I use shad darts in the 1/16 oz size. Green/chartreuse, red/chartreuse, red/white have been my go to colors. My dad hooked a chinook last season at Bonneville, hook bent out same as yours, and he lost it. I love how hard the shad fight!

I keep shad for bait as well. I have a cooler that says “SHAD” because once you use something to carry dead shad, it’s pretty much worthless for anything else.

I love shad fishing!! I started using bobbers for shad about 10 years ago, it’s a whole lot of fun. Just cheap bobbers and whatever jig you want. Just have to stay away from the crowd. It’s definitely helped with losing gear though

That does sound like fun, what depth do you usually set it at?
@kroutdooradventures5 ай бұрын
@@NWfishin I usually start at about 3-4 feet and stay somewhat close to shore. I start moving it deeper after a handful of drifts. Sometimes it takes a bit to find the fish.

This was interesting. I have been meaning to fish below Bonneville for shad but haven't been able to get away to do it. It looked like a blast. Nothing like fish in abundant numbers that are super willing to hit a lure. I was interested to see you fishing the Okuma lightweight rod as I recently bought one except it is 6'6" instead of the 7'6". It seemed to work good for you which makes me feel good about my choice. Thanks for the video.

They are very good crab bait. We run half and half in our bait boxes of shad and chicken, the seals don’t seem to tear up the traps like they do if you use salmon or steelhead heads. Springers this year was dismal. 3 trips and landed only one. Total of two take downs, 3 losses and one landed in 3 trips. Tight lines!

Fished the Bonneville back in ‘70-‘80’s for shad with my grandpa. Picked up a peculiar way of fishing for them from the Vietnamese. He would pickle and can them. Better than canned tuna.

Beacon Rock for the Bonneville fishery. You can also fish off the ends of the wing dams out of Camas/Washougal or St Helens, OR

I enjoyed this video and it is certainly timely. I have two questions. 1. Would Shad (chunks or strips) be a good bait for bottom fishing for Lings? 2. If you were in a boat that launched from Scappoose where would you go for Shad? Thanks
@kylematthews97545 ай бұрын
Yes!!! They work great for bottom fishing! Some friends and I used to have a shad fishing trip so we had bait for our summer trip to Barview, OR. We would use them for crab bait and bottom fishing.

When I first watched this video I swear he said that a fishing license wasn't required for Shad in WA. Not sure if he uploaded a new version with that clipped out or I was just hearing things, but after researching you do in fact need a valid license (unlike for carp and smelt). So, if like me you were planning on taking the whole family to go fish without licenses, you might want to re-think that. 😢 This applies to both WA and OR.
@spiltmilt5 ай бұрын
Many years ago that was case. This weekend however is free fishing weekend so you could take the whole family for free.

What's the farthest up-river toward the tri-cities that you can go to reliably find shad to catch right now? Thinking of taking the kids over from the Palouse to get some action, but Boneville is a long ways. I do have a boat, but shore would be preferable so I don't have to take the boat.
