The man fascinates me. You know he went from a LAPD police officer to being appointed by Reagan to the court of appeals. When you reminded him of this he just shrugged and said he realized he wanted to be a lawyer after he saw how much money he paid to his divorce attorney and he donated money to Reagans campaign to get appointed. When you ask him about when he told the guys to leave him behind for the Germans he claims he has a terrible memory but what he does remember is the guys lie all the time and you can't trust anything they say and laughs. So humble. He also had a mouth that would make a sailor jealous so I love watching his interviews.

40 yrs ago, I lived in Holland. I used to cross the infamous "Bridge Too Far" everyday on my bike. I was aware at all times how hard the Allies had tried to take that bridge and how Operation Market Garden had failed. I feel privileged to have heard firsthand from people who lived through the occupation how they survived it. I even met Miep Gies once, who helped hide Anne Frank. They're all but gone now. I'm pleased to say, they're not forgotten. All I can say is Band of Brothers keeps the memory alive of all those who sacrificed in every way imaginable for the freedom of Europe. God bless them, every one!

My 7th grade teacher, Robert Dunning, was in Baker Company, ? Battalion, 506th. And later a technical consultant for “A Bridge Too Far”. Like my great grandfather who was a Civil War veteran, Mr. Dunning never told us of the horrors of war but recalled humerus episodes.

Shame they kind of belittle and misrepresent the British tank unit in Episode 4 (real life B Squadron, 44th Royal Tank Regiment) during the fighting around Nuenen, Netherlands. The episode portrays them as clueless and incompetent whereas in reality they were far more combat hardened and experienced than the 101st Airborne was at the time.

We watched this in detention/study hall in high school. Pretty amazing thing and powerful that this series could keep 15/20 "problematic" teens completely captivated, silent and even shed tears in the classroom. No one ever made fun of anyone else or told other students about this. It's been 20 years since that time.. and I still get teary at certain episodes or thinking of my favorite characters.

Because the film was purposely shot and processed to be a bit grainy and desaturated, a 4k version would look no different from the current Blu-ray.... which is very close the original DVD.
@CALLE92JOHANSSON
@CALLE92JOHANSSON 3 жыл бұрын
@@billwellford376 It was shot on 35mm film and the grainy effect is mostly post production so I'm sure that is not true. Sure, it's not the largest format film for making moving pictures but a rescan and output to 4x the resolution of the current Blu-ray release is sure to give more detail.
@billwellford376
@billwellford376 3 жыл бұрын
@@CALLE92JOHANSSON I think you missed my point. Yes, the desaturation and grainy look is mostly a result of post production work. But they went to a lot of effort to make it look that way for a reason. It's part of the story. They're never going to remaster a "clean" version that hasn't been given the same post production visual effects. That's not the movie Spielberg and Hanks wanted to make.
@CALLE92JOHANSSON
@CALLE92JOHANSSON 3 жыл бұрын
@@billwellford376 I did not miss your point, you however seemed to miss my point which was RESOLUTION. I have 100 inch screen and if they released BoB in 4K I might consider upgrading my projector for that experience. The difference even on a 50 inch TV is palpable with high resolution content. I never made a point about the grain.
@billwellford376
@billwellford376 3 жыл бұрын
@@CALLE92JOHANSSON No, I understood, but you're not going to get "more detail", as you stated, when that detail is purposely reduced in post production. In this case the lack of clarity has nothing to do with the resolution. It's the same reason you won't get brighter colors in this movie with a 4K resolution. You can't bring out finer detail when there is no finer detail in the image. Band of Brothers used the same filming techniques used in Saving Private Ryan. "Saving Private Ryan used EXR 200T outdoors with partial correction (81EF instead of an 85B), push-processed, and used a 100 IR level of ENR processing on the prints. "Band of Brothers" created this look digitally in post color-correction after scanning the negative to 2K."

Some of my most cherished memories is working on Episode 5: Crossroads, Tom Hanks directing, being in the barn when James H. (Mo) Alley, Jr, was rushed in with 54 shrapnel wounds form a grenade, and laid wounded onto a table to be treated, it was my job as a prosthetic artist to make George Calil up, 5hours later we were on set, I liked Tom as an actor for many years, but after working on that episode, I found tremendous respect in his astounding professionalism as a member of the 'crew'. A nice man and very approachable in every sense. A pleasure I hope to experience again one day in my career.

