I’m finally getting into Band of Brothers and I’m so eager to follow these characters through their torment & trials. What did everyone make of David Schwimmer’s character, Sobel? I think he was a good addition to the plot if only to make Winters look more decent and able by comparison. Though, he was wholly loathsome!
@Knowledgeispower4829 сағат бұрын
According to the book, they hated him but the men also credited him with getting them ready for war. They say they were more comfortable at night and they were in fantastic shape which helped them when they went into combat. So most credited the training with helping them survive the war.
@krisfrederick50018 сағат бұрын
Sobel's actual story is very sad after the War. They typed casted Schimmer because of his inability to be believed in and it worked brilliantly. I highly suggest you see Apt Pupil. Also with him and World War 2 but in a very different sense.

Just for that, you're running up Currahee with a full pack and I will be watching - FALL OUT! Just kidding - I think it worked well for the show but in real life even though the men didn't like him, they admitted that he trained them well and was a big part of what made Easy Company as good as they were.

I was in the army when the first episode aired, right before 9-11. Strangely enough, with all the craziness going on and the rush to mobilize troops, we would make time to watch every episode. It was a morale booster for many of us, and we could relate to the characters and what they were going through.

Band of Brothers wouldn't have been possible without all of the technology that was developed for Saving Private Ryan. The budget was $125 million dollars (equivalent of $250 million today). It's widely considered to be the most accurate depiction of ground warfare in WWII and will still be watched and studied a hundred years from now. Glad you chose it for your reactions, it's amazing.

I happen to be a former paratrooper myself (82nd Airborne). One of my sergeants once said that there is a fine line between hardass and dumbass, and you won’t see that line until after you’ve crossed it. Soebel was universally hated by his men but even thye later admitted thatbhis harsh training really helped them survive what they faced once they got into the action. That being said, there are many thing depicted here… like denying soldiers access to the water in their canteens or going through a soldier’s personal property without cause… that might’ve been okay back then, but even as far back as the 1970s it would have gotten him relieved of command, especially the denial of water, and possibly worse depending on the severity of the consequences of his orders. Oh and Soebel’s claim that the soldier’s had no personal property is BS, or least is now. By the time these guys got to Airborne school they had already been through basic training and infantry training. Even when I was in Airborne school in the early 1990s we had personal property. Mail and letters were chief among them.

First of all thank you for your service and I would like to add that if you've watched the series The Pacific you will know that at one point they were extremely short of drinkable water!! As cruel as Sobel's act is, and as much as it would be against regulations now, it seems to be a PERHAPS necessary part of training just in case the situation arises where you're short on water!! Just like making them run right after a meal of spaghetti. You're not always going to be able to regulate when the enemy will attack and when you have to be ready to move!!! Now we can't say whether or not Sobel did THAT as an act of being a sociopath or whether he truly had the intention of getting them ready for any scenario!!

"You've done it now, Yank. You've captured me." I think that may be my favorite line of this episode. Goodness, you're in for a treat with this series. In the closing scenes of the finale ep of Masters of the Air, I think they did a nod to that character as there is an elderly man, filmed from behind, riding his bicycle down a lane while wearing the same kind of coat and hat as the gent did in BoB. If it is a nod, it is a good one, took me a sec to realize it.

Thank you, Kate, for taking on Band of Brothers. You are picking things up well. Don't worry about the names, you will learn them as you go. It's about the salutes: after getting chewed out by Colonel Sink (played by Dale Dye, who also did their "boot camp") the NCOs file by Winters and offer a respectful salute. After getting reassigned to Chilton Foliat, Captain Sobel goes by Winters in the jeep and completely ignores the salute he is giving. Respect. It is earned.

I am a veteran of the US Military, and I can tell you one thing for certain. Your brother never goes alone, and you leave No Man Behind ever. One of the best parts of this episode is when Lieutenant Winters pulls each man up individually so they can do the airborne swaddle, which is why they walk so funny because they're so encumbered with equipment. The scene where Winters and Meehan are figuring out where they are jumping based on their training runs? During the invasion, the Airborne Divisions had to take a circuitous route flying on the edges of the armada before turning in on their objectives. This was due to a friendly fire incident that happened the year before during the invasion of Sicily where planes carrying troops from the 82nd Airborne Division were mistaken for German Bombers and fired on. Several were shot down before the gunners realized their mistake.

