I had the honor to meet this gentle fellow in 1968 while I worked at WLW-T in Cincinnati on the Midwestern Hayride Show. I have met many celebrities, many stars of country music who would never remember my name. Not so Stringbean. Stringbean was the nicest celebrity I ever met, humble, showed concern for the lowest set-up-fellow, totally unaffected in the way he related to everyone. He was genuine. What a loss to music in America.

Stringbean played for a while with Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys before Earl Scruggs joined them and gave Bluegrass its distinctive sound. I remember watching Porter Wagoner and Flatt and Scruggs on Saturday evening all the time when I was young. I saw String on the shows quite often and have grown to appreciate just how good a banjo player he was with the frailing style. I remember when he and Estelle were killed. It was a shock to everyone.

the truth is im a metalhead who has always listened to death metal and old school thrash metal .... ive also been playing guitar for about 13 years now and when i heard stringbean i automatically loved the guy he can fucking play awsome..... when u actually play guitar u have even more appreciation and understanding of how much skill he actually has now i find myself listening to him everyday pretty much, i can have tattooes and long metal hair and wear metal shirts everyday and still love this!

What is so sad to me is that I did not see him in the Country Music Hall of Fame or the Bluegrass Hall of Fame. I looked for his name in both. Bill Monroe once called him the finest banjo player he knew. I had the pleasure of seeing him perform as a child.

Stringbean used to stop by Shelby, NC and play music with Lester Flat and Earl Scruggs and perform in theaters where my father worked. That was before I was born. Daddy NEVER grew tired of any of them...and yes Stringbean's pants were worn low, not to show his bottom, but because Stringbean was also a comic.

Yeah for sure, but you have to realize dressing Stringbean would be like trying to dress a mop handle LOL he is sooo thin. Nothing for clothes to hang to so they just hang off. The vertical stripe shirt does not help him look heavier and that was part of his thin gimmick knowingly or not. Hate to say it but that shirt looked like Nazi death camp clothes the people in them wore and he looked pretty starved himself. Not to say one had anything to do with the other at all. He's just so thin and he capitalized on his "Stringbean" appearance obviously. Fantastic Banjo banger though!!

@hom859 my parents were country music fans, I was in a training program @ vandy--july 73 thru to june 74 -I saw you great--uncle, Marty Robbins, Minnie Pearl...so many I forget...It truly was a wonderful musical experience but I felt the Ryman was a death trap--I worried about fires--spent every time we went looking at exits. not at the Ryman but saw Jimmy Buffett as he was just getting started, Linda Ronstadt...it has gown huge now but those sleepy old days made some good memories

"Bean was greatly loved by all the other country artists. I used to love it when Porter Wagoner had him on his show. Stringbean would keep him laughing the whole show. Porter even adopted his signature hand gesture. They used to travel and do shows a lot together and Porter could tell some great tales from those times. Porter had to do the driving, though. Stringbean never was licensed to drive and never drove, anywhere. His wife, Estelle, did all his driving for him. I still miss him. RIP Stringbean. Hope the fish are bitin' in Heaven.

I've often wondered but just wrote it off as one of his quirks, I guess. Grandpa Jones, probably his best friend second to his wife, couldn't understand it either. They went in and bought 'Bean's farm together and later got him a tractor, mostly for plowing his garden. Grandpa said he liked to have never gotten Stringbean on it, but he finally did -- only time he'd ever seen him drive anything. Whenever Grandpa was supposed to take him to the Opry, when Estelle was unable to for whatever reason, he said he'd get a call from 'Bean sometime that day: "Grandpa's gonna take me to the Opry tonight, ain't he?" LOL Porter said whenever they were together on the road, Porter driving of course, 'Bean would every once in a while say, "Boy, that Porter Wagoner sure is a good driver." LOL He was a funny man, so says Grandpa, and I think he meant funny ha-ha as well as funny kinda peculiar, but loved by all, quirks and all.

Stringbean was just a good ol boy who influenced guitar shredding and fast rapping. He and his loved ones lived off small game, fish and apples. It was all they could do to stay together so they could all survive together.
