Best video I've seen yet Bob, nice information. On a lot of new houses we strap and solder the pipes to the straps, but we always put an air camber above the T. It's something everyone should do, couldn't imagine not doing it.

We had noises when the washer would turn off and when we turned on the sprinklers for the season there was a constant loud noise. We put air back into the system ...turned everything back on and voila...no noises. Thanks so much.

I live in an early 1900s apartment with those old water heaters. This happens whenever the heat goes on and it sounds like someone working in the other apartment!!! And the utility room is right below me.

For your info draining the house does NOT refill the air chambers . When they become water logged they act just as if you dipped a straw into water then placed your finger on the top, when you bring the straw out the water stays in the straw. The cap on the ends acts like your finger on the straw so you are unable to break the vacuum even if you drain house. The proper thing to use would be a mechanical water hammer arrestor and this method does not need maintenance .

Thanks! I'll have to look for a slow close toilet valve.

Awesome.... that explains a lot... i was worried water was leaking

Huh, we have that noise when the toilet stops filling. I'll try draining the system (when I put in a whole house water filter) and see if that helps. Else I guess I can find the moving pipes and secure them. I guess I could also add a 'T' somewhere on the cold water line and add a vertical dead-end pipe.?.?.?

@wildman6911 No harm no foul! I never said this was the only cause or permanent solution to this problem.however seems like an obvious starting place and if it solves the problem, longer term than a few days, then its surly worth zero expense and little time and effort Thanks for watching and adding to the discussion! +++Bob

Hey Man yeah I have done it before as well I have also encountered that same problem in a house before and I found most times it does not solve the problem. Sometimes it would stop for a few days but then the same problem came up again . I am a plumber in ontario , Canada so we here are aloud to install air chambers but personally I am not a fan . Since a mechanical water hammer arrestor is not that costly I prefer them over air chambers . I Do like your video's , so don't take it the wrong way

thank you for sharing this video... I have a handyman who help me to remodel my bathroom. some how the handyman cut out the long pipe that was suppose to help with air the pressure. so from then on there is a loud banging sound every time we turn on and off the water, especially flushing the toilet. stupid me with no knowledge of plumbing. any suggestion would be helpful thanks.

Bob, i need your insight solving this detrimental problem i been experiencing. Recently i have my pipes replaced with coppers. Every time i turn on the hot water, i hear this banging noise through out the house. When i turn off the hot water, it doesn't stop. Occasionally you can still hear the banging. The noise only stop if you stop using hot water for over 30 mins or so. The guy who replaced our pipes kept thinking it the water pressure. I assure you it not. We shut our water supply to

@wildman6911 Hey wildman, the logic of what you said seems so obvious you had me doubting myself! I took a piece of copper waterline and did as you said in a container of water and every time I removed it from the water (keeping it vertical) the water trickled out. don't know if it has to do with diameter of pipe or what. Try it yourself and let me know if you agree. Thanks for making me think!+++Bob

Wow, this was the old method from long, long ago. I believe they are not allowed in New Installation. Should use Hammer-Arrestor, ones with piston.

Anything that shakes, rattles. and rolls has the potential of failing along with putting up with the noise, may not happen for a long time but why risk it when a potential solution is so easy to do? Let me know if you or your landlord give it a try untill the get some ear muffs and hope it doesnt get worse.+++Bob

I switched over to an on-demand hot water heater for my house. Now it has worked really well for me except the pipes started making a lot of banging as discussed here. I figure that the old fashioned tank probably contained a big unintended air reservoir in it which was gone from the system with the new heater - therefore there was no air to absorb the shock of sudden on/off valves. Solution is to do as the man here says - it worked only so-so for me though.

Will an air chamber drain? Or, will it retain water like a drinking straw sealed off with your finger and lifted out of a glass of water. Experiment. Put a 3/4" pipe in a bucket of water. As hard as you try to seal off the top of the pipe with your finger, the water will still drain out quickly when you lift your "air chamber" out of the bucket. So, yes the air chamber will drain and recharge with air if you can drain the water from your plumbing. I am more concerned with stagnant water and how long it takes for an air chamber to become waterlogged. I plan on installing a piece of clear tubing in my home plumbing to answer this question. Can't seem to find a video that shows this, just an animation from a commercial water hammer arrestor supplier.

Thx for the info. Just curious... Everything I search on this issue refers to when the water was turned on or utilized but our pipes randomly shake in the house when nothing is running and it is a new problem which is progressing for longer periods and occurring more frequently. Have you any opinion on this? Thx again.

Every time I see this type of work, it just pisses me off!! Bob is right, the capped pipe A.K.A. "Dumb ass Hammer Arrestor" will lose all air to be ineffective. The dumb asses that installed that pipe could of added that hammer instead of a long capped pipe!! It was a cost cutting measure. If it was me that ran into this, and I hope Bob did as well, would be to cut 12"-16" off that pipe an install a "REAL" device. 15 minutes of added work!!