I watch many documentaries about WW2. Captain Sobel was instrumental in building the brotherhood of Easy Company. The court-martial of Lieutenant Winters never happened. Colonel Sink by moving Sobel to the training school ingeniously solved several problems. 1) He really did need a good trainer for the school. 2) It allowed the court-martial to go away. 3) His disciplining of the sergeants showed the consequences of the act. He could not just let them get off scot-free. But he could have been much harsher. The gentleman in his tweed as you called it was actually the German troop they were supposed to capture.

I found David Schwimmer’s portrayal of Sobel so interesting. He did prepare the company well but apparently was petty enough to warrant reassignment. A good job by an actor to engender the animus of the audience the entire episode then actually evoke sympathy in the one scene where he is reassigned only to throw that away by disregarding Winters’ salute.

David Schwimmer did a brilliant job as an actor in this episode. You see him make his entry as hopelessly typecast "Ross" and within 15 seconds he is Capt Sobel and remains so for the rest of the time.

This series was taken from the book, Band of Brothers, written by Stephen Ambrose. He'd conducted many interviews with the men to write it. There are mistakes in the book which are carried over to the series, but it wasn't intentional. Time will be compressed obviously, and they'll have one guy do something on film that actually was done by someone else. But all and all, it's pretty accurate telling of their story. This is focusing on one Company, there were hundreds and thousands of Companies throughout the allied forces that did just as great a job, which is why the allies won.

I remember as a child walking through the library. I saw a book with a picture of the American invasion force on the cover. I stopped in awe to pick it up and investigate further. I wondered through the pages seeing all these photos a military personal and equipment that just captured me. It was a book on WW2. I checked it out and that began my fascination with the historical events of WW2, and it eventually lead me to this mini-series. I’m here for your journey as well! Thank you so much for sharing it with us.

Great reaction Kate like always, my absulote favourite series. love it! Band of Brothers is more than just a WWII drama; it’s a poignant reminder of the realities of war. It underscores the importance of remembering WWII, not just as a historical event, but as a testament to human resilience and solidarity in the face of adversity. The series brings to life the experiences of the soldiers, their camaraderie, and their sacrifices, making this important history tangible for every generation, a chance to contemplate the profound lessons of WWII - the cost of freedom, the perils of intolerance, and the value of unity. It serves as a powerful tool for education and remembrance, ensuring that the stories of WWII soldiers continue to resonate today and for generations to come. If you read the book the men of Easy did credit Sobel with making them tough and ready for combat. They were very comfortable at night and very physically fit. They did not think he would have been a good combat leader but they do give him the credit for the training toughness. Btw dont forget your tissues on future episodes. Keep up the good work.

Look up the author Stephen E. Ambrose. He is an author who wrote many books about soldiers and their experiences in combat. He used letters from soldiers to their families, first hand accounts from soldiers and the stories told to soldier's families for the material in his books. He is regarded as one of the most historically accurate war authors who never actually saw war. His books had a lot to do with the production of this series. His accounts from still living soldiers and the letters from soldiers to their families gave this series an authenticity many Veterans commented on.

A redeeming quality of captain Sobel was his unintended ability to cause the men of Easy Company to unite and bond in opposition to their contempt toward him. While in training at Camp Toccoa, many of the prospectives washed out due to the harshness of the training. It was Sobel's job, and rightly so, to push the men hard to reveal the weak links and remove them. Although he was well suited for such a role, it appeared he was incapable of ameliorating his despotic nature once that phase of training was completed. In field training Sobel showed that he was inept, losing the confidence of the men.

5:30 "They always say don't leave a man behind but he was very strict about not helping him." They don't leave each other behind on the battlefield, or even in battlefield training. But this is physical training. Exercise. And this is an elite group. If they help the weakest man too much, he won't get stronger. If they make the weakest man do it on his own, he will get stronger or fail. If he fails, he goes back to the regular army. Either way, the men who remain, with that (stronger) man or without him, will be a better, more physically fit group.

First time watching your channel. Terrific reaction -- defined of course by how much you picked up on, and so much you did not miss from this amazing series that, yes, is only getting started and we are excited for you to watch in its entirety. Your being British I was hoping you would get a kick out of the old man on the bicycle scene and the line he says, "You did it Yanks, You captured me." Being American, I always get the same emotion from that warm little interaction in that we are friendly 'sibling' nations, England and the USA and it shows so much in the added touch of that scene. This series is amazing, an undeniably favorite of all time for me. There's nothing else like it. It's character development, through amazing performances, and above all the respect it pays to the real souls who were there by taking us into their experiences like no other production I've seen, are its greatest attributes. Enjoy the education of not only a major event in our recent world history, but an incredible story of humanity that will unfold in the coming episodes (via the sense of duty and sacrifice of a generation) and the feelings that may give you. Cheers!

