Extremely RARE footage of the Power Station rehearsal in 1997. Robert Palmer gave me permission to shoot their extremely short sound check at the Super Club in New York City. I will be re-editing to include the second camera angle... coming soon!

Cool clip. That first album is absolutely killer. One of my top 80's albums that i still listen to all the time. Tony was a big influence on me as a drummer too because of this album. The drums sound so cool. Love all the effects also. Wish these guys made a followup sooner. Imagine "Addicted to Love" was their's on a 2nd album made right after... That band would have been a giant band instead of a cool "One off" side project.

Robert opted out of touring in favor of recording his Riptide album. I don't think any of the guys expected The Power Station to take off like it did. After the 85 tour, Live Aid, and their Miami Vice appearance, they went their separate ways. John went back to Duran Duran, Andy left Duran Duran to focus on his solo career, Tony went back to session performing, and Michael focused on his acting and solo music career.

I was at this concert at The Supper Club .... Funny story : I cried to everybody who i thought could be working for the band to help me to meet Andy , my hero when i was a teen... They got so sick of me after a while , that told me, if i stick around after the show, somebody who worked for the production, would take me -- but only me , 'cos i was with my girlfriend --- to Andy at the after party .. for 5 minutes max....! ok ! Of course , i never believed for a second that would happen , but to my surprise , right after the show the guy came back for me... So , we went upstairs and i shook hands with the man himself ...there was a party going on .. made some pictures... Chatted for a minute or so ... Told him i was impressed with his guitar playing ...in turn he told me he was impressed with my leather pants.. ha ha ... and just when i started to think we are best pals, and wanted to ask about ten thousand questions , the guy who made it happen all...gently started to push me toward the exit , i guess i wore out my welcome.... Andy was a class act .... Loved him before , loved him then , will love him always ....

@@BarrySlisk Ya, I think I worded that whole comment terribly! I just didnt want to sound negative or disrespectful towards Andy Taylor in anyway. In his more recent tours he has a new singer and they do songs like Addicted To Love (in honor of Robert) and Bang A Gong of course. And in fact during Power Stations first and only 'world' tour around 1986, Robert was not the lead singer and I really didnt like the vocal style of the singer they used. There is lots of footage of them with that singer on youtube. Mostly I am expressing my frustration that I cant find any video footage what so ever of Robert Palmer singing Bang A Gong, let alone any Power Station songs live other than TV appearences. I would LOVE to see some live footage of a Power Station concert with Robert Palmer singing! Its a sadly and badly missing piece of rock and roll history!

@@BarrySlisk Michael Des Barres is the name of the singer i was trying to remember. He did the 1985 Tour. He also sung the Power Station song from the Commando Sound Track and according to Wiki he also sung on a Power Station Reunion Tour in 2019. Of course Andy was the only original Power Station member left for that tour as the other three original members have all died over the years.

