As noted already, this was known as “Saiki’s Pee Break” for a long time. As they wrote more songs together, their set list grew and grew, and now they needed to give Saiki’s voice a rest (the band gets a break during “Miku’s Magic Time”). So they added an instrumental to the set list. “Play” was originally an instrumental, being based on a riff Kanami improv’d during band practice. But after developing it out as a full song, Miku wrote (simple) lyrics for it, making it one of their biggest crowd participation/amp up songs. So Kanami went back to the drawing board to write a more technical instrumental, where the guitar melody was explicitly “vocal” in tone, so there would be no need for vocals to complete the song. And that became Onset

Akane is such a genius of drums minimalism, practically no drum hit without the justification, but almost always very sophisticted one, that it took her friends from the band about 6 years to persuade her to a longer solo :)
@stevehall51284 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing: Yeah we all wish this drum solo was longer. BUT even the one in "Wonderland" could've been longer than it is; a lot of drummers would have extended it with different sections: quieter, different beat, different techniques. Akane-san kept it fairly short and all of one piece because a longer, multi-section solo would have disrupted the flow of *the song as a whole* which everything they do is in service of.

The rest of the band have said Kanami often becomes unusually aggressive during performances. Akane complained that she once did an axe kick to one of her cymbals, and regularly targets her kit. When you see how she is off stage, it's hard to imagine.

Kanami's moment is indeed throughout the whole song. She is laying out the dinner table, the room, the walls and roof of this instrumental. For a longer solo, check "Freedom".

Band maid are just toooo sweet and i Love them and especially Saiki shes so amazing
@sceif4 жыл бұрын
Like others have mentioned this is played mid-performance to give Saiki's vocal cords a rest. Maidiacs affectionately subtitle Onset as "Saiki's pee break". The fact you can totally fill in vocals is a great reason why this works as a great instrumental. The chorus especially plays like its own vocals and that's something very few bands can pull off.

You guys really should react to the "Time & Rock in Me" a live video of Miku singing solo while Saiki takes a break. It's the closest to what Miku had in mind when founded Band-Maid.
@laughingbuddha29484 жыл бұрын

@@laughingbuddha2948 Not sure you can say lucky, Saiki has said they tricked her into joining the band.
@tombworld90124 жыл бұрын
The fact that they have Saiki is what allows Miku to branch out into those kinds of songs to differentiate them from those with the full lineup. If Saiki wasn't there, Miku would have her hands full trying to do what Saiki does, not 'every song would be like Time/Rock in Me.' And she wouldn't do it as well as Saiki does, and we probably never would've heard about Band-Maid because the formula would be off. Miku is quoted as saying that her voice wasn't right for the music she wanted the band to play, not "I wanted to play bubblegum pop but oh well we have a different singer."
@yugoxgc4 жыл бұрын
Idk what makes you think "Rock in Me" sound would be what Miku thought for the Band when She choose Saiki for vocals better fitting the band
@outwest10144 жыл бұрын
@@yugoxgc First Miku wanted a Rock music band from the get go. The need for someone with a stronger voice was by all of them. Now, Saiki was recommended by their agency, who told them that Saiki would likely have a problem with Miku (personality) and the Maid outfits. So Kanami, Akane, and MISA conducted the audition and worked with Saiki for some time. Saiki did not meet Miku or find out about the Maid outfit until the day before their the first gig with Siaki. Miku of course approved of Saiki, but Kanami, Akane, and MISA choose Saiki from her audition. Most important Saiki did not walkout. Now Miku and Saiki have a relationship, that at times can be amusing, warm and icy all at the same time.

YO! Thanks for another BAND-MAID reaction! Akane didnt get a big solo but she was beating the hell out of those drums the whole song! And yes, Miku played absolutely flawlessly this whole song. Miku had a small solo. Their shows can be pretty long. You can easily get a 24 set list of songs depending on the show. Saiki usually takes a break in the middle and they will perform 2 songs where Miku is leading vocals.

This was recorded just at the point where Miku was coming into her own as a guitarist. I agree that the part where she's playing by herself isn't really a 'solo' because even though she's the only one playing for two bars it's just the beginning of a repeated musical phrase where the rest come in later and build on it. But still, it's a lot of credit to her for that time to be able to be featured and not just hang out in the background. And we all know she didn't stop there and now can duel with MISA like a pro. I have no doubt she'll continue to grow and we'll get a true shred solo out of her to rival one of Kanami's sometime in the future.
@brettmarlar41544 жыл бұрын
Luminlay side dots help on dark stages too. Akane exerts more than the other four combined on every song, so I'm sure she was saving herself for a bigger moment later in the show. (Which are typically 2 hours long.) This son also serves as an opportunity for Saiki to use the bathroom and rehydrate.

During one of their long interviews Akane makes an offhand mention of doing a certain technique when the drums are featured in a song. Saiki says “Are you now ready to say that?” And Akane demurs a bit. So it seems Akane may be a bit shy about the “drum solo” thing.

Not clear which one. back to Miku. I focused oh her rhythm on listening again. Unpopular opinion time. I agree this sounds like an unfinished track waiting for lyrics - I hope they finish it. I also agree that it needs more if it is to stay as an instrumental - at least the track as opportunities for some extended jams in the future. I'm also mildly annoyed by the inclusion of a second rhythm guitar track. I'm not a musician, so I can't rule out the possibility that it some kind of pitch shift effect, but it sounds like a backing track and that kinda defeats the point of a live instrumental, IMO. I'd prefer it it wasn't there. Minor gripes aside, it's yet another solid BAND-MAID track. Thanks for the comments on lighting too. I'd always wondered if it was every a problem for performers - it's not something that gets talked about much. I remember getting death glares from Rose Tattoo's guitarist for using a flash at close range when photographing them in a poorly lit venue - guess he didn't appreciate being blinded.
