The dough is called Patongo (pa-tong-go). It's everywhere in Thailand but Thais normally dip this in the sweetened condensed milk. The green dipping sauce is a pandan coconut custard aka Song-kha-ya. Check out a place called "Mont Nom Sod" in the old town area, it's probably most popular among the Thai for songkhaya.

There are 3 types of blood jelly in Thailand : 1. Pork blood - Mostly found in vegetable soup or a random noodle. Pretty tasteless. 2. Chicken blood - Mostly found in Khao Man Kai (chicken rice). Pretty tasteless. 3. Duck blood - Mostly accompany with steamed duck (also duck noodle). Probably the most salty one.

i love chinatown.. yaowarat... i stayed here for my time in bangkok.. wanted to stay in the hustling middle of the action... just right off the main road. everynight got to eat delicious street food.. there a nightly street market and the smell colors of chinatown is amazing.. i feed off the energy... its a great neighborhood... there is actually a MRT station in chinatown just recently open, Wat Mangkok, Sam Yot. at my time in 2018 they were just just in middle of that station project but its open now and makes it very easy to get to. enjoy! the drums and dragons is traditional performance part of Lunar New Year, which is in February 1, year of the tiger... so they are probably practicing prep for their acts, street routes.. probably part of their training.

In Indonesia, the Patongo is called Cakue. It's chinese snack originally I believe. We eat it by mixing in porridge. But you can also eat it directly. Usually it's long but some made it shorter. It's savory. but if you find the other one, usually shape like a pillow, it's the sweet one.

That picture at the patongo (or pantongko) stand you take is actually the picture of Thai princess making and selling that patongo dough. Her Royal Highness Princess Sirindhorn is known to be a very outgoing and down to earth. She attends and sponsors many festivals. I think that picture is when she presided over the open ceremony for the Chinese New Year festival at Chinatown and then helping out each of her favourite stalls/stands. FYI. The word "pantongo" (ปาท่องโก๋) is from the Chinese word 白糖糕 (báitánggāo) or 白糖粿 (báitángguǒ), which actually refers to other kind of snack/cake made from steamed rice dough (not the one you ate). But in Thailand, it was almost always sold together with deep fried dough (the one that you ate), which in Chinese is called 油條 (yóutiáo). Thai people just conflate the two and called them by the same name. But as the fried dough is more popular, Thai people nowadays when they say "pantongo" (ปาท่องโก๋ ; báitánggāo/báitángguǒ) they refer to youtiao (fried dough).
@OnePackWanderers
@OnePackWanderers 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for the insight! The Thai princess sound like a very down to earth, kind person! It's interesting how the name changed over time in Thailand. A few other commenters mentioned that, and it's funny how that happens everywhere with food.

If u revisit Yaowarat. or China Town. recommend u go there at weekend.. then extend further to klong Orng Arng canal.. Just a few hundred metres north of Yawaraj on foot.. U will feel a different atmosphere of shopping and eating by the canal at night. Try it.. Try this place.. It is not far.. Should go there in evening..or about 5 pm then. U can enjoy both Sampheng largest clothes market and Tha Nam Ratchawong pier which is by the Chao Praya river... and then to the Kong Orng Arng.. It is a 3 in one trip..

yes, in the past when these snacks were introduced they sold two different kinds together Pa-tong-ko (white steamed dough) and Uew-ja-kuay (deep fried dough). the peddler would shout "Patongko Uewjakuay" loudly to call customers. Among the two Uewjakuay was more favourite, and spread out all over the country. since it is the strange chinese name, the thais didnt really know the food just remember the shout "Patongko Uewjakuay" and shorten it as Patongko to call the deep fried dough. So it is only in Thailand that call this food Pa tong ko.

Actually, you can get to Chinatown by subway (MRT).

@OnePackWanderers 2 жыл бұрын
I think we misspoke. What we meant is that BTS doesn't have a direct line to Chinatown. Where we're staying, we would have to take BTS east to Asok and then MRT back west towards Chinatown. It would've cost us more than just using Grab 😅

15 min walk further during daytime to the place called The Old Siam, at the main hall there you'll get to enjoy all freshly made Thai food, snacks, and deserts. Recommend revisit Chinatown from 7pm and that canal (Klong Ong Ang) in your video. It's totally different from what you had seen, like two sides of the same coin. 😊
