I just got a banjo from my uncle, and I learned that these friction pegs exist. Quickly decided to upgrade it! Apparently there is only one friction stringing video on KZbin, and it didn't work. This worked like a champ! It popped right out! Thank you!

Personally, I hope I never have to do this, but I love knowing how it’s done! Thanks Jake!

Very nice! Thanks for taking the time to show this. I've been thinking about upgrading my tuner pegs. This video will help!

Thanks, great tip. I have built my own banjos and I know mine will come right out, but this tip is filed away for future use. Also, if you used a thicker block of wood to fulcrum the clawhammer on (had to throw "clawhammer" in, as long as we are talking banjo) it would take less pressure when removing the tuner.

I split the neck on a cheap banjo doing it maybe it was glued. It was not bad I put a new one in everything worked make sure it is not glued if so you can heat them.

I had a banjo bought from Walmart, and it was easily pulled right off! I’m going to add planetary tuners to it , and a new 5th tuner

if i wanted to play a 4 string banjo, would it be optimal to remove the 5th string in this way and only play on 4 strings with 1 missing?

I'm wondering the same thing.

Mine snapped and now i have nothing to grip. No idea how im going to get it out.

Use yer fingers and thumb to reach around the neck to hold the block of wood. Wow!😮 There are tools designed for pulling shafts and studs. They keep the force aligned with the shaft so you dont bend it - which is a real risk as a number of comments have pointed out. Use the right tool to avoid foreseeable consequences.

When I saw this video my only concern was the potential for bending the screw. I tried this method and with minimal pressure applied, the screw broke off inside of the tuner. I then protected the neck on the nut side of the peg and put claws of the hammer under the large part of the peg and it popped right out. Do not try to remove by putting pressure on this small screw and risk ruining the tuner. The tuner is stronger than the screw.

Doubt you did it correctly it’s simple leverage lad use clawhammer not framing hammer and use a block of wood not the neck of the banjo

@@Dheuedbv I placed the neck of my banjo on the outside set of the legs of a chair ( protected the neck with a towel ) on the other side of the chair' I placed a broom handle on the outside of those legs' I used an old guitar string that I had laying around/ biggest one that would fit through the whole of the tuner and wrap the other end of the string around the broom handle' I then took an old piece of rebar I had laying around 3/8" bent a 90 degree crook in it "to be used as a handle" I then took a 6 point 9/16 3/8 drive socket and slide it on the button of the tuner' I then slide the end of the rebar into the socket , I stood back and slowly began to cracnk the 6' piece of rebar thats attached to the socket that's attached to the tuner that has the guitar string attached to it that has the other end of the string attached to the broom handle that's resting up against the legs on the opposite side of the chair that has the banjo neck resting up against the chair legs on that side' I slowly kept turning the rebar and the string began to get tighter and tighter' I then undid all that mess and got rid of it and then took a shoe string' tied a loop in and put it around the tuner and pulled it out with my hand.
