Fun fact: the maps used for DDay were largely inspired by the French/Normandy Michelin restaurant guide. Because surveilance planes only had current, possibly bombed or otherwise war damaged locations to visualize maps for, 1939 Michelin Restaurant guide maps for Normandy that made their way to the states pre-war were the most accurate roadmaps the planners could rely on for accurate depiction of the area - so they used that to calculate accurate troop movements

The surviving members of Easy Company gave a lot of credit to Sobel for preparing the men for war so well. Sobel was a great garrison leader not a combat leader.

I never saw any fault in this. Everyone has their strengths that they should play to, and apparently Sobel was a killer trainer and was where he'd best serve the effort

Re the webbing, yes! You can stick twigs, ferns, even lichen in it - you can see this in the scene when Sobel panics and move his men too soon during combat training. The opposing soldier who pops up has a helmet full of greenery.

I'm not a fan of war movies or tv shows, but I rewatched Band of Brothers many times. I'm glad I get to rewatch part of it with you and to listen to your understanding of this part of US and world history.

D-Day was originally going to be on June 5, but it was postponed due to weather. However, the postponement was fortuitous because on June 6 the German officer in charge of the coastal defenses was celebrating his wife’s birthday in Germany

Sobel was no coward. He was instrumental in forming one of the best units in the army.

Typically the airborne would go in roughly around Midnight to 1 AM to seize control of important, bridges and intersections behind enemy lines to stop German reinforcements from rushing to the beach to oppose amphibious assault. Also, the airborne would seek to destroy enemy artillery that could be used to fire on the amphibious assault, which would take place just after sunrise. And doing these things, paratroopers would be surrounded by the enemy until amphibious troops advanced forward, seized ground

Everyone: It's Ross!!!!! Everyone a few minutes later: F*ckin' Sobel... I take it this is a re-upload, so there's probably not a lot that can be said that hasn't already been said. It was interesting that you mentioned the Peter Principle in reference to Sobel's abilities - I've not seen anyone else do that. When dealing with the military, remember Doug's corollary: People rise to their level of incompetence, then keep on rising. You don't see that a lot in this series, but in reality it's a common thing.

yeah, i'm a little late to the party but in case nobody else clued you in, the true scale of that jump was that there were 13,400 men jumping that night along with 4000 gliders carrying equipment and such. This is the story of one company of men, Easy Company, as told by Dick Winters and the other survivors. Btw, are we all a bunch of girls too fragile to glimpse some raw hanging meat? ...i'm gonna check out episode 2 with you but if that fuzzy shit is how you roll then i doubt i'll hang around beyond that.
