I remember getting Banjo Kazooie on my birthday (Halloween) when I was 8 years old. That same day, we moved our small little CRT TV into my room as it was officially "mine" for me to keep and play on, as an extra birthday gift. I still remember not having a table stand for the TV and having it on the floor, and after we went out trick-or-treating, I instantly went to my room to start it up. There were some days in November I pretended to be sick and stayed home from school to play it. I still remember how magical it was to play Click Clock Wood for the first time, literally one of the best level designs I've ever seen, and I would sometimes fantasize or imagine coming across Click Clock Wood in real life in my hometown, and sometimes still do. 10 years later it was re-released on Xbox Live and this time I played it with a friend as a co-op style and that was so much fun too to do it a 2nd time with a buddy. One of the greatest gaming experiences I ever had.

On the topic of "Just make the maps biggar" I remember playing Vampire: The Masquerade, and at one point someone said "Look, I dunno, okay? He didn't say what he was doing in town. I just remember him mentioning he was heading back to the Lakeview Hotel." And I'm like "Lakeview Hotel? Oh shit! I know that place! I pass by it for half my mission objectives!" And so I didn't need a map marker, or a minimap, to get there, because the game wasn't filled with extraneous and background-filling buildings. Everything there serves a purpose. And heck, same for Phoenix Wright or Ghost Trick. You know those moments when one character goes on for a few lines too many about how they enjoyed the popsicles a lot? That'll come up later, when it turns out that the killer dumped out some of the water in the tub that waters down the sugar in the popsicles, so he could hide the murder weapon. *Everything* in that game has a place in the story, all part of the puzzle. Apparently that's hard to pull off because even huge high-budget games with one visionary creator can end up with a tangled mess of a story and unintroduced elements left hanging (you may know what I mean), huge parts of a big city map copy-pasted with no substance to large parts of it, etc.
@featurelength50869 жыл бұрын
+Katana San Andreas- big-ass map (for its time) with huge open roads for car chases, yet it's all so instantly recognizable that you feel as at-home as you do replaying Doom for the hundredth time. I totally agree with you on all points, just saying it has been done with huge maps. Or how about Sam and Max, probably the last good 90s adventure series before Telltale started making glorified visual novels? Where all the puzzles are batshit insane cartoon logic, but because the game is consistent with its stupidity, you'll feel like the idiot when you finally figure it out and it seems obvious in hindsight? Compared to either getting a Goddamn map marker and in-game Wikipedia for everything, or being thrown into the world being told absolutely nothing.
@Katana3149 жыл бұрын
Uh...bad examples in my opinion. I loved San Andreas, but wouldn't exactly recognize every block, and a lot of the city had no specific function to it. And Sam and Max's puzzles, like so many other Lucasarts games, just didn't make sense, even in retrospect. This is the era that brought us the infamous "Monkey Wrench" puzzle.
@featurelength50869 жыл бұрын
Katana I've never played Hit the Road, I was referring to Telltale's 3 seasons/series, where the puzzles are still stupid but they make sense in the context of "it's looney tunes with guns." San Andreas is subjective, I suppose. I'd say the city does serve a purpose. since you spend half the game either in a race or impromptu demolition-derby. At that point, if you're doing open-world, it's really important to make the city navigable. It's not important that every building do something or every neighborhood have a quest giver as long as they provide a landmark when you're driving. I feel like Rockstar lost that in IV and v, as I couldn't find my way around even when I forced myself to try and learn the layout without the GPS function. Saints Row 2 is an example of both, the city's memorable and it's packed with shit to (though I hadn't thought of it when I first posted.)
@hemangchauhan28649 жыл бұрын
+Katana Great thought. Not every game can pull it off to create everything so interconnected, and they compromise this by making other aspects of the games more refined. But if they manage to do both, it's beyond amazing!

