The Snowspeeder scenes from Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes back are some of the most iconic in movie history. Watching it maneuver about as it search for Han and Luke, or fought the Imperial AT-AT Walkers, was such great fun!
Bandai has wonderfully recaptured all of the details seen in the movie in this great 1/48 scale plastic model kit. This series will go through the building, painting, and weathering of this amazing little kit.
Part 3 details the weathering process, including panel lining, chipping, adding streaks and stains, and generally making the model look well worn.
Part 1: Painting The Cockpit • Bandai's 1/48 Star War...
Part 2: Assembly And Painting • Bandai's 1/48 Star War...
Part 3: Weathering and FINISH! • Bandai's 1/48 Star War...

That is so awesome to hear - thank you Nico! I am so glad that I was able to be helpful in your hobby fun. It truly is encouraging to me to read your kind comments. There is a lot to catch up on for sure. When I got back into the hobby in 2006, I was stunned at how much there was beyond what I'd done as a kid. Thankfully there are so many resources available on the web and in print to help us along. Be sure and check out my other videos too - you may find other information that can be helpful. So no clear coats to seal the different layers of weathering, or matte/semi gloss coat at the end to seal everything in?
@JonBius
@JonBius 3 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the amount of drying time between layers, what type of finish you're going for, and how much the model may be potentially handled. More and more I am preferring to do fewer clear coats, and in some cases, none at all. I've seen Mig Jimenez suggest that in several of his talks. The more I build, the more it makes sense to me. Take a look at this video I did earlier in the year. While it's aimed at Gunpla builders, the general principles apply across the board. (kzbin.info/www/bejne/mquWeItohraEmsk) Most of the time now I only do a clear coat when a lot of decals are needed, I want a really clean finish and the washes will benefit from it, or if I want the final finish to be a particular type. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting!

This video going to inspire me to build the snowspeeder. Regarding the snow base, did you paint the base white first follow by shading of grey colour?
@JonBius
@JonBius Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! It's been so long now I don't recall. If I did it now, I'd probably do light gray first, white drybrush, mid gray shade, and then a final white drybrush done very lightly to pop the highlights. I hope that helps! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Hello, I see that you are using odorless thinner, I thought that this kind of plastic reacts very poorly with it, does it not ? I had a bad experience with the x wing from revell and white spirits (the model pretty much crumbled). Is there something I am missing ?
@JonBius
@JonBius 8 ай бұрын
There are a lot of factors that go into it. The key is to prime the piece well, and make sure the thinners don't pool into areas were they can't quickly evaporate. Also, some thinners are "hotter' than others. Humbrol and Tamiya enamel thinners tend to be very hot, as to some brands of white spirits. I've found that Ammo of Mig/AK Interactive odorless thinner do nicely, but my favorite is artist odorless thinner, which seems to be the "softest". Keeping the application controlled and not allowing it to pool in joins where there is bare plastic has worked very nicely for me. HTH - thanks for watching and commenting!
@McSimouss
@McSimouss 8 ай бұрын
@@JonBius thanks for the answer. I didn't prime / varnish the model before applying, and used hardware store white spirits, that might explain it. Never had any issues with games workshop plastic, so imagine my surprise ! I'll try again with a different thinner and after a coat of varnish. Thanks a lot ! I always thought that models like this were begging for a quick oil shade.

I absolutely love your work but a bit of constructive criticism I think your painting your models like standard military vehicles ie when you paint the lasers I can't imagine the lasers getting Sooty the lasers would need to be clean to work better and obviously they would not smokey or sooty

Actually that's something I do think about, but in most instances I choose to go against logic on something like that, and try to achieve effects that "sell" the notion to the brain. We know that those are the pew-pew shooty things :), but I think our brain wants to see some evidence of that regardless of whether the real world aspect of it says no. So in some areas I choose to take a more "impressionist" approach to it to convey a notion, rather than a realism approach. Also, I often will use different approaches to weathering on each model... some being more rooted in scifi, some more realistic, some a blend. The main goal is to induce a suspension of disbelief, and convey a story for the piece as a whole.

I wish they would use a unified scale for SW kits 💩💩💩💩 1/121 Vader Tie Fighter 1/112 X-Wing Fighter These kits seem to be made to fit a box scale. The box is 8x6x2 inches so its 1/25 R2D2 or a 1/102 Speeder or a 1/121 Tie Fighter. It's always put me off SW kits.
