the love for a friend/lover who has possibly died or moved far-far away. I still haven't quite figured that out and Google Translate isn't the best for trying to figure out context. There is also a fan made music video for it that is very emotionally poignant as well. I posted the speech that Saiki gave before they performed this song under Russel Potter's comment, so I won't report it here. But it is a love song to the fans telling us, that they missed performing in front of us and they hope to be able to meet us all soon, and to take hope. And About Us and Endless Story are rumored to be two of the hardest songs emotionally for the Ladies to sing. And there are two different, I guess explanations, or interpretations, for Daydreaming. One is that it's a woman who has met an old lover on the street and even though they have broken up still has a dream of them being together. The second is that the woman has seen an old lover, and they met and got together, but the song is the woman after they have been intimate and the lover has left, where she dreams they were back in bed together. I got the first explanation from a Japanese gentleman who is my age (Mid 50's), the second from a Japanese gentleman who is still in his 20's. I prefer the first interpretation myself. And here they are again. Band Maid Is; (In order of joining band) Name/Age: Nickname: Position: Miku Kobato Small Pigeon/ Band Founder, Secondary Lead Vocalist, Rhythm Guitarist, Main Lyricist, Age: 31 Koba/Kuruppo/ Backing Vocals, Backing Tracks, Arrangements 10/21/91 Cluppo Kanami Tono Princess/ Lead Guitarist, Primary Composer, Backing Vocals, Keyboards, Backing Tracks Age: 31 Kanamincho/ Backing Vocals on Backing Tracks, Arrangements 9/28/91 Mincho Akane Hirose Gorilla/ Drums, Percussion, Backing Vocals on Backing Tracks, Backing Tracks, Age: 32 Ah-Chan Arrangements 12/14/90 MISA Barefoot Assassin/ 5 String Bass Guitar, Backing Vocals on Backing Tracks, Backing Tracks Age: 30 MISA-MISA-MISA Arrangements 10/15/92 Saiki Atsumi Ice Queen/ Primary Lead Vocalist, Backing Vocals, Lyricist, Backing Vocals on Backing Age: 28 Sai-Chan/ Tracks, Backing tracks, Arrangements 2/8/94 Sensei (Teacher)

You picked three of Band-Maid's most emotional songs. 'Anemone' has that liquid rhythm like that of a sea anemone puffing and gliding in the ocean while Miku Kobato's lyrics outline the conflicting thoughts racing through a woman's mind while within her lover's embrace. The song isn't an "Oh baby, we're for-ever!" love song, but more of a "Whoa! Right now this feels good, but where is this really going?" kind of love song that reflects reality. 'About Us' was written to be performed at Band-Maid's first concert at Nippon Budokan, a major achievement that told them that all their hard work had finally paid off. They were devastated when the concert was cancelled due to continuation of the lockdown. Instead, they rented an alternate venue and performed the planned concert online in an empty auditorium. The performance of 'About Us' was prefaced by a short speech by Saiki explaining the nature of the song: that they wrote it to encourage their fans and let them know that they would all be able to meet again someday. It's very emotional. 'Daydreaming' was a ballad that Kanami wrote at Saiki's request. Miku and Saiki collaborated on the Lyrics. Miku uses English/Japanese homonyms and slurring of words to heartbreaking effect in the lyrics and Kanami's solo that starts with a double pick slide is devastating. The majority of Band-Maid's songs are hard rockers and they're great. But I must warn you: when they go soft and slow they open doors to places you did not realize they could go. Their Christmas online acoustic concert was a doctoral thesis on how to deconstruct a rock song into an "Unplugged" acoustic arrangement. Two more songs that dovetail into this topic: "Smile" and "Page". Also, Miku Kabato has recently taken on the alter-ego of Cluppo, and is doing pop songs. Her composer/arranger is named Crow and her recording engineer is named Crow #2 and her mixer is named Crow #3. These 'Cluppo' pop songs are nothing like like Band-Maid songs except that no two sound alike, they're all produced at a very high level, feature that every changing progression of a Band-Maid song, and they all have those sad but upbeat Miku Kobato 'inner thoughts' lyrics. I suspect the "Crows" are Kanami, Misa, and Akane.
