Before entertainment became full-time for me, I was an Uber driver in LA from 2014-2018. I would get lots of celebrities in the car, because that's Los Angeles. I never geeked out or even told people that I knew who they were, because I think the anonymity was probably refreshing. At one point, I picked Dolores up in Marina Del Rey to go to Venice Beach. At 10 minutes or so, not exactly a big ride, but a ride I'll never forget. She looked EXACTLY the same as I remembered, with the short hair and everything. She was filled to the brim with boundless energy and the air that she had just come out on the other side of hell. She kept dropping these little hints about who she was: "in the Irish world record books," "honorary doctorate," and finally "I was in a band called the Cranberries" to which I replied [paraphraing because it's been nearly a decade] "Yeah, I know. Nobody looks AND talks like you. I just wanted to give you a peaceful ride. I kind of came up on your work when I was a teenager." Trust me when I say that this was the hardest ride to keep my cool with, in that regard. I grew up a fan and even used Zombie in a history class I taught. Once we had broken through the barrier of anonymity, the gloves were off, and it was astounding. The conversation skewed heavily to the "big years" and she told me how utterly lonely her life had been at the height of their fame. How she essentially lived in the woods and a car would show up to bring her to a plane which would bring her to a city which would bring her to a car which would bring her to either a hotel or a venue, and then in reverse once the obligation was finished. She said this all with pep, by the way. She said, with a smile on her face, that fame was a comfortable way to be unfathomably lonely. But now she had regained some of her person back. She could exist without being harassed. And she was SO excited about it. Like, the excitement was palpable, and I could feel her electricity from the backseat. The interaction soon finished (again, MDR to Venice is a very short trip), but I got what arguably might be one of the most surreal and eye-opening experiences of my life. She was so open vulnerable to me, a stranger driving her to the beach. We actually hugged at the end of the ride, and I told her I was as excited for her new work as she was, after hearing her gush so hopefully about the next phase of her life. It became a fun little harmless anecdote for a few years, until we all lost her in 2018. I wept for my 10-minute friend, as I'm sure a lot of us have done before. Thank you for this video. I honestly tend to creep more than comment (which, I know, algorithm killer) but I wanted to share my 10-minute story with a bunch of strangers on the internet.

I have never been a person who idolized a celebrity or entertainer. But Dolores O’Riordan’s death was one that was actually really tough for me. Jaw drop, hit me hard when I heard the news. Like, they were someone close to you? I was introduced to the Cranberries while I was deployed once and heard “Ode to My Family” being played by one of my crew chiefs on a tape player. I had to get ahold of the entire album. Loved every track. “Zombie”. Come on. Then you find of this is the same band that did “Linger” and “Dreams.” What a range of rock intensity levels. I thought these guys have been out a couple years now? And you’re just getting caught up with them? Became a Cranberries fanatic. I always thought Dolores’s lyrics were heart tugging even with their anthems… and not just a little bit of a shout out to her idea of faith. Subtly. Where my intense appreciation of her talent turned to admiration and respect, was when she took her Mother to see The Pope. Yep. You can think whatever about faith and the Catholic Church you want, but O’Riordon believed and it was important to her and doubly so to honor her mother doing that. I actually read some of the backlash from her fans to “keep that stuff to yourself”. Digs of her not really living the life? In other words, pour your entire heart out to us in your music, but keep your religion to yourself. I guess her answer to that was singing “Ave Maria” with Pavarotti. “Ave Maria” with her heavy brogue, it just demonstrated the connection between faith and the ordinary person for me. I loved her rendition. Loved her music even more. But most of all in remembering Dolores O’Riordan, I still think back at times away from family when I was still in the Army and how music back then was like a therapy to get you through till you get back to them. I always had the Cranberries with my other music with me on an iPod. I remember pacing around an Ecuadorian Marine Base of all places one summer, away my wife and daughter and listening to “Ode to My Family” again and again. And it’s just like, it was written specifically for you. Something she did to comfort just you. When she died, I was retired from the military by then but all those times I leaned on her music just came back to me like a flood. I listened to their albums most of that day in my studio working and it was admittedly, hard for this old war horse to keep back tears. So advice I guess, try not to get all eyeroll when you do see a fans reaction to an artist passing. I know I’m a little more understanding in that regard now. Great, great tribute, Adam.