John Taylor was most likely probably in rehab!.. As he didn't finish recording all of his bass lines for The Power Station album & Bernard Edward's was happy to fill in what John missed... At that time John & Andy were so out of control & while John decided to at least try & get off drugs, it didn't help as we have a legal drink called alcohol & (again) both John & Andy were for most of the time, out of their skulls... You can see this in the short making of video/documentary that documented the recording process when doing The Power Station album... Andy plays his solo for " Get It On - Bang A Gong " & most of his guitar work while actually in the Producers Room & he played his solo while he was let's say, 3 Sheets To The Wind... John had tried coping with his addictive nature but if being 100% honest he was not whole hearted & serious about quitting, as both John & Andy needed booze & drugs just to get through the day... I've been in 2 professional band's & people think it's all fun & game's & women falling all over themselves to get to you, well most parts of that is true, but they rarely tell you of how long they've been awake & constantly going from one gig to another, all the while doing TV & Radio Interviews at the same time but what really does you in & harms you the most is your body clock... That's why many musicians got hooked on uppers & downers, as they needed drugs to help them sleep & uppers to get them going again & that lifestyle catches up with you no matter who you are... You could be playing the USA & in one city & then go to the next & your body clock is out of sink with the actual time you got up & in many cases you'd arrive in a country the day before you left because of the difference in time zones... It's amazing that there wasn't even more fatalities in the music industry... Sure the movie industry can be rough but alot of the time actor's spend most of their time in down time waiting around being generally bored & wanting to play your scene, but not in the music business & that's why it was known as the most brutal of the artistic arts as Manager's/Promoters et al couldn't care less about the act they managed & it was about how much they could/can squeeze out of any particular solo act or band financially, before they imploded... Thankfully John has managed to keep his demons at bay & the last i heard he was still teetotal... You need to take into consideration that John & Andy signed up for the life of rock star's but being in a group like Duran Duran which had its fair share of partying, as there were no angels in that group, & when your young & have all of these vices of booze drugs & women served up to you, all the while burning the candle at both ends, will in the end eventually take its toll on each individual in that band & then came the brief split or hiatus from Duran Duran... This gave them the opportunity to play more rock orientated music with elements of funk song's that they wouldn't otherwise do with Duran Duran... You just have to listen to the differences between the 2 Album's that they recorded while having a quick break... You have what John & Andy recorded which was the self titled rock orientated " The Power Station Album " Then there's Simon/Nick & Roger's more synth pop orientated album under their band name of Arcadia & the albums title of " So Red The Rose " to hear how & what John & Any brought to Duran Duran... I personally wasn't in any camp of the album for The Power Station was better than that of Arcadia's, as I liked both equally, but truth be known I'd lean towards The Power Station if I was pushed... That's why Duran Duran have endured & lasted for 4 decades as each member brings in different elements to their overall collective & they all work around each other & of course there is the fact that they've taken chances also, so they could always try to be different & some albums didn't do as well as others but again that's why they are still a relevant band in todays music scene as they are always willing to try something new & experiment, all the while working with different Producer's & collaborating with other solo acts or musicians so they can best deliver something different from their last album... With regards to the party lifestyle It was no secret that not long after the period of John & Andy recording The Power Station Album & Simon/Nick & Roger recorded the Arcardia album that Roger Taylor left as he was about to collapse from a nervous breakdown from sheer physical & mental exhaustion from year's of constantly being on the go & some people can deal with it better than others & some have to take a break or walk away & for Roger he hated the fact that at that point in his life he hated waking up every day & hating what he once loved doing as a profession & he was smart enough at a young age to walk away from it all, as at times it takes more courage to say No than it is to be subservient to the situation many of those in the profession of music/acting or even any kind of certain sports... As we've all seen certain sporting legends who should've walked away at the top game & in as good a physical condition that they could be expected from their chosen profession only to stay on way too long & end up doing more harm to themselves physically & to their lasting legacy... Meanwhile John & Andy's way of dealing with this was drugs & booze, but the " Bill Is Always Due " when you live a lifestyle like that & if John & eventually Andy hadn't cleaned up their act they would be dead before they hit 30, as they were serious party animals & drugs/booze & women were a plenty & usually always for free... The Power Station was only meant to be a one off collaboration of John & Andy's respect & fondness for singer song writer Robert Palmer & they were big fans & had already worked with Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers as the Producer for their No 1 Hit in America " The Reflex " while with Duran Duran Duran... John & Andy already knew Bernard & Tony but they wanted Bernard to Produce rather than Nile as he was too busy Producing so many famous acts & Nile Rodgers is or was another casualty of drug abuse, but you'd find all that out about Nile Rodgers if you watched any documentary that's been made about him in the last 10 years as there's been a few documentaries... Or read his authorised autobiographical book " Le Freak: An Upside Down Story of Family, Disco, and Destiny " Nile was a Hit Making Machine & he still is to this day but his upbringing & his chosen profession ended up with him doing as his parents did & he to became a casualty of drugs but thankfully he to has come through the other side of that lifestyle & has lived to tell the tale... I hope that answered your question about JT & you should look up documentaries on Nile Rodgers who has now become a honoury member of Duran Duran & he's stated many times that the band " Chic " was akin to working with his brother of the same age or slightly older & playing with Duran Duran was like playing & writing songs with his younger brother's & he rates Duran Duran as one of thee Best bands to come out of the 80s & who have never went away, but have always been there, releasing 14 Studio Albums & that's not including the Live Concert's they recorded & released... In light of the coronavirus stay safe where ever you are in the world... .....

@@greatwhite61967 thank you for your reply. Yeah I did know most of what you said. I'm an OLD big fan. I've read their books. I was shocked & disappointed. I hate to admit. Reading all the things that happened while a cokehead. And his first wife & I are the same age. So that kinda made me say WTF I COULD HAVE MARRIED HIM!! He was my 1st love. lol. Andy was my 2nd favorite. For his non conformity at times. You could always tell he thought the music was too soft for him. I was sad when he left. I bet you have some Wild juicy good stories!!!!

