My first encounter with BAND-MAID 1. I saw them and thought they were a gimmick band, so I ignored them. 2. For some reason, I clicked on the music video for "Thrill." 3. I realized it was the music I had been looking for for a long time. 4. I searched for their songs and listened to them over and over. I spent a week searching for them. 5. I realized this was the special band I had been looking for. 6. I learned about their background and way of life from various sources. 7. I was impressed by their humanity. 8. I feel happy to be living in the same time as them, even though there isn't much left. 9. Now, for the first time, I have joined their fan club and am attending their live shows far away.

You 100% get Band Maid, I’ve said for a long time that this band has this hidden superpower of igniting nostalgia for songs of the past. It sound like everything you love, but it’s still new and different. All of us that grew up on hard rock and metal instantly are familiar with it. But they take it further and once you’re hooked they give you so much depth to a song that you can listen to it endlessly and get more out of it. It’s phenomenal. Rock on man 🤘🤘🤘

I'm unsure about social commentary with the maid outfits, but they call their concerts servings, and they embody a spirit of service. It's not the normal rock thing of ego and self-aggrandizement, but they work very hard to make sure the fans get the best show that they're capable of giving, from the dense songwriting, to the practice, to the stage show, to their sheer endurance playing so many intricate songs. It's a beautiful thing. You'd cheer for them even if the music wasn't good, just for the effort, but also the music is incredible. What a miracle of a band.

It was about dichotomy. In Japanese culture, the maid motif is common and usually denotes "cute" and "submissive." Miku wanted to pair that cultural mental model with a style of music that was totally opposite. So when a Japanese audience first sees them, they expect to hear sugary idol music. Instead they get smacked with in your face hard rock. The cognative dissonance created is called "the Gap".

@mikeholmes5308
@mikeholmes5308 Ай бұрын
@@armynurseboy agreed. I think the gap is about the fact that people bring expectations to a rock band made up of women. They COULD wear leather and have tattoos and try to be like the boys... but instead they say, nah, get over the fact that you have a preconceived notion of how a band that plays this hard should look. Or suffer. Either way, it's on the listener. Meanwhile we'll be here melting your face off.

Great reaction as always Eric. You get BAND-MAID better than most reaction channels. I always get a kick out of the "you old guys are just obsessed with pretty maids" comments. Do people really think that BAND-MAID's fans pay thousands of dollars to fly around the world to see them play live just because they are attractive? Give me a break. Their fans go to those great lengths because these five ladies are amazing musicians, songwriters, and performers. They aren't just pretty faces. They inspire their fans to work hard, be better people and to be better musicians. There must be hundreds of covers of their songs by their fans on KZbin. That is what makes BAND-MAID special.

Eric, you're absolutely right about Band-Maid's music and why it appeals to so many of us old geezers who grew up on rock and roll. I'm 75 and I have listened to a lot of rock from the early Beatles and Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, The Doors, The Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin, Southern Rock, New Age? stuff like Devo, Blondie, Talking Heads, REM etc. Band-Maid Music just brings me back to why I love that music so much. You and I know that when Miku Kobato started Band-Maid she did it with the specific purpose of "The Gap"- young women wearing cute outfits and then astonishing you with their hard-rock musical prowess. They are still doing that to this day. Yes, they have matured, but their talent was ALWAYS there. Anyone who thinks Band-Maid is a "gimmick " band needs to be whacked with the 2 X 4 of their music.
@rockyetsx70
@rockyetsx70 Ай бұрын
Someone described their music as evoking nostalgia for music that has never existed. Every time I think one of their songs reminds me of something I've heard before I listen to those older bands and songs and it always pales in comparison to what Band-Maid is creating now. The fact that Kanami composes for the ensemble, using all of their strengths, and incorporating the input from the members just makes every song well considered and perfectly knit together. Their music just makes me unreasonably happy. ☺

This is the future. There are elements of the past and present connected, but this is really rock n roll 2.0 being unveiled in front of us. They're not gonna do it just like we did, because they're not boomers or GenX, they're Millennials and grew up in a different world than we did. But they have something that just transcends generations.

This song was made for the ending of the Anime Grendizer U, a kind of forerunner of the Zord big robot fights. The lyrics are geared toward that anime. The great thing about the lyrics, they can evoke many different things than what the lyricist intended. For me it's a Grandpa surrounded by people in black.

