The only time I saw my dad cry was to this song. He was a Green Beret and was away when a young man in our church was killed by a land mine in Vietnam. My dad was asked to bring his body home. My dad was standing in the aisle of the church with the casket behind him. My grandpa was the pastor of the church. My family was seated in the balcony. He was standing there in his dress uniform larger than life itself. He tried but he couldn’t hold back the tears. I’m guessing he felt some guilt. My dad did four tours in Southeast Asia, cracked two vertebrae in his neck and fractured his skull in a parachuting accident and lived to see another day. The soldier was there for four months and didn’t survive. He also joined the Army because of my dad. I learned that day my dad was a human being. He was still my hero then and now. He’s been gone five years. I miss him but I find strength in knowing that I will one day see him again. I couldn’t listen to the song without crying until he passed away. I know that when he passed that burden he carried had been lifted away by God’s mercy.

Jude -- You correctly quoted the original lyrics. Note, however, that the Mormon Tabernacle Choir (now called The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square) uses different words: "As He died to make men holy, let us LIVE to make men free." The change in wording is not meant as a slight to those who've made the ultimate sacrifice in the cause of freedom; rather, it's a call to the rest of us to live our lives in a manner that preserves, protects, and enhances the freedom of those around us.

One correction. This is not a "professional" choir. Each and every one of these great singers is an unpaid volunteer. They take their own time to rehearse and when they travel, they pay their own way. That is one of the amazing thngs about "America's Choir". And today it is hard to believe, but the 1954 recording of this song by this choir was the at the top of the Charts. Yes, the Battle Hymn of the Republic!!! That wouldn't happen today. Sad to say.

When we sang the hymns, she was outstanding, such a beautiful voice, such clarity, but not over shadowing anyone. I enjoy singing and don't need a bucket to carry a tune, but I shut up so I could just listen to her singing. 😊 After the service I found out she was a member of the Tabernacle Choir and just happened to be in town visiting her daughter that weekend. I mean the whole 1800s were extremely rooted in conservative Victorian ideals which are heavily influenced by the bible since it was one of the few books that people had access to. This song reflects more of the time, and the war, not just religion.

@@gopherfan118 Yes. The last line has been re-written for our times (and the MTC used the new line, not the original.) The original line went: "As He died to make men holy, let us die to make them free. Our God is marching on." Now we've changed it to "let us live to make men free" a thoroughly modern and not Victorian concept of war. Oh, and the word "Glory" in the refrain meant "heaven" or "salvation" not just "honors" as we use that word today. So the original song is of soldiers longing to die for Jesus and go directly to heaven in the effort to make men free. Very Victorian and not modern at all.

My parents brought their children up Christian. Mom loved and cherished all holidays but Christmas had a special place in her heart. Every year she would dust off the albums that she felt best embodied the spirit of this holy day. The number one album was of course the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The next best was Neil Diamond’s album “Christmas Songs”. Neil’s vocals always managed to light-up, on Christmas day, his gritty soul and flair for nuance. So, to the Tabernacle Choir and Neil Diamond, my extended family salutes you for providing spirituality and joy within our hearts.
