Holy f'n sh*t! Thank you so much for the Dust Bolt recommendation!!! It's so good. I'm checking out the first record right now. I'm a HUGE fan of the Thrash revival. I thought Warbringer's "Worlds Torn Asunder" was one of the best Thrash records I've heard in some time. This band is right there in that same wheelhouse. Although currently , they seemed to have taken different paths musically.
@thrallsofmetal3 ай бұрын
Necrotic Nick- Hey! Not a problem, man! I strongly recommend their first 3 for just some flat out, blistering thrash metal. They definitely share a lot of similarities with Warbringer sure too. Dust Bolt's last 2 I'd say approach them knowing that they sound quite different... and at least for me not in a good way.

Kreator for the better in my opinion. I love their first era (the first 5 albums), only really like Cause for Conflict from their middle era but my favorite is definitely the newest era.🤘🏻 As for Amorphis, I like all their albums but especially the new-ish era with Tomi Jutson as vocalist so they have changed for the better for me personally, though I still love their first 6 albums as well.🤘🏻
@thrallsofmetal3 ай бұрын
Necrotic Nick- I think the new era is good but I just doesn't pack the same vicious punch as the older stuff. It feels like it's soaring too much searching for epic hooks rather than nasty thrash riffs. Amorphis is a tough one because there's quality in every era of the band. I would still say they're more consistent now though with Tomi on vocals.

Kreator’s best era for me is Terrible Certainty - Coma Of Souls. The current era started out great but it didn’t take long for them to run out of ideas. Basically Kreator’s discography ever since their return to form pretty much consists of Violent Revolution, Enemy Of God, Enemy Of God II, Enemy Of God III, Enemy Of God IV, etc

Enjoy pieces of all of their discography. Helheim and Einherjer (both from Norway) are the two I try and keep up with though. Love everything they've done. Building my collection with those two. I love Kreator, but am I a bad fan if I love Renewal? It's such an interesting album. It really threw me for a loop when it came out. It did take me a while to get used to. And really enjoy Cause For Conflict, especially songs like Catholic Despot. The way it's mixed, it sounds like Mille is right in your ear. Funnily enough, I saw the band early this year, and Mille was being very specific and exacting in his instructions for the crowd, e.g. which segment of the crowd should sing what and when, and how to divide up and when to do a circle pit etc. And if we didn't sing or perform to his precise expectation, he would scold us, and we would believe it. He even tried to pit different parts of the crowd against others with his scolding. I don't think I was alone in feeling a little bit like a admonished and scolded school kid who disappointed the teacher no matter what I did. Lol It was hilarious.

I think they all have later periods that are different in their own way.

Damn, shame Nick isn’t a big fan of the Viking metal stuff from Bathory. I personally really really enjoy that era of bathory. I think the switch was a really good thing for him because he was able to get more creative with his song writing and he was an incredible musician. Plus Quorthon was ruining his vocals with how he was doing vocals on the black metal albums so we might’ve not have gotten any more music if he continued and couldn’t sing anymore.
@thrallsofmetal3 ай бұрын
Necrotic Nick- I wasn't for a lack of trying. I just can't get into the vocals and I miss that black metal viciousness they had on the earlier albums but I get people liking one era more than another with this band since they're so distinctly different. Enslaved have consistently changed their sound from album to album. An example of a band that goes beyond conventions and never seems to plateau, so to speak. They never seem to run out of creativity despite the few last records feeling more familiar and predictable. Don't get me wrong, they are still great albums. Enslaved could easily surprise us on their next record. Same thing for Cattle Decapitation: consistency is a keyword to describe them as well. And Arch Enemy... how the mighty have fallen. Ever since Alessa took over, I don't know. Not the same flavor. Tomb Mold have made a giant evolutionary leap on their last record. It's incredible. I still love their "old" sound, but it still remains grounded and rich death metal in my opinion. P.S. Another band we could add on there is Wayfarer. Even though it's subtle, you can still hear a change in their sound from their debut to now.
@thrallsofmetal3 ай бұрын
Necrotic Nick- Agreed on Enslaved. Pretty much every album feels like an incremental progression from the one before it in a way. The band must live near a well of endless creativity because I'm still impressed with their songwriting and their sound remaining 100% their own. Yeah, Arch Enemy seem to have hit cruise control on a very bland era of their sound. It's to the point where I feel like they just make albums so they have a reason to tour. I love everything by Tomb Mold so it's hard for me to say they got better but I'd argue that as musicians they improved so it's a bit more blurry there. I need to jam more of Wayfarer's stuff honestly as I've only really listened to their last 2 which I loved.

I want to share my opinion about KREATOR sound. This what happened between masterpiece called "Coma of souls" and "Renewal" was really too much for many fans. I can compare this situation to PARADISE LOST and their transformation between "Draconian times" and "One secod". I love all four mentioned albums, but in both cases this transformation was... I don't know - it would be better to change band name or have a "solo project" or something. BUT (Nick's favorite word :) For me "Cause for conflict" was amazing album with YES ! amazing sound. It has a little bit industrial taste (just like "Odium" by MORGOTH), but it was so RAW. So "primitive". So "not-over produced". Dirty, simple modern thrash metal sound. For me "Cause" is second, next to "Coma" favorite album from KREATOR. "Cause for conflict" was a hope for returning to thrash roots, and for this reason I never understand why "Outcast" and "Endorama" were so ... commercial. One more thing - im my opinion logical transformation would be if "Cause for conflict" would be released just after "Coma of souls", and then "Renewal" as a sign of beginning of big transformation, leading to "Outcast". So, I will never agree that "Renewal" = "Cause for conflict" as symbol of band leaving their thrash roots. "Cause for conflict" is amazing, powerfull, raw album ! Howgh !

