Wanna know the Band-Maid formula? It's honestly kinda wild how simple it is once it clicked for me. It's a pop-punk framework; 2-3 verses to highlight lyrics/vocals, upbeat catchy chorus, short punchy solo if it's there. Thing is, where most pop-punk bands will just reinforce the framework, Band-Maid fills it completely. Dope riff-heavy intro> verse 1 splits into 2 distinct parts> ascending/descending pre-chorus> upbeat catchy chorus ALSO broken into 2 distinct parts> dope intro riff returns> verse 2 - same, but different> pre-chorus gets a small change> chorus parts get small changes> someone shreds our faces off> bridge is a huge drop for the band so Saiki can belt it> chorus parts again> Dope intro riff now dope outro riff. 80% of their songs follow the same pattern. Thing is, the pattern's absolute 🔥🔥🔥 and they always keep it fresh and different, so I ain't mad.

On the recordings, Kanami plays the keyboards and all of the guitar parts on some songs (e.g., Miku's parts on Different are played by Kanami on the recording). She then trains Miku to play the parts. They discussed that in a recent interview. Obviously, when live, the keyboards are on a backing track. Thus, for those songs, they play to a click track.

In that interview they also told that the sole purpose of their instrumental 'dont be long' (awesome bside to 'different' and also on spotify btw 😉) was to train miku to play those fast and complex chords that she has to do to deliver her part on 'different' when played/performed live. Kanami is such an awesome sensei to kobato. 🖤✌️🕊️

Having seen so many rock bands crater over the years, the warmth and closeness of them considering aside from MISA and Akane they were pretty much strangers. Early Miku stepped back and let MISA and Akane audition Saiki and rehearse with her. Showed up the day before their 1st gig with Saiki to meet her and give her, her maid outfit. Saiki stayed, even thought she has said in interviews they tricked her. I'm soooo glad they did!!

I really liked this song the first time I heard it and then it just continued to grow on me. I love Kanami’s solos and was expecting your typical solo, but to her credit she knew a solo would have been really good but not really added to the song and if a solo doesn’t add anything to the song then what’s the point? So instead of playing one of her typical brief buy shredding solos, she composes the “anti-shred-solo” instead and the song is distinct and much better for it. Every time I hear it I love it more and more and it elevates the last of the song.

Kanami sequenced the keyboard parts. She started out on piano then picked up guitar some years later. So, Alan, you're saying that their "formula" is the use of dynamics, and not having a static mix? Mate, that's just songwriting 101. Take your listener on a journey! Have your instruments pop in and out periodically throughout the song. That's how you get the goosebumps out of your audience it also adds an element of the unexpected in a way that doesn't completely change the character of the song, or seem too jarring with a random left turn. This approach to songwriting is something that a lot of bands could learn from these ladies!

you got it. they start with heavy minor chords, then switch to an upbeat/anthemic melody come chorus, tweak the verse riffs the second time around just to make it a bit fresh to the ears, use a dropped bridge that builds up to an almost all-out final chorus, and cap it with a hard ending to keep the listener hanging and feel like wanting again and some more. the structure has served them well, and it will continue to do so because their level of musicianship elicits paying close attention and makes it a working formula. as mincho succinctly puts it, there needs to be an emotional response.

Akane stole the song from the beginning. I've never heard her play anything like this before (or at least I've never noticed it). Kanami centers the base of the song so perfectly where the rest of the members have room to shine on anyone they wish (though it feels like a democracy on who's going to shine or share the spotlight withing each song). Each song as beautiful as the women playing them. I heard the drums on this track and wanted to see what other people thought about it, but apparently no drummers have reacted to this song sadly enough. Glad you guys covered it.
