Another stop on the Robin Williams train!
This movie was very fun, imaginative, and downright silly! It was super fun to watch Robin Williams go from big ol' business man who isn't the very best parent to, well, a child in adult form! As per usual, he played his role very well!
I hope you all enjoy this reaction!

Yeah, that score at that moment…always takes me back to the school classroom on a rainy afternoon where the film got put on for during the lunch break cos we couldn’t go outside, that instant feeling of childhood innocence… Similarly the music during the hand off of Peter choosing who to leave in charge, and that music swell as the kids run to hug their mother who is understandably in confused shock Side note from that combo of Spielberg and williams - as Peter is being take to neverland, the couple on the bridge who start to fly is George Lucas and I believe his wife…

also the ticking clock and the croc was also meant to represent hooks fear of death, representing age and time taking its toll on him. that’s why Hook remains in Neverland, becasue aging is slowed there even for adults like him.
@Yugioh420
@Yugioh420 3 жыл бұрын
@@mckenzie.latham91 it's not slowed. You dont age in Neverland. Only the amount of time you spend outside of Neverland accumulated to the age you grow. He was out killing other pirates and looking for Peter in the real world, I think that's why he got older anyway

@@Yugioh420 Well in this movie's universe adults like Hook may age. They never state when Hook and Peter's rivalry started but if we assume Hook was in his 20's when he arrived in neverland and I think Peter may have already have been there for a long time by that point so minus the roughly 20 years Peter was gone (he was 12 when he left and probably 30s by now) thats still a couple decades he could have fought Hook as a boy
@Yugioh420
@Yugioh420 3 жыл бұрын
@@digitaladventurer2142 hook was in Neverland before peter pan. It's all one universe and all of them so far anyway have all coincided with each other in one time line. Hook didn't start to age until he left Neverland, he even mentioned in this movie how he smashed a certain clock after he Gutted a notorious pirate and set his ship a blaze. How many pirates did you think there are in Neverland? He clearly was sailing the seven seas of the mortal world looking for pan. And while Peter aged 20 years or so putting him in his mid 30s hook who was already in his 30s if not 40s is now in his late 50s early 60s. Trust me I've seen every peter pan movie over a thousand times. Animated or None.
@DAMIENDMILLS
@DAMIENDMILLS 2 жыл бұрын
I love how they emphasized Hook's fear of a clock ⏰. Neverland is supposed to be a place where time stops. Nobody ages. Kids stay kids, adults don't die. They wrote it in a way where both kids and adults can relate. Kids don't wanna grow up, and adults don't wanna die. But for Hook, they made it so that a crocodile swallowed a clock amd now the ticking turns into Hook's fear of his life ending. Either being eaten alive or by time passing by, he is aging and dying naturally. I think that's a brilliant metaphor.

"I can't believe Rufio died!" Yeah, this one is way darker than the Disney version. Also, the Disney version leaves out some important bits from the original story to make it more child friendly, like when Tinkerbell (who is so small that she only has room for one feeling at a time, because that's how emotions work, I guess...lol!) Drinks poison to save Peter, or the quote, "To die would be an awfully big adventure," all of which are referenced in the movie. And I really like how they turned it around and said "To live would be an awfully big adventure." That's a really positive message to come out of this.

I'm also glad Peter's happy thoughts evolve as he gets older. Kids are easier to please, and have very little to worry about. So their happy thoughs are child-like wonder, simple things. But as an adult, Peter doesn't find happiness in a lot of things anymore. Adults are so stressed and depressed, that it takes more to make them happy. Peter has been sad for so long, he forgot why he left Neverland in the first place. Once he realized his family is more important than his career, he finally feels happy. His priorities are in order.

Watching this film and Good Morning Vietnam back to back really drives home how Williams was doing totally inverted roles in them. In Vietnam, he's a funny, goofy guy stuck in a serious situation, while in Hook, he's a an uptight, serious guy stuck in a weird, silly situation. Not every comedy actor can do both so well (another who's great at it is Steve Martin; just compare The Jerk and All of Me).

Odd as it may sound, Captain Hook was based on a real person. He was a minister in a small town who successfully hid that he had once been a prolific pirate, even though he had a prosthetic hook hand. He claimed he lost it in an accident, but it was cut off in a skirmish.

This movie gets way too much hate, even from Spielberg. There's just too much to like in it, and that everyone in it approaches the story and its implications about growing up and facing the stresses/traumas of the real world so sincerely is a pretty powerful thing, tbh. Not to mention the sequence where Peter remembers how to fly is honestly great.