@@ldybozz Unfortunately, I do have some stories... Some I wouldn't put on here as it's private & I don't kiss & tell... There were funny times/frustrating times/hilarious times/low times/high times & everything in between!.. The music industry isn't or wasn't for the faint hearted as it'll eat you up & spit you out & you have to stand your ground even if it means it's the end of the band, which is what came to pass... But I regret none if it, as most of the time I acted in the correct manner & never put myself in a position that could see someone try to use or say something about me that wasn't true... I think us bassists who also did backing vocals & co-writing, for me anyway, are the most grounded out of any type of genre of band & it's the lead guitarist & front man or women that you need to keep an eye on... Especially your front man or woman, as you have no show to put on If they're out of it & thankfully we could always perform... It's quite amazing when I look back at this footage & what I & many around me went through, that we actually played great music & next to nothing ended up on the cutting floor either in the studio or when playing Live... As much as I love & live music I think I'd advise someone to think very very carefully about what they're about to get themselves into, if they thought of entering the music industry & though artists have much more control there are still those who'd happily f*ck someone over & they'd not miss a nights sleep ... As much as it can be soul destroying there are those moments that you wish would never end & thats why a lot of singers & musicians go down the road of taking drugs as there is no high that can beat playing in front of an audience & when you come off stage your still going like crazy & you don't want it to stop... That's when casualties start piling up, as it starts of small but soon gets so out of hand you wonder how the hell did that happen... Chinese Whispers Syndrome is another issue thst can & does usuallu happen when in a band & I called it this bevacaise there were always hangers on just waiting to plant the seed in one of the members ears & before you know it your at each other's throats, and I mean that literally... As there were those that for the lack of a word/saying i called opportunistic leeches, that can't wait to somehow get their foot in the door & once in it's very difficult to get rid of someone that's only there for themselves & doesn't care that what they're saying or doing is not only ruining the band but also friendships that have been there since kids but thankfully & quite a few years later we were lucky to connect again & see it for what it was & that no lasting damage to our friendships was going to be the way we parted & never made amends... It doesn't matter that you tell someone in the band that the person whispering in your ear has their own agenda & they are being played, as no one likes to think they can be fooled but it happens every day in every business whether it's music or corporate taker overs... You should read the autobiography of the late great Mick Karn the bassist from 70s & 80s progressive band " Japan " & it tells you about his solo work & his many collaborations also... Read that & for me it was almost like looking in a mirror & I knew I wasn't the only one to go through this & that's the downside of being in a band as when it's good it's phenomenal but when it's bad, its heart breaking but many fans don't get to hear this... Well most of those from Mick Karn/Duran Duran won't get to know until decades later as my age group, as we were brought up to keep our privates lives, exactly that, Private... But you have these so called celebrities who only make it in show business for appearing in some stupid so called reality show & once that's over they'll sell their story to the highest bidder & to me that's just wrong on so many levels... In light of the coronavirus stay safe and healthy where ever you are in the world... All The Best... .....

@@northpolealaska Well done to you for finding a way to work in both industrys that just don't care about one's private life & they think that since your well known or work in an industry that craves media attention that you should be open to all sorts of intrusions or you should be a party animal & up for anything & everything as it's very easy to say Yes, we're as it takes smarts & guts to say No... Its a little harder to step back from that life style if your in the front line as your look down on if you don't want to party all the time & I was lucky to be very grounded by my late mother who told me to never forfeit my principles & be their for your family & friends & being in a band is an extension of your family & it can be very difficult to tell certain members " STOP Your Killing Yourself " But in the end they've got to want to do it & just be there for them when they need you & to me quitting & getting out definitely saved me from having to watch my friends kill themselves... l It's only recently that I've fallen back in love with music, the last 2 year's or so, & I'm glad as music has always been there for me & when i think about it ,music was & is my first love, but the industry & business sense side of it I was more than happy to walk away from & just live the way I wanted to & not what people thought I lived like... I wish you the best & as always Take Care & All The Best... In light of this coronavirus stay safe & healthy where ever you are in the world... Slaínte...

You don’t know how long they have been rehearsing and on top of what else was going on. Robert Palmer would have been 47 here, hardly old. He had health issues towards the end of his life. He may have been having the same issues by his mid-40’s. My father died of his first heart attack, the same kind as Palmer at 42. Afterwards my mother began remembering things that were clues he was having health issues but had dismissed it due to his age. His brother, my uncle, died the same way two years later at age 42. Both were physically fit. All three were heavy smokers. I wish people could learn from their mistakes. Diet, genetics, smoking and lack of exercise can all have serious consequences to your health.

I saw Robert and Tony before and after the rehearsal, they both seemed fine, but a bit rushed. The rehearsal was very short too... basically just a quick sound check

@@foodog777 Tough break, Mike. That's the way I feel. Just as I feel - no Andy - no Duran Duran. Not that a band can't continue or progress - or even be good or better. But when you lose a major component of a band - it's simply not the same. This is especilaly true of a band you've followed since their start. This is an opinion. So clueless it is not.
