The thing that is annoying about the sound quality is that isn't a broadcast. It was recorded for br/dvd release and have gone though all the usual post-production including mastering. There isn't really any technical reasons for the mix so it has to be a creative choice.
@armynurseboy
@armynurseboy 3 жыл бұрын
@@nomusician4737 I think there was a creative choice made. They decided to record from area microphones vs pulling the sound directly from the mixing board. Previous DVD releases the sound was pulled from the mixing board and it was crisp and clean (great example is the Zepp Tokyo show). This one sounds more "live" but it does come with the price that some of the instruments sound a bit washed out.
@nomusician4737
@nomusician4737 3 жыл бұрын
@@armynurseboy When you record a BR/DVD you always do both. There is no need at all to pic one over the other, it is literary 10-20 more minutes work to record every single channel unmixed and without any live effects. All those things you correct in the post-process. The "area" mics are used to get the audience sound and to record the "live ambiance". You can hear they've clearly done that at a few songs where the audience sing-a-long is pretty high in the mix all but the one chorus when it is a lot more quiet. That is also a production decision/mistake that is mind boggling to me. The myth that live br/dvd are somehow mixed at the venue or even taken directly from the board is just that. A myth. No professional engineer or producer would work like that.
@TheBunkhouseStudios
@TheBunkhouseStudios 3 жыл бұрын
@@nomusician4737 so it's definitely not just ambient stage mics - it would not sound anything like this. There are crowd mics placed on stage to record the audience. The way it would work is that a split of all the channels would be multitrack recorded, pre going in to the live mixing board for the PA sound. This audio then would be taken to a studio to be professionally mixed. This is often what happens for a live concert recording release. For live broadcasts it's typically just a split of the LR signal off the mixing board and is the same audio being sent to the PA. You'd be surprised how much this is the case.

@@TheBunkhouseStudios I think you wrote that to the wrong username. That is virtually the exact same thing I wrote, even tho I simplified it. I used to work FOH and as a musician. I have done literary 100's of recorded shows, both for broadcasts and for post-production as an engineer and as a musician. It seems like a LOT of music fans think a live recording is literary the same mix and sound as it was live without post. Try to explain that pitch correction, timing issues and so on is industry standard and used by their favourite band. You'll face the wrath of the comment section... To be fair though, the whole put up a mic on stage and record might be true for a punk band infront of 100 people in a basement...

Kanami does constant background lead and I don't think it is intended to be dominant. Do you really think Kanami would allow it to be background if she intended it to be up in the mix??????

In this song in particular, the mix is Ok. But if you compare the same song with Zepp Tokyo, the guitar sound is higher in the mix on the latter. "Play" has pretty decent sound in Line Cube Shibuya but other songs are so frustrating ("Rinne", "Blooming") and you can barely hear the lead guitar

I pretty much completely agree with you. Regarding the differences between adjusting the sound for the venue vs recording, I feel festival recordings are especially "cruel" to musicians. Which of course is understandable.
@TheBunkhouseStudios
@TheBunkhouseStudios 3 жыл бұрын
festivals are tough! on the one hand you don't have to fight against room acoustics when you're outside, but also because of that the sound energy disperses quicker and weather conditions like wind particularly can really mess with the sound. Add to that often hectic changeovers between bands with no proper soundcheck, that can be stressful. They can be great fun though still! For live recordings at festivals because they are normally broadcast live they just take a split signal from the PA sound desk, so the mix often isn't optimal as it's not mixed specifically for broadcast.

Awesome feedback on this. I only discovered this band in 2020 after this gig. As a former TD I was surprised by the amount of negative feedback on the mix. However I have now seen their earlier official recordings at Studio Cost and Zepp, and the mix does seem "sharper" and maybe why ppl think this one is flawed. I think your' dead on though and I dont know the details of these locations, but line cube does look a lot bigger. You can tell by hearing the audioence so much they had a spray and flay mic over the room I think they mixed in. OH! Nice catch on the Sennheiser. I "guessed" the same, but Im not an A1 background and trust your call on that is right. I cant believe the 58's are STILL the go-to standards haha.

Welcome aboard, Mark. You are embarking on (along with many others - 100 million YT views!) an awesome hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid: BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Consistency (over a 100 songs with their latest album, “Unseen World”), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destine for mega-stardom. Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off the rails spectacular. Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 50 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5XWaJppgpJnorM Their later songs on Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, and Just Bring It drive even more - Manners, Different, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Glory, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on. But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, About Us, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts! And many are represented with over 35 well produced music videos. kzbin.info Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE concerts such as Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA on February 14th (“Domination” kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5PcgnaAo5ulj8k), ZEPP 2018, Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 and some of the better 2019 tour Fan vids. Here’s three of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at super intimate venues. The first taken by Vladimir Chupin in Hamburg: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZCUpZttmNmag9E, the second taken by JT Dayo in LA: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqasinWhdt6Veas, and third, JOSER8845 in LA: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6S6i6mifKx3idU. If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid. For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009 Band-Maid members are: (Ages are best est.). Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements, melodies and High Priestess mediator between the Gods (Band Members) and the masters and princesses (Fans). At 27 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Leader) as Miku calls her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away the persona. Her charisma, performance and voice focus the experience. Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 29 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kurrupo! No, no, no… KURRUPO!! Kanami Tono (Ka-Naw-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 29 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more! Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 30 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumRilla” is the Party! MISA (Me-Sa) "Assassin" - Bass, 28 years old. A sullen, barefoot, dark spirit driving her 5-string bottom-end to hell and back, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. The Mysterious One literally kills it… every note.. uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA! A lot of people comment on the sound on this live music video and another Domination that they pulled from this live DVD. It's interesting seeing it from the view of a sound engineer. I saw a comment where someone thought the mixing issue came from the fact they were trying to capture the audience response better during the song and therefore it messed with the mixing of the instruments. Of course I'm not someone who would know enough about sound to know if that would effect it and I don't know if that person had any clue either, but I thought it was an interesting theory.
@TheBunkhouseStudios
@TheBunkhouseStudios 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think that would have an impact no, as there would have been extra mics set up on stage to capture the sound of the crowd. At the same time any mic on stage is going to capture bleed from other sources and this can cause stuff like phasing, which is the timing difference between sound sources, that can create EQ imbalances. Which can mean if there is too much bleed on one microphone you can't turn it up in the mix too much without effecting the tonal balance of the rest of the mix.

