Southeast Asia is one of the most exciting regions in the world, with its cultural diversity and modern infrastructure setup. It’s no wonder this part of the world is gathering continuous interest from people all over the world to work and live there.
In particular, these 3 cities stand out - Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. 3 cities in 3 different countries, within close proximity to each other.
In today’s video, we will highlight why these 3 cities, with many commonalities within them, offer their own unique opportunities. We will touch on these 3 main areas, cost of living, work income and business opportunities. As we previously covered extensively on these countries, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, we are able to provide you a detailed analysis by comparing these 3 highlighted cities. We will also provide a ranking system in the various comparisons.
If you are new to this channel, we are Fran and John, the Corporate Breakout Couple. Fran is Malaysian and John is Singaporean. We broke out of the corporate rat race in Singapore and got ourselves financially independent in 2020. I lived for a mere 10 years in Singapore, now live in Kuala Lumpur and also hold an apartment in Bangkok, I am a European though. Depending on your lifestyle and income, I would say Bangkok has a good price quality ratio, but Kuala Lumpur tops the list in that perspective, you get so much for the buck you pay. And Singapore is just outrageous in costs, but does deliver quality in return, depending on the definition of quality and what you regard as being priority. Needless to say, Singapore is second to none, when it comes to cleanliness, safety, infrastructure and development. Bangkok is second to none, if you love the intense heat, density, crowds, buzz, entertainment and so on. Kuala Lumpur is well developed, has a decent infrastructure, but at a fraction of the price. Not as exciting as Bangkok, not as sterile as Singapore. Literally and figuratively speaking, the city in the middle wins.

The most important thing is.. Control your lifestyle..I only earn RM4k a month but I've a 2 bedroom apartment and a Malaysian brand car..All fully paid up..And i can still afford to go on holiday twice a year (one domestic and one Thailand trip)

The food portion in Bangkok is on the tiny side. Razor thin beef slices, dainty pretty dishes that would not be enough to satisfy a bird. In KL, you simply help yourself to the rice and top up the food to your heart's content. The biggest bargain is petrol. Fill up the car with cheap petrol and drive yourself silly to every nook and cranny. And racing on the highway is a national pastime, burning away petrol.

Which city out of these 3 is best will depend on your living and work situation and nationality. Talking purely from the point of view of quality of life and working, not taking into account recent (now expired) Covid policies, I'd say Singapore is best due to the relatively clean air, good quality public transport, high wages and excellent infrastructure. There are enough things for both single people and families to do. On the downside, it's very expensive and over regulated. Kuala Lumpur is probably a close second. Could even be the best, but employment opportunities for foreigners aren't as good as in Singapore. That stated, Malaysians aren't as anti-foreigner as Thais, so finding a decent job or starting a business is much more straightforward than in the neighbor to the north. Malaysia is probably the best place to raise a family. Malaysians love children and their birth rate, though declining, is still significantly higher than in their neighbors to the north and south. Houses and land can be purchased by foreigners and while there is a minimum purchase amount, it's still very affordable. Visa policies are quite decent too. The worst of the bunch from the standpoint of employment opportunities and rights as a foreigner is Thailand. Foreigners can't own land, only condos in Thailand. It's very difficult to get a job in Thailand as a foreigner, unless you're a Cambodian or Burmese manual laborer, in which case you'll stand a very good chance. For Asian and western professionals, you have very limited opportunities outside of English teaching unless you start your own business, which comes with it's own challenges. Thailand is thus only a good choice for retirees, non-working expats, those who come and go because they work in another country or those who work remotely from their homes for an overseas based employer. Thus Singapore and Malaysia are where you go to work and make money, Bangkok is where you go to relax or play.

Earning money from first world country with higher cost of living and spending in third world country with lower cost of living is a best way. So earn good salary in Singapore and spend in Thailand on weekend and stay in Malaysia for cheaper accommodation than Singapore.

