Hi Ben, a friend recommended your channel for learning banjo. My 13 year old daughter loves your videos! We are having trouble figuring out what progression to watch your banjo videos for a lessons progression. She is a beginner, but has done some other KZbin clawhammer lessons. Thanks!

Ha, found some finger picks in my guitar drawer that I had purchased Years ago and tried to use and gave up. Then I'm buying some for my beginner banjo (Jameson replaced tuners,tailpiece, bridge) I then learned why they never worked for me.......upside down...Dur! Laughs on me for not asking but maybe we didn't have internet back then.

@@61mab it kinda depends though right, I mean if you were to play the clawhammer thing, it'd be alright.. Man, I play the guitar, so I'll do the 3 finger thing, because I hope that while I get better at playing banjo it might increase my speed on the guitar as well

Did you know you can control the resolution by clicking on the little gear beneath the video? I have a feeling that your settings are set for the video to play back at the highest resolution, but you have the option to turn the resolution down manually. This video plays nonstop on my cellphone, so I know a standard cable modem should be able to handle it at 240 or 360p.

I would LOVE to be able to do rolls well enough to play through a song. My main problem is that after I practice for a few hours, I get an ear worm, and hear nothing but that high pitched 5th string being plucked over and over. It drives me nuts.

Put a piece if tape on the fifth string at the bridge. A lot of old time banjo pickers do that to mute that fifth string. Just a little touch of the tape goes a long ways at muting it.

Something that comes to mind is if you purchased a guitar slide for your ring finger and used that to keep it straight and balanced. Just an idea, but hopefully you've found something that works!
@MrSF247
@MrSF247 4 жыл бұрын
I'd just learn to do it without resting s finger or buying a device to act as a finger to rest. I'm a predominantly classical guitarist and I see a lot of acoustic guitarists rest their pinky on the soundboard. I've never needed to do that and have had no problems playing anything other guitarists play resting their pinky and playing with the other fingers; including this banjo roll technique. Just work on hovering your hand over the strings and resting your forearm in a spot that best facilitates that.

I don't know what kind of roll this would be classified as, but I came up with this one that I kinda like.. 5-1-2-3-1-4-1-2-1 T-M-I-T-M-T-M-I-M (T = Thumb, M = Middle, I = Index) I'm sure it's a roll that's already been invented, so I'm not acting like I stumbled onto anything groundbreaking here. Lol