Hold Me Up and Superstar Carwash by Goo Goo Dolls (the two preceding Boy Named Goo) are really great The Replacements/Husker Du-esque rock albums. I'm a huge fan of 80s punk and hardcore, but I honestly just don't think they were that good of a punk band.
@jasonboardman27963 ай бұрын
I agree with you I have a special place of my heart when they strip away with the angry punk music. And yeah I'm still kinda butt hurt about that part of the video really but fine to each their own I guess😆😆

Necrotic Nick- I really didn't go much beyond the debut and Jed but I know for sure I liked them a hell of a lot more than Boy Named Goo and onward. I love punk and hardcore and those first 2 were pretty solid and even occasionally had some crossover thrash moments.

I think in terms of the bands in the thumbnail, Amorphis, Enslaved, Arch Enemy, Cattle Decap and Job For a Cowboy all got better, particularly Amorphis and Enslaved. Kreator got much worse in the 90s but became killer again, and I'm neutral on Bathory and Tomb Mold I'm so fucking glad you brought up Dust Bolt though, I forgot about them for a hot minute, their first 3 albums are great but my god they fell off! Nick, you mentioned the newer thrash bands who were once great but abandoned thrash. The one that made me angriest was Lost Society with their newest album. Granted they kind of began to move away from the thrash by their third album, but what they were doing by then was still pretty solid. I even really like most of No Absolution, but holy fucking shit their newest album is one of the biggest piles of shit I've ever heard. Generic metalcore(ish) riffs with really cringey Linkin Park-esque choruses. It's even more egregious when you remember how good Fast Loud Death and Terror Hungry were! 🤣

Pretty decent takes, but Hammerheart is an amazing album, and I'm not a fan of the later stuff or viking metal. Epic AF.

Lost Society kinda got worse. Even though I like No Absolution (Blood On Your Hands is an absolute banger!), If The Sky Came Down made me think Linkin Park might wanna call their lawyers. So disappointing.

Necrotic Nick- Yeah, that one's on the list and spoiler alert I was not a fan of the change for pretty much the same reasons. Loved their earlier material though.
@lawrencefine50203 ай бұрын
I liked the first Bathory album, but I think they got worse. Gone were the blast beats and pure evil of the first album. They got worse. For me, Hellhammer was the first Black Metal band they inspired thousands of Black Metal, and Thrash Metal. Hellhammer even inspired another band to name themselves after a Hellhammer SONGS. THAT'S INSPIRATION. I think the big fat elephant in the room is Metallica. And that's all I'll say about that.
@thrallsofmetal3 ай бұрын
Necrotic Nick- Man, I love that debut but I think the peak was Under the Sign of the Black Mark. That album is simply amazing but I still love the raw, sleezy evil that the debut brings. I can see the argument with Hell Hammer being the first black metal act though. Hell, I'd put them up there with the first metal bands that could've been called "extreme metal". We covered that elephant in the first one. There was no way we were going to miss that one.

Amorphis is sooooooo fucking good. Definitely better. Arch Enemy was fantastic with Angela. Now? Mehhhhh... Nailed it, Alissa isn't the issue... it's Michael Amott plateau-ing. Let's not forget, AE lost Chris Amott with Angela, and tbh, I think Chris is the more creative mind of the brothers.
@thrallsofmetal3 ай бұрын
Necrotic Nick- I'm a long time Amorphis fan and minus Far From the Sun I dig pretty much everything they've released. The Angela years were pretty solid but yeah, I just can't get into much of the Alissa material despite her being a solid vocalist. The music is just flat and predictable at this point. I think Chris and Michael have a tense relationship and I've heard that Chris can be hard to work with. His stays with bands seem to be short here lately.

@@thrallsofmetal Nick yes for sure!! He was only with Dark Tranquillity for a short time, which is a damn shame because I really like his playing. Him & Bill Steer are my 2 favourite guitarists in metal.

Musically I liked the change in Bathory, but vocally Quorthon can not sing....at all. I'm with you, I loved Arch Enemy through those first 4 albums with Angela, but by Kaos Legions they lost me. Every fucking song felt like they were about inspiring teenagers to rise up. I just couldn't relate. And I started to hate that the entire band dressed like they were a nascar pit crew. I agree on 90's Kreator...pass. However I still like their new stuff. Gods of Violence might be my favorite Kreator album since Coma of Souls. I enjoy newer Kreator more then newer stuff from Exodus, Megadeth, Death Angel, or Testament. If you do a part 3 you have to do Voivod, C.O.C., Satyricon. There are the Black Metal purist who hate everything Satyricon did after Vanity Nemesis. Fuck the haters, I love the song King. When I heard it on a Brave Words Bloody Knuckles sampler, I played that song on repeat on that sampler. I love all eras of Satyicon. They were 100% my gateway band into second wave Black Metal. Suicidal Tendencies, while I still enjoy them, really went worse starting with Age of Rebellion.
@simplebutnotsolongname66422 ай бұрын
Dunno about Quorthon not being able to sing. I definitely think he improved overtime, especially when you get into his solo stuff. Deep from his Purity of Essence album definitely showcased the growth and playing to his strengths vocally and Songwriting-wise.

If Six Feet Under is the "Chris Barnes Band," Arch Enemy is the "Michael Amott Band." I hate how Michael has taken the roots of the band and literally just allows complete boring, stock songwriting be integrated in what used to be a kickass band. Alissa has always been a great vocalist, nun wrong with that. The lyrics are dumb as hell, but vocals are great. Michael is just this lazy riff man that doesn't like to go beyond his playability. He became the Lars Ulrich of Arch Enemy. I'll just say it, Michael Amott sucks.
