What techniques do you use when taking landscape photos?

Personally, in the past when it came to landscape photography, I found myself really dissatisfied with aspect ratios like 3:2 and 4:3 because I felt they didn't really capture the wide, epic scope and majesty of what I was seeing in front of me. Everything kinda felt smooshed together in the frame. It wasn't really until last month while at Ramon Crater when I re-framed certain shots into a 21:9 aspect ratio that I finally felt like I was properly conveying all of that.

I noticed that a lot of your shots in this video have a really high shutter with a pretty open aperture and a high ISO. Can you give input on the high shutter speed? I get if your handheld with a long lens but not a 24-70.

Settings really vary between scenarios. If you tell me which images you're talking about I'd be happy to discuss why the settings are the way they are, but I think the highest ISO I'm seeing here is 400 which is very low still.

@@Nateinthewild At the 4:45 mark. Tetons pic was shot at F5.6, 1/2500 and ISO 100. Is the 1/2500 due to the more open 5.6 or ? I usually shoot at 8 or 11 but my shutter speed is never that high. Just trying to get better and understand. A lot of your pictures seem to be like this.

@@Nateinthewild Sorry for the stupid question. I started thinking about it and you probably were shooting handheld with a long lens, DUHHHHH.

@@robryan4272 Oh sorry man, I missed your last response. No stupid questions, we're all here to learn! But you are correct, I was shooting handheld on the 100-400, so f/5.6 is wide open and since the ISO was already 100 I might as well shoot with a faster shutter. Shooting everything at F/8 or higher is a legacy technique, but modern lenses are so good that you really don't need to do that anymore.

What a Pro, didn't Sony teach him how to use a lens hood? This is so embarrassing ...
@American54 Жыл бұрын
Don’t need a lens hood all the time Mr Pro😡
@Nateinthewild Жыл бұрын
Lens hoods are only effective to reduce lens flare in direct sunlight and to reduce precipitation on the front element. Since none of these shots were facing the sun, nor in inclement weather, a lens hood would not have been effective in any way, nor would it have improved the images. Hope this helps!