This series is going to be tough to watch. The average age of a soldier in WW2 was 22. Most actors are well over 22, which sort of perverts the tragedy of their deaths or wounding. My father-in-law was 17 when he signed up for WW2.

To fully grasp the gravity of Capt Sobel being replaced: Being in command of a unit is the top privilege any self-respecting officer aspires to. Losing command of your front-line combat arms company before it sees action would be devastating and embarrassing for a captain, and the end of a career. The colonel did his best to soften the blow with some flashy compliments.

A great series. It gets even more intense as you go along. Episode 9 is the hardest to watch. There is an unofficial 11th part called "We Stand Together". Sums and wraps up the series real well. David Schwimmer, who plays Sobel, is famous for playing "Ross" on "Friends" a great funny TV Show that ran 11 seasons from 1994-2005. A very funny show if you have not seen it. It also launched the careers of many well known actors and actresses including Courtney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow and the late Matthew Perry. If you want to see a great film that has the war as a general backdrop but the people and events are fictional. I recommend "The Final Countdown" from 1980. A great film about a US Navy ship from 1979 going back in time to December 7th 1941. It is a serious film with a scifi twist. It stars Martin Sheen, the late Kirk Douglas (Father of Actor Michael Douglas) and Kathaine Ross. A great film, that is science fiction, but still respectful to the WWII era. A great film! Great reaction Kate!

Wonderful Kate! I just love your empathy for the men who served, you have a real understanding of thier duty and sacrifice. The scale of D day was enormous, and Spielberg is able to convey its scope convincingly. The gentleman on the bike most certainly fought in WWI and felt a certain knowing kinship with the American soldiers running amuck the English countryside , what was the saying about the American forces based in England ? Oh I remember, " thier over paid over sexed and over here" 😅 I so enjoyed watching this with you and look forward to the next installment. 🙂❤ 0:26 0:26

One thing about them looking into the camera: I don't read that so much as them breaking the fourth wall (which implies a take to the audience), rather I see it as a thousand yard stare (i.e. they aren't looking at anything in particular, but the camera happens to be looking right into their eyes). If that was the intent, it's an interesting subversion of the fourth wall norm.

The gloves that winters wore in the jeep are still used in the military and federal govt.

I absolutely love your accent! Love this series. Will have to do The Pacific after this now. It’s the Marines fighting Japan in the Pacific. Same directors etc from Band of Brothers.

You see Captain Sobel (David Schwimmer) as a horrible man. Maybe. As portrayed here, I'm sure he personally has a lot of cruelty in him. The other side of the story is that the men of Easy Company gave him full credit for all the training that kept them alive in some of the hardest fighting of the war.

You spotted Damien Lewis can you find the other British actors in the show. Christianson the man who drank from his canteen is a young Michael Fassbender. I know the actors portraying Liebgott and Sargent Martin are British. Keep your eyes open for James McAvoy and Tom Hardy.

Funny you should mention it, just about every one of the survivors of EASY company, when asked about it, accredited the training of Sobel for their reason for having had survived!!!😮 Although I'm not so sure that was the motivation of Sobel.😢

You make a 60 yr Old Man very Sad. Lol. Those eyes. This and the other episodes will explain to you why we call those Men and Woman who served in the Armed forces in WW2 The Greatest Generation. You seem to be an old soul. I don't mean age. I mean your values seem to coincide with the values of generations past. I believe in my heart you would have made a hell of a WRAC or WREN officer. I look forward to seeing more reactions of Band of Brothers.

Also idk if it’s a problem on my end or in editing but all of the voices in the show are panned to the right ear. Yours is fine, though.

Hello there I just discovered your channel and I'm loving it. Band of Brothers is the best movie film or series of all time. But PLEASE PLEASE after you seen all 10 episodes watch the documentary on the man of Bob. It's calleded " We stand alone together the man of easy company:Band of brothers. It's even better then the Bob show. Just to let you know that every episode gets harder and harder as you go along . Only good one is episode 10. Witch is the ending.

When you called David Schwimmer "Ross", you sounded like Emily 😄