*Fun Fact* : Steven Spielberg was going to cast Michael Jackson as Peter Pan in this film but MJ felt the whole point of Peter Pan was that you don't grow up and this version not only got older, but forgot his past, became a lawyer and basically put his kids on the back burner. And I'm glad it didn't work out because NO ONE could play this part like Robin!

There’s a lot of cool things that you don’t notice at first in the film. like when peter goes into the nursery and he sees the history of Wendy and her brothers going to Neverland painted on the walls, as well as the hook latch for the window. when Tootles wakes up from Nanna 2’s barking you see wendy's brothers, michael and john's hat and teddy bear from the original journey to Neverland when they were kids, as well as the bottle Model of Hooks ship, the Jolly roger when Peter and wendy come home after hooks napped their kids, you see a long tear in the wall from the door, up the stairs to the nursery which was hook using his hook hand to leave a trail to lead Peter to the site of his children’s kidnapping and Hook's note When Maggie’s singing the song about not being alone, you see all the private transfixed but Hook, whose made uncomfortable by the song and leaves this is because Hook is incapable of love and fears dying alone, he cannot connect to the song because he’s so black hearted he’s incapable of understanding the love behind it, and not being alone. etc. etc.

Even tho I’m 11 months late and someone probably already explained that to you - Wendy is significantly older than Peter because Peter Pan always was the boy who’d never grow up. If you want to stay at Neverland you can’t grow up, ever! That’s Peter‘s rule. If you start to grow up you will have to leave. Wendy decided to grow up at the end of the original story (same for her brothers), so she aged on meanwhile Peter remained a 12 year old- ish boy. Now in this Maggie Smith aka grandma Wendy has said that Peter only decided to leave Neverland, and therefore to grow up when he saw Moira (his now wife) for the first time and fell in love with her. So at that point Wendy probably already was a grown woman. Since Peter Pan in the original story doesn’t have a mother because he fell out of his trolly as a little baby and became „lost“ (and therefor also forbid all of the other „lost boys“ to have one/ think of theirs - another one of his rules If you want to stay) Wendy decided to adopt him and raise him as like he was her own child. Another important thing worth mentioning is that If you stayed at Neverland but decided to return to your parents and to grow up you will loose your memories of Neverland and all the adventures you’ve encountered. They will fade away and soon will only feel like a distant dream you’ve once had when you were a child. Same goes for everyone who stays at Neverland for too long, being the reason why Jack in this starts forgetting about home. That’s why Peter doesn’t have his memories anymore, now that he’s all grown up. Wendy however is the excuse (big metaphor for the reason why that is exactly) and even tho her brothers forgot about Neverland and Peter Pan and their adventures- she never did. (probably because Wendy never actually chose to grow up and was more forced to but always remained a child at heart). Really recommend you to listen to/ read the original story which is actually quite scary If I’m being real honest. It’s kinda like a dark fairytale, meanwhile the Disney movie (even tho beautiful and amazing!!) is a lot less gloomy but more light hearted and sweet. I’d recommend both actually. ♥️🙋🏼‍♀️

I usually don't comment on videos that have been on KZbin for a significant amount of time, but what I have to say is worth the commenting. There is a story from the set of Hook that I thought you'd like to know. Steven Spielberg, at the same time as the filming of Hook, was producing a made-for-TV cartoon Christmas movie based on one of Berkeley Breathed's comic strip stories. The cartoon is called A Wish For Wings That Work, and in it Robin plays a manic depressive Kiwi in a flightless birds support group. How he got the role is the story. Berkeley Breathed came by the set of Hook to show Spielberg some storyboards, Robin was passing by, and seeing the storyboards proceeded to act out (in full Peter Pan costume) the kiwi role. He was offered the part right then, and his voice was recorded that night. Dustin Hoffman was given the role of a cockroach, who's single line, it is said, took him about four dozen attempts to get right.

12:18 "You are NOT...in Kansas anymore." Funny you say that because most of the movie was filmed in the same stages they shot The Wizard Of Oz back in the 30s. In fact you spoke that reference on the scene where the Croc clock is which is the exact spot where Dorthey said those lines. The Pirate Town was on the same stage as Munchkin Land and the Dock/Pirate Ship set was on the stage where they filmed The Emerald City. Most of Hook was shot at Sony Studios in LA, which was formally owed by MGM in the golden age of Hollywood.

would have probably been a little less confusing if you knew more about Peter Pan before. But there was enough exposition to get you thru it by the end. The 'ticking' was also part of Hooks fear. The crocodile that ate his hand had also swallowed a clock so whenever he heard ticking it was 'the crocodile' coming back to get him. A good reaction, its a fun movie trying to blend the real world with a classic child's story.