Strangely enough, I just started watching the series 3 days ago, FOR THE FIRST TIME. Now, I am able to follow this podcast on the heels of that experience. I am extremely amazed and blessed by the timing. Before I bought the series on VUDU, I tried to figure out if I'd seen it or not. I'd always heard how brilliant the show was, but that was before I became a self-educated student of WW2. I've watched many movies and documentaries, so I wasn't sure if this had been one of them. After a little researching, I decided to go ahead and buy it. I couldn't be more happy with that decision. I had never seen it which is obvious to me now, since I know I would have remembered it. God, this was outstanding. I look forward to following the podcast and then watching the show again. (Wish I could read the book, but my eyes are poor.)

I continue to think about these men and realize these movies and books are all we have left of these men and their experiences.

Band of Brothers was life changing and made me more a history buff, especially WWII, I could plan a nice trip to Italy and have a good time, but I’m planing to go to Normandy on a Band of Brothers tours I’m so excited to go

I remember watching the first episode the evening of 9/11, after flying out of Phoenix and having to turn around and go back when the airspace closed. We were seething mad and not sure what was coming next in America's new war. Band of Brothers carried the message of "Don't be enraged; be mindful and effective as you go at the enemy. Fight as brothers against the foe."

A magnificent mini-series. I'm a big war film, war documentary, war mini-series fan. What I loved the most about this series were the personal stories that were told with the backdrop of this terrible war. An amazing production. I have Band of Brothers on DVD. I bought it for my father-in-law for his birthday and when he passed away, it was given to me. My son and I still watch it quite often.

I was lucky - when Stephen Ambrose moved into the house two-doors-down from me in Helena, Montana. He had just finished his Lewis & Clark book, Undaunted Courage, and had bought a second house in Montana. As a history buff, I got to form a bond with him. And he talked to my father quite often about the Korean War, as my father was a Korean War Veteran. I wish I'd spent more time talking to him, but I did not realize what an opportunity I'd been given. And he was a smoker, so I should have known his time was limited. There is a bond between the reporter/researcher/writer and his subject. At least, there was in the past. Now, I'm not so sure. But, I think Ambrose interviewed these men, and then tried to be as honest as he could be in writing out their stories.

A veteran of the 29th ID told my father and I, Dad was also a WW2 vet, I was a Cold War vet, over beer that SPR showed Omaha Beach more realistically than any other movie, but reality was indescribably worse. I held my tears among those two heroes (my Dad survived Korea) but tear up every time I see anything about it, like I am now.

Over the last 6 weeks I've been lucky to visit Omaha Beach, the American Cemetery, Sainte-Mère-Église, Carentan, all points between in Normandy, and then over to Bastogne and Foy, including going down to honor Muck and Penkala at their graves (and of course all the others lesser known) in Luxembourg. All make me so grateful for the sacrifices made. Too many unforgettable moments to have a single most unforgettable, but I will always appreciate Speirs, with all of the legends surrounding his courage and other actions, honoring Lipton before telling him about his promotion.

In the winter of 2019 I established the worlds' only Caddie School For Soldiers in Scotland where we bring together soldiers from the UK, the US and Canada who served in these last two wars, live together for a month, and help them rise above the darkness of war that has haunted them, train them to be caddies then get them jobs at some of the most peaceful and beautiful places in the world. These splendid soldiers all remind me of the soldiers of Easy Company. It is their humble nobility that has made this the greatest privilege of my life to spend time with them.

I can’t even count the amount of times I’ve seen the episode “Day of Days” and in 2019 for the 75th anniversary of d day I was sitting in the town of Ste Marie du Mont in full 101ab kit when this young farmer approaches me and asks if I knew what Brécourt was. I told him yes absolutely and he responded with “my aunt and uncle own the farm. I just finished milking the cows, would you like to come visit?” It was a truly incredible moment standing in that same infamous field and crouching in the same ditch that easy did on that morning. If any of you ever get the opportunity to visit Normandie on one of the big 5 year anniversaries I guarantee you’ll never forget it. The entirety of the region is occupied by 40’s music and attire. Convoys of Shermans and M10 destroyers take to the hedgerows. It’s like a portal back in time. If you’re an American it makes you feel truly proud of your nationality. I was thanked by multiple old French men and women just for being American.