I am surprised at how little people know of this game, hands down the best platform game of its time. The idea was to beat Mario 64 which revolutionized 3D platformers and RARE wanted to take the Mario formula and enhance it and it ended up being the best thing ever made for the N64. Even Banjo-Tooie towards the end of the N64's life cycle enhanced Kazooie's formula and made an already polished game, even more amazing! RARE were an amazing development company... Side note: Banjo deserves to be in Smash, fuck all the politics and legal issues, Banjo is apart of the Nintendo family! Dunkey make this go viral plz! #banjoforsmash

Banjo-Kazooie are still a part of the Nintendo family even after buyout, Rare never forgot about Banjo-Kazooie being canon to Donkey Kong, they have thrown in 3 Diddy Kong Racing Easter Eggs in Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts, Banjo himself mentioned DKR 2 times and the quiz before the end of the game asks the question "what was Banjo's first appearence in a video game which wasn't his own", the right answer was DKR, how did they mention DKR in a Microsoft game without being sued by Nintendo, we might never know how.

"In Banjo Tooie the levels are too big and everything takes too long to do" also Dunky "My favorite level is the one you have to play 4 times."
@RedFloyd4693 жыл бұрын
I think the difference is that in the first example, you are NOT engaged directly with the gameplay, and are really just doing menial, mindless things, that look "grand" because of the scale of the game. Whereas in the second example, regardless of how large the level is, or how many times you play it, it consistently keeps you engaged in different, fun and interesting ways. One of the worst feelings when playing a game, is boredom. Sometimes a genre might just be a bit "slower" or more "immersive", requiring slower interaction and a large, less "gamey" world. However, a lot of times, slow and shallow gameplay is just bad design.
@ty12983 жыл бұрын
@@RedFloyd469 imo Click Clock Wood is guilty of that. It seems interesting at first but climbing the tree over and over gets mindless and menial, not to mention the biggest nightmare in the series when going for that 100%. Tooie did have its fair share of slow, bad design as well but I find these moments in both games so forgivable. Those moments feel like it was just a result of passionate devs getting too caught up in an awesome idea that's really only awesome on paper. And personally I just like being in those worlds. Sure I'll take 5 minutes to give a dinosaur a ride on a train, I got nowhere else to be.

Banjo Tooie is still a good game but what i don't like about it is how you can't 100% a world without going into the next world to learn a move that you need to get a few missing jiggys. The worlds are bigger in Banjo Tooie but at least you have the telepads to move around to key area's quicker. For anyone who likes Banjo Kazooie i still highly recommend to play Banjo Tooie. Its still a fun game to 100%. DK64 however takes the whole collectathon too far. I still love playing DK64 but its just not a fun game to 100%. They get to carried away with the bonus barrels in the later levels and some of them are broken (Beaver Bother) and most of them are just not fun. Dk64 is a fun game to finish just not worth getting 100%.
@ty12983 жыл бұрын

Dickhis Khan, I can fully relate to the years of effort, my original save file (from when I was six all the way to when I was 9) has almost 2 years time played. Exactly. Banjo-Tooie felt like a slightly more 'grown up' version of Banjo Kazooie. More dark, deeper voice for Banjo, post-apocalyptic scenes.. I like it when games grow up along-side you. "Linear" has such a negative connotation now, it might as well be in the same category as the swastika.
@noneofyourbusiness42946 жыл бұрын
Drew P. Weiner well, there's good and bad linear. If it doesn't feel like it's always the same, linear games can be good games, just as open world games and games in the style of Mario 64 or Banjo Kazooie can suck, if they feel like there's nothing to do. (Which obviously isn't the case for those two games). I mean, take Banjo Kazooie, and remove half of the mechanics. Would feel repetitive in basically no time. But it HAS all the mechanics, and literally everything talks to you, the soundtrack is one of those that makes you play a game for 6 hours straight and you wonder where the time went. Or take Donkey Kong Country. The levels are linear, but it just keeps most people playing it

@XadePsyconic6 жыл бұрын
Linearity is a double-edged sword, as is nonlinearity. While linearity is limiting, it also allows developers to focus on refining the stage and keeping it consistently interesting. Nonlinearity provides players with more options, but developers can lose focus if they get too wrapped up in it, and a lot of times players will feel as though there is no direction.
@linus67185 жыл бұрын
Agreed. The main negative criticism I hear about Super Mario 3D World is that it's "too linear", and that's it. No other reason.