The song "linger" became a part of my life. A then friend turned me on to it while I was tearing my drum set down in a bar where she worked. The bar was empty except for me and her when she played linger on the jukebox. After hearing it, I asked her the name of the song and who played it. Then I put a few dollars in the jukebox and must have listened to it a half a dozen times at least. Later on in life, this song became her song to me. As fate would have it, we became a couple. As it turned out, that night in the bar when I played linger so many times back to back on the jukebox, was the second time that weekend that at pleasantly surprised her. Because in the beginning of that weekend, I was a musician that went in to play with other musicians for a benefit to bury a lost friend. As musicians started jamming on stage I was still assembling my drum kit. She was serving beers at the bar. When I finished assembling my drum kit I joined in on the jam. When she heard the drums come in she turned around while holding a tray with beer bottles on it. And when she saw and heard me play, she literally dropped the tray. That was the first time I surprised her. The second time was that Sunday night tearing my kit down. Liking that song as much as I did really surprised her. Sadly, in December of 2013 I lost her to cancer. To this day, when I hear the song linger, it brings a tear to my eye.

I had the immense pleasure of working for The Cranberries record/distribution company in the 90's. One of the most special nights of my career was spent with them in a sweaty basement bar in St. Louis MO. Cicero's held less than 500 people, probably closer to 250-300. The first record was just starting to get some traction at alternative radio and St. Louis was a break-out market. A second show was added due to demand and Delores asked me to find her some hot tea between shows. We all witnessed an unforgettable night together jammed in that tiny space. When I heard she died, my mind immediately went back to that night as I dug out my b/s laminate from that tour and held it for a while. I remember her as being very pleasant, quiet and small, tiny actually. Not just short at 5'3" but small boned I guess lol. But what a voice! Going from a basement bar to head lining around the world is what it's all about. What a joy to see that happen because it doesn't always work out that way. She would not remember me if I came up to her and said, 'hey remember me' but I will never forget her. Thanks for this Professor of Rock.

Its a traditional style of singing in Ireland. The Irish actually invented rhyming, they introduced it to Latin, the Romance languages and English. Like there are no rhymes before the Irish introduced them. In the Irish language rhyming was important way to pass on history. They made all their history rhyme and when someone died, they would sing in a style called Keening, to keen you have to be ethereal, beautiful, and powerful. Delores used to keen at funerals and wakes from a young ages. Here is an example that would have been heard being sung as their children died due to food being witheld during the genocide. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXfXlGp_arWpec0

When Linger came out I was 17 & thought I was in love with a friend of mine. He rejected me none too lightly & i thought it was the end of the world. I'd hear Linger & think my heart would break. "I told you I loved you. I thought nothing could go wrong, but i was wrong, i was wrong..." Our friendship was never the same & although it ended badly at least i know now I dodged a bullet! There were red flags but i was too naive to see them at the time. I'm glad to hear the story of the song. It amazes me that someone as pretty as Delores would be rejected by a guy. I remember that I liked this song when I heard it on the radio in the 90's. I recently watched a reaction to Linger and something clicked in my head and I can't stop listening to it over and over. This was 3 days ago and I have listened to it a couple dozen times. Interesting that this was the first song she wrote with the Cranberries. It is a haunting masterpiece and 36 seconds in when the strings start playing and Dolores O'Riordan's voice comes in I get goosebumps every time. Thank You Professor!

Fabulous tribute to Delores. I remember seeing her with the band, waiting for a flight in Shannon Airport in the mid 1990s, probably for a tour in the US. She was a phenomenal singer. She had a knack of singing in a way that made it sound like two voices were harmonising.

Cranberries are amazing. They played 2 Philadelphia shows back on August 17th & 18th 1999 Me & my best friend since we were 6 years old and he was 2 days older than me, who passed a couple of years ago, found out about the show the day of. We couldn't get tickets, so we went down and partied in the parking lot & even though we were outside, we could hear the music & that amazing voice perfectly. It was an amazing show. We had a ball walking around the lot, puffing & doing balloons. We ended up hanging with these Dudes that were selling the balloons & they kept just handing them over. My Homie passed out as you do when doing too many balloons, and the dude we met jumped over him to help him & make sure he was ok. Me knowing my Homie like i did knew that when he came to & this Dude he didn't really know was over him, he was going to assume they fought and he probably got dropped so i was pulling Dude away from him trying to tell him, he wasn't understanding fast enough, so I'm trying to drag the Dude away to save his life, lol. Right on que my Boy opens his eyes, realizing he's on the ground and I'm pulling the other Dude off him, he jumps up starts swinging on the Dude, I'm yelling i told you, but i bear hugged my man and yelled you fished out, he's trying to help you. He at 1st didn't believe me and was like wtf, i had to scream at him if Dude hit you, believe me, I'd have slumped him, he's trying to help you. Then he realized i was probably telling him the truth so he chilled out. All these dudes that were there that we met and were hanging with were like yous are some crazy @$$ wild Dudes. LOL Crazy Times. 20 years old wild @$$ kids. They were probably looking at us pretty suspect after all that but we ended up staying there all night with no other incidents. Great Show, and another awesome memory with my Brother. R.I.P. ToyBoy.