Eric, I've been describing Band-Maid in this manner. To me, they are every band, album, song, singer, songwriter, guitarist, bassist, drummer, that I've ever loved over my 58 years of listening to music all rolled up into 5 Japanese ladies who happen to dress like maids. It's like a time capsule that was buried with various genres of rock music from the past going back to the late 60's and 70's and finally dug up in 2013 and the result is Band-Maid. It's a damn shame they are not played on the radio.

Enjoy yourself perspective on different bands. I think you’re one of the better reactors. Keep it up. There are short documentaries about each of the members which gives you some insight. Kanami spent a lot of her early years listening to Chopin. That explains much of her music writing ability, other than creative genius.

Fast-paced, high energy, hard rock banger. Ho hum, just another Bane-Maid song. LOL!!!!! I understand that the music is for a remake of an anime titile "Grendizer U", that was popular in the West, including France. I don't think the "Ou lalas" heard in the video are French influenced. I think they're Maid-Speak for "WE'RE GONNA KICK YOUR ASS!!!!!"

This song is the ending song for the new anime Grendizer U (airing starting in late July in Japan) and is a re-telling of an old anime from the 1970's, basically a mecha anime war series about two star crossed lovers in their fight to save earth from invading aliens and the lyrics are directly related to the story line. Thanks again for reacting the Band-Maid, it helps to spread the word about this great band.

Is this a record for Band-Maid or rock for that matter with five breaks in one song? I've been a rocker since the 60's as a young boy and I've also had an affection for Asian women, mostly Japanese. I first saw their thumbnail for "Thrill" and said I HAVE to see what this is all about. I watched/listened to it and that was 4-1/2 years ago and never looked back and listen to them exclusively. I tried The Warning and aALL the other female Japanese bands and they don't smack my Rock button like Band-Maid does. They are perfect and I'm riding this Rock pony till it or I dies. I really like "Starcrawler' and REALLY REALLY like "Royal Republic". RR is such a great Festival LIVE band and their songs are all tongue in cheek so give them a listen some time.....LIVE! Cool stuff Eric, stay well 🤘🤘🤘

Great commentary, Eric! So many great points. Yes, the social commentary is what they refer to as "The Gap" between maid culture and the rockin' fierceness of their music & stage presence. "I know this song" Yeah, I think if I had a dollar for every reactor who said that, I'd be rich. 😆 That's what kept saying until I gave up and realized, hey, it's really just all the stuff I like in one musically gifted package!

Thank you. When people only talk about them as musicians, or mention one or two of their members but nothing much about their music, I can't help but feel sad. I've been listening to so many genres of music from across the world, so many bands sound kind of "recycled" I'm not saying Band-Maid doesn't recycle some elements in their music, but in a very different way that keeps me intrigued after 4 years of me discovering the band. I hear so many elements in their music. And sometimes the elements are thrown in a very subtle way, that makes you wonder "did I just hear...?" There are whole heaps of bands who are technically as good or better than Band-Maid, and mix genres but not in the way Band-Maid does. That's why I keep coming back to this band. Every single day.

I really like this song, my only issue with it is not on the band, but it either KZbin or something with production, but there's a compression sound with it, especially with the cymbals that make it sound a bit off.🤘The song is the ending for an anime Grendizer U, that is currently airing, so it lyrics are reflecting it. It is super popular in in Saudi Arabia and France, where the ohh la la's come from.

My first impression of this band was that it was gimmicky. The image put me off, and the language barrier was also very much a thing. And then I heard "Different" a couple years ago and decided I was a complete idiot. Don't judge a book by its cover, and don't judge a band by its outfits. My suggestion to Eric is that he has that Philistine listen to some Band-Maid songs. Ignore the image of the band and just listen - the talent is glaringly obvious.

One of the few reactors whose clips I watch until the very end, simply because I'm interested and appreciate your opinion and explanations. You verbalized some things that I feel myself, but I did not dare to explain. Visual catch and sexuality? Baby boomers grew up in the days of bikinis, mini skirts,... not the Middle Ages. Modern western popular music is based on twerking bare bottoms, that's "innocent" and acceptable? I assume that none of the older fans see BM as sexual objects, rather as their own playful children
