Okay, names, pronunciation, nicknames, and roles, in order that they joined the band. Miku Kobato - mee-koo - Kuruppo, the Little Pigeon, the Little Engine Who Will - band founder, backing (and occasionally lead) vocals, rhythm guitar, principal lyricist, tireless Spokespigeon and PR machine. Wielder of weapons grade cuteness. So determined to see her band succeed that she fired herself as lead singer (she decided her voice wasn't strong enough for hard rock), then went looking for a replacement. Learned to play guitar after the band was formed. Kanami Tono - kah-nah-mee - Kanamincho or just Mincho - lead guitar, keyboards, principal composer and arranger. On stage, she's a savant mad riffer with a room temperature IQ and a huge crush on Saiki. In reality, she's a genius, and not just musically- she has a degree in economics with honors from Tokyo University. Akane Hirose - ah-kah-neh - A-chan, the Gorilla - drums, sequencing, snacks, the leader the band doesn't have. What you see is what you get- a cheerful jock with a huge appetite who burns off the calories murdering her drums. Frequently snacks between songs. MISA - mee-sah - the Barefoot Assassin, MISA MISA MISA! - bass, booze, occasional wet work. Usually stone faced. Barely acknowledges the audience's existence. Always has a beer or a bottle of Jim Beam on her Orange amp. Originally, these were ways of coping with stage fright. These days, that's just how the assassin rolls. Saiki Atsumi - sah-ee-kee (but Psyche is close enough) - the Ice Queen, Sensei, Sai-chan - lead vocals, some lyrics, the "We're done" girl. Fashionista and train nerd. In total command on stage; hides behind Miku off stage (she's actually kind of shy).

Welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 58 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive 10 year back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and bad-ass musicians to boot. They take the maid café concept literally. They call their concerts "servings" and their fans "Masters and Princesses". Oh, and Miku is an 810 year old small pigeon. Welcome to the pigeon hole Po! The band are: Miku Kobato "Little Pigeon" - band founder - rhythm guitar and second vocals. Main lyricist. Claims to be an 810 year old pigeon and makes pigeon noises when she speaks. Po! Very good at poker, into horses - betting on them and eating them. Very clumsy, may fall into ditches. The heart and soul of the band. Saiki Atsumi "The Ice Queen" - Lead vocalist and frontwoman. The youngest member at 29. Into train spotting and collecting trainers (sports shoes). Very girly, into doing her nails and is a fashion icon. Really into Baseball and the Hanshin Tigers. Don't mess with her you will lose. But she has a heart of gold and a killer dry sense of humour. Recently started writing lyrics. Has final say on songs. Kanami Tono - "Kanamincho" or usually just "Mincho" for short. Lead guitar and an absolute genius songwriter. Total riff machine. Has two personas. Normally a tiny cute shy very polite lady who seems very innocent (the band have to explain dirty jokes to her). Until she puts on her guitar. As the band say "then she gets quite violent" - she turns into the shredding rock star she is. Takes guitar off, back to the little girl. Likes cake, coffee and is totally infatuated by Saiki. She adores Saiki very much, to everyone's amusement. Akane Hirose - "The Gorilla" on Drums. Seems to be the sane member of the band, but is actually the band clown. Has an enormous appetite, seen eating in a lot of MV's. Eats a lot of bananas including on stage, hence the nickname. But she is terrible at actual cooking. Usually has a big grin on her face while drumming manically, Akane was also a DJ (under the name DJ Achi) and likes dancing and goofing with MISA. MISA (all caps, no last name) "The Barefoot Assassin" on bass. An absolute bass prodigy, MISA is very shy onstage (a total clown offstage with Akane). Nickname comes from the fact she plays barefoot and looks like an assassin. Because of shyness often drinks onstage, you can often spot a bottle of Jim Beam on her amp. She drinks it neat. Lately drinking more beer than whiskey though, good girl. Doesn't say much, but when she does it's usually totally hilarious! At a lot of concerts you will hear the fans chanting MISA! MISA! MISA! which has become a slogan.

This is a band that has ten years of great music from the early punkish pop vibe to the heavier rock element of today. Congratulations in finding one of the great bands around today.

I think it's important to set expectations. Band Maid is, at it's core, a hard rock band. They dabble in a ton of various genres (pop, punk, metal, thrash, blues, prog, etc) but almost all of their songs have a hard rock core to them with a catchy chorus and a stupid amount of great riffs, and just generally excellent musicianship across the board. I think Shambles is their most "Thrash" style song and is one of their heavier songs. So they're not going to be heavier than this really though some are close, but they kill it with every subgenre they try out. So, if you like variety, this band will impress you. They're constantly push themselves to grow.