I absolutely love the Cranberries. As I recall, I first started hearing the Cranberries around 1993 or 94 or so. I always thought the music was beautiful but at the time I was still hung up on the old school stuff of Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, etc... so in my early 20s I truly failed to appreciate this phenomenal force of Dolores O'Riordan and the Cranberries. I've made up for that past error, and seemingly not two days pass now without listening to Linger, Ode to my Family or Zombie. A few months ago I shared a thought with a friend about how impactful I felt the death of Dolores. I could not and still cannot describe it, but I knew that in a world full of so much ugliness and misery, that something beautiful was removed on that day in January of 2018. My buddy listened and agreed. Cool! I'm not alone. Thank you for this wonderful video today.

I remember hearing Linger for the first time and was blown away by the richness that whaled through what seemed to be melodramatic pipes reminiscent of Phil Spector's Wall of Sound productions, but with a character and clarity that seemed near impossible as it reverberated through my Pioneer System in spectacular stereophonic symphony. O'Reardon is a lost treasure for all times. Thank goodness her voice has been preserved.

The Cranberries were my favorite band from the moment I first heard Dreams. The first two albums were constantly on repeat in my dorm room. Dolores' voice touched my soul. It was strong and powerful but also so vulnerable. She was the embodiment of all those feelings you felt in your late teen and early twenties but didn't know how to express. I had the good fortune to see them on tour twice. One of the Live CDs i bought later was from one of those concerts in Detroit in the mid 90's. Dolores was also my first female musician crush. Setting off a long life of beautiful voices along the way. Thanks so much for featuring this group and this song, It still haunts me to this day, and Dolores' passing makes it hurt just a little bit more. It is timeless to me.

The Cranberries with her at the front provided a big part of the soundtrack to my life in my early to mid 20’s in the 90’s. When I first got to my duty station in Germany and walked into my unit’s favorite bar, the first song I heard playing was “Zombie”. She had SUCH an amazing voice, and if you haven’t already heard her covering Fleetwood Mac’s “Go your own way”, you’re missing out! Such a waste when she passed, and in such a needless way. 😢

On holiday in Limerick in '91 I was told about this band, but there was not a gig that week. A couple years later I still remembered their name and was able to catch them at Tip's in New Orleans, opening for The The. They were amazing and Delores voice just goes through you in the best way. Plus I got to talk to them after the set and they were the nicest people, especially Delores. I told her about being in Limerick and she was hanging on my every word. She truly made my evening.

I remember having the song described to me by a friend who was a big fan of alternative rock. I was a club disc jockey, someone who wanted a song with a beat, regardless of the words. The song spoke to me. Her raspy Irish voice and ability to convey true emotion in her music was something I had never heard, before or since. Rest in Peace, Delores, you have made your mark in music history.

Thank you for this video. I was in college in the early 90s, and was one of those people who bought into The Cranberries very early. I spent the 90s listening to U2, The Cranberries, The Cors, Enya, and others. I clearly have an Irish band addiction, but there’s no rehab for it. I did not know the circumstances surrounding Delores’ death. It seems that fantastically talented female singers shouldn’t mix alcohol and bathtubs. It seems to take them way too early.

I "AM" a huge fan of "The Cranberries", I have all of their albums, singles, b-sides and rare songs. I went to see the in concert every chance I could. They were simply "AMAZING" live. I was instantly in love with Dolores when I first herd her voice, and even more when I saw what she looked like. She actually blew me a kiss from the stage at one of their concerts, as I was front and center at the edge of the stage. . . Fergal Lawler (the drummer), walked right to me after the main set and gave me one of his drumsticks. I also went to see Dolores when she toured on her own/solo. I cried a few times that week when she died. The Cranberries and Dolores O'Riordan's albums are one of my most treasured album collections, along with my Smiths and Morrissey albums collection. Thank You for doing a video on them!!