If I am a foreigner, unless I am paid in US$, I would rather work in Singapore. Even if I am to earn median wage in local currency, Singapore seems cheaper in cost of living based on yr examples of accommodation, food, transport etc. Imagine I earning in Malaysia the median salary of RM3.5k and paying RM3k for accommodation.

Not possible for you to live on RM3500 salary in KL. No way at all for a, foreigner. You would need at least RM10k per month and that's not even a high life. However you can live very well on SGD10k a month in Singapore

The salaries stated are median salaries. The median salary in KL is RM3800 which is USD800 It seems low even though some people in KL are earning loads is because the median salary is pulled down by the large number of low income Malaysians in KL. No wonder foreigners from Malaysia and Thailand love SG so much. Some say sgreans less hungry than foreigners especially those from third worlds. But this is wrong because everyone is hungry. But the Motivation / incentive is Different between sporens vs 3rd world foreigners. How so? So, so, ah Soh! See, if a sporen is paid $10/hr to wash plate, is he more motivated if paid $35 an hour suddenly? Of Course! A Malaysian is receiving about 35MYR when paid 10sgd. A sporen is paid 10sgd means 10sgd. The Motivation and Incentive is different. So, would a sg plate washer wash more happily than a malaysian? Use your brain lah! Humans are all the same. Incentive is different! Dont be fooled when "someone" try to blame sporens for losig jobs to foreigners saying we are lazy or picky. Its the salary that causes it. But strangely, very few Thai working in SG especially in PMET jobs and even construction where much of SG was built by Thais in the early years. Why? Cannot be due to Kra right? 😅

We don't know the answer to this. Our guess would be that the construction companies in Singapore will naturally hire foreigners who are cheaper & easier to obtain. Thailand economy has blossomed over the last 20+ years, so perhaps the Thais are very happy to remain in their country.

Given Bangkok salary is still so low, I am still puzzled why the PMET Thais or even construction Thais not coming to sg in the same numbers as before. Surely there are one or two here. There was a old rumor that Thais are wealthier now and so demand higher but this logic does not seem to hold water for me as Thais are still paid very low now based on your statistics. Also, many Malaysians though higher cost and higher living standards than Thais, are still coming to sg in huge numbers. Maybe a topic for your new episode interviewing Thais why no coming. Maybe Thai officials got some answers? Of course, to clarify, I am not denying there are many Thai ladies working in SG🫣👀 but I am referring to construction, PMET, tech

@@LonganLee You cannot compare Malaysians to Thais or other nationalities. Many Malaysians work in Singapore due to currency exchanges and closed proximity, majority of Malaysians work in Singapore by crossing the border every day hence they can save money by working in Singapore but living in Malaysia. Unless they work for high skills job with expat salaries. Another reason is similar cultures as Singapore considered not that 'alien' for Malaysians. I used to work in Singapore as a banker in 2000s so I lived in Singapore but now my nephew works in Singapore but living in JB as an engineer with flexibility working days, he only travel to Singapore 3 days a week. Remember, Singapore is still not allowing Indonesian men work in Singapore, except for women as maid/domestic helpers, otherwise Singapore full with them already.

But bangalas are even living further and yet replacing the Thais in construction. Perceivably, Thais have more educated workers than bangalas given higher levels of development. So it seems to be some other reasons why so few if any Thais work in SG construction 🚧 i think SG went from cheaper labor to even cheaperer labor. This explains it's low productivity.

Singapore is a good place to work only...yes you earn a lot but you lose a lot too because everything is so expensive..you can hardly park your car without paying..you dont have freedom in life becoz you are surrounded by strict law enforcement everywhere you go..example you can't simply park ot stop you car on the roadside even near the residential areas..Singapore is clean because of strict law enforcement not because of their culture..you dont find that much nature in singapore...mostly man made.no long sandy beaches, ..no mountains, no paddy field..no river, no waterfalls..you have to leave singapore to find those...