Dude, straight up, BAND-MAID is imo the greatest rock band I have heard in DECADES! So musically diverse that every time I listen to them my mind is blown all over again. No shit, I have a play list on my music streaming service that is just a few minutes shy of 6 hours, it's all BAND-MAID and it is my most played play list. Don't think you can pidgeon hole this band as metal or prog or jazz influenced, they are so much more than just what I can think to mention off the top of my head. Again, imo TOTAL ROCK GODDESSES making the best music I have heard in DECADES! FYI, please take the time to listen to studio versions before live versions, they are known among their fans for changing arrangements on their own songs for one off live performances to the point that they are covering their own songs! The bassist MISA is on a par with Flea from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. She actually plays a permanent solo in every song of Band-Maid. She can play with or without a pick and can switch in a split second by hiding the pick under her right index finger. She is a fan favorite and very shy in front of the audience. That's why she drinks alcohol during live performances. Mostly beer and whiskey. Backstage she is totally different. According to the other band members, she likes to tell dirty jokes and make nonsense. She is very good friends with the drummer Akane. They also spend a lot of time together in their private lives. Akane also brought her into the band. They know each other from the music school they both went to. She almost left the band again because she thought the project was unsuccessful. You have to know that in the beginning they were more of a pop band than a rock band. The manager was almost ready to give up, but then came "Thrill" and with it international attention and finally success. Since then, things have been going uphill for Band-Maid.

Who Band-Maid is? They are THE band at the end of the food chain when it comes to hard rock! 😎 Believe me, of all the journeys Japanese bands have taken you on so far, this one might be the longest and most adventurous. Active since 2013 with an unchanged line-up and a catalog of 130+ songs, of which NOT A SINGLE ONE can be described as bad. (I didn't believe it at first either, but it's true!) I'm just saying, welcome to the pigeon hole! .... Yes, we really do call it that, and there's a reason for it. Well, do you like little stories? 🤭 Once upon a time, while working in a maid cafe, a young pigeon named Miku (rhythm guitar, vocals) had the idea to combine the cute image of her work outfit with hard music. So she went in search of fellow musicians and found guitarist Kanami (lead guitar, songwriter). She, in turn, knew a drummer she had already worked with, who goes by the name of Akane [Ah-ka-nee]. The only thing missing at that point was someone to play bass. But this position was quickly filled, since Akane went to the same music school as an excellent bassist named MISA. Now that everything seemed to be perfect, the young Miku, who got everything rolling and actually saw herself as the main singer, quickly realized that her voice lacked a bit of the necessary power for this kind of music. So she started looking again for a lead singer and found the perfect person in Saiki [Sai-key]. However, this development created a little problem for the young Miku, as she had never played an instrument before and her voice alone was not enough. So what should she do now? Determined as the young Miku is, she didn't let this get her down and asked Kanami if she could teach her to play the guitar. First, BAND-MAID uses a pigeon hole as opposed to a rabbit hole (you'll figure that out later). Just don't pigeon hole their music. I am in my 70's and it has been a long time since I have heard rock/metal as good as this band. I was lucky enough to see them live in Salt Lake City last summer. Believe me they are even better live. These women can just straight out kill it! I had watched the music scene degenerate over the last 30 yrs. into utter crap. Thank God for Band Maid!!! Thank God for Japan and all the other rock/metal bands that originate from there. They have saved my music soul. There are so many great ones there, but Band Maid leads the pack. Whatever you do when it comes to listening to them do the live ones first. They are incredible, honest injun, no BS, the real deal!!!!!!!

I’m genuinely shocked that you haven’t dipped-in previously…otherwise I would have recommended it. These Rock Goddesses are the top tier of the top tier of rock bands, unbelievably talented, creative, professional, hard working and committed to their rock journey. They've paid their dues in dives all across the world and have built up a loyal following over the last decade which saw them headline their own stadium gig recently. Since you have chosen to start at the most recent, IMO you need to see how far they have come in their ten years as a band. So, you should go back to the song that "saved" this incredible band. The song THRILL literally saved the band from being canceled by their label at the time. Plus it is a banger as well. After that just throw a dart and try whatever song it lands on. Band-Maid is an excellent band. Kanami is definitely one of my favourite guitarists and they are all great at what they do. In addition to Kanami, musicians generally acknowledge the talent of Misa on bass and Akane on drums. Saiki has a powerful and distinctive voice and Miku (possibly the least technical musician) is a competent vocalist herself and a good rhythm guitarist as well as being the mastermind (and small pigeon) behind the band. They are great characters with an ever-growing fanbase. While you're discovering the amazing world of Japan's female bands, you totally have to check out NEMOPHILA, and HANABIE. Two the the very best, IMO.

Their music runs the gambit of rock styles. I've been calling them Progressive Pop Punk Funk Rock. There are some classic rock, blues, jazz, metal influences mixed in for good measure. Shambles is one of the songs that shows off their fast paced high energy chaos, others songs of theirs in this category, Blackhole (TBH all the songs from the Unseen World album and most songs since that album), Different, Blooming, and all of the instrumentals; From Now ON, Don't Be Long and, Onset. There are "slow-er" style songs like; Daydreaming, Anemone, Endless Story, Mirage, Page, Start over and, About Us. There is a Band-Maid song for any mood. They have like 6.5 hours of music all of it is great. My Top 5 songs from them are: Corallium, I'll, I Still Seek Revenge, H-G-K, Blooming, Fate, Spirit!!, Daydreaming, Puzzle, FREEZER, Beauty and the Beast. Once you listen to all of it, it is impossible to only pick 5 songs.