A lot of church live broadcasts and club bands making their own video's have the very same issue you brought up - they simply use an output from their main desk and with no stage volume to compliment the mix, "you get what you get" - usually guitars much lower than heard in the venue in real time.

Mixing rhythm guitar way back the way it's done here (and generally in Band-Maid songs) is something I really like and used by some of the best players/bands/producers - check out John McGeoch's playing on _The Light Pours Out Of Me_ on the album Secondhand Daylight (under the single-string lead riff), very similar and IMO very atmospheric.

All I know is the lead guitar, in particular, seems low in the mix for this whole show when everyone is playing. When she's soloing, you can hear her. When everything else is going on her lead parts are quite buried.

I love learning new stuff. That was very informative. When I was reading the complaints about the guitar mix I had a suspicion that it had something to do with the acoustics of the hall. I used to go to many gigs at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester back in the day. That hall had been designed for the Hallé symphony orchestra and proved to be less than ideal for rock bands. (It wasn't great for orchestras either to be honest, but that's another story!) Thanks for your informed reaction.

Also, I checked out your videos list and found some interesting topics you've covered. Will be checking them out.

How much of a difference does the microphone placement at the amps and types of microphones make? Would the recording be done from those microphones or from the PA system itself? SAIKI is the singer and yes she uses Sennheiser microphones and DPA Microphones. MISA the bass player picks and slaps in the same songs. She uses both methods where it's needed. Very good bass player!

Studio monitors are really just speakers tuned to have as flat a response as possible. I'd say yep, there is an acclimation period to them as most people are used to listening to music through speakers that are more 'hyped' or 'coloured' in their sound.

Thanks for adding the insights of a pro-helps add dimension to this fan's appreciation of this Band, my favorite! Look forward to listening to more of your breakdowns! I'd love your or other fans' views on the guitar levels: This concert has a # of examples of Kanami's lead guitar feeling too low in the mix (maybe rhythm Miku's too). The Blu-Ray this is from is not the only example of this. I just don't think it's engineer's poor engineering or poor taste, but a deliberate decision by somebody - maybe even the guitarists' - but why?

I was thinking. That someones are not used to that the base is a bit higher in the mix (better in my opinion) than often usual in rock/ metal bands. The lead guitar I hear okay. Its the other guitar that is a bit low... A thing that i like with many rock/ metal bands from japan. Is the skilled basists. And that they are often more audible and fronted in the mix. Both live and in music videos. (Obviously my amateur music lover and thru my ears opinion..) Thankyou for a great chanel / J

Yeah. This is the Shibuya show. Sound was OK, but nowhere near as good as the 2018 Zepp Tokyo show. The guitars were higher in the mix and Misa's bass had an even richer deeper tone. Still a good mix overall for a live show, etc, especially compared to a lot I've seen/heard. But if you can find the Zepp Tokyo shows those are dang near a master class in post mixing. IIRC Saiki (Lead Singer) favors a Sennheiser e 935 microphone.

How is it possible that reactor channels averaging 2-4K views per channel are reporting 30-plus K views for “Bandmaid”, a group of average-skilled musicians strumming along to recorded music during a live performance? How is it possible that reactor channels averaging 50-80 comments are reporting 500 comments for Bandmaid, containing ridiculous claims for average musicians in maid costumes, who never improvise live and whom multiple eyewitnesses swear are not playing their instruments? Who is “Steve”? Who is being paid to write these HILARIOUS claims ? “..the best rock band of the decade....by a lot.” Hahahahahahaha On a serious note: the people whose money you are taking, by lying to them, hire attorneys. (Attorneys are highly educated people who study criminal behavior.) They don’t think it’s right for people to lie. Most of us shy away from dishonest behavior because it feels wrong, and we would not want anyone to do that to us. Some of us will do it anyway, and only stop when we get caught; fined, or put in jail, or both. 30k visits and 450 comments for teenagers in maid costumes strumming along to average music? Riiiiiiiiight. Jerk

that's a lot of wasted time and energy you've spent on a band you seemingly don't like. The wonderful thing about music is that it's subjective and what evokes emotion in one person doesn't in another. Life is more enjoyable if you embrace that rather than berate what you don't understand or like. Focus your energy on something more positive as you're not really achieving anything here other than harbouring negativity.
