BANKRUPTCIES Galore! Is Anyone Safe in Trucking?
______________
Unfortunately, we are BACK reporting on more closures in our industry that occurred over the weekend. Arnold Transportation and Raven Transport Co of Jacksonville, Florida both closed their doors, leaving dozens of drivers without work.
This is a trend that is becoming all too common in our industry, and we are sad to see it. Again, we want to bring you the latest news on what’s been happening in trucking and spread awareness so others can recognize the signs of a sinking ship, and get out before it’s too late.
Is there anything we missed from these two updates? Do you feel like your job as a driver is in jeopardy as this trend continues to touch more companies?
Let us know in the comments below!

I personally think it's a much deeper problem than just transportation companies going out of business. It's a tanking economy in the US and Canada is a real issue. There are two paper mills in Canada that just went out of business Domtar Espanola, Ontario and Abitibi Iroquois Falls , Ontario. Thousands of people not only lost their jobs, they've lost their homes.

No. I said it and will say it again and again. The Trucking Industry in America is the most competitive of any industry in the world, as crazy as that may sound. The AI revolution is already here. Gas and pedal for an 18-wheeler. All skill has been removed. Any clown coming into the country can do it for a living and they do. Competition is immense, on top of that it is an utterly free market industry as if the fed is experimenting on it, nothing is controlled, nothing, completely free market which means marginal cost of service falls to zero and in many cases you lose money on a load, all owner ops do. Tik tok which I care not for gets banned to protect youtube shorts or Alphabet Inc. Google, it’s called corporative protectionism. All free market in trucking folks, sheer jungle.
@NorthAmerican-Trucking-News
@NorthAmerican-Trucking-News 19 күн бұрын
But simply stopping won't resolve the issue. We need to ensure that those rates simply don't exist. If we simply remove ourselves from the occasion, it simply means we no longer work, while others are continuing to work these low rates. Maybe something like placing legal enforcements on the minimum rate per mile that loads are allowed to be given for? Or a universal strike until rates go up across the board?

I too was an arnold driver. Almost the day that pride logistics bought our company out you could tell the writing was on the wall. I was one of their first drivers on the reefer division when we got introduced to it and the management underneath pride was so absolutely awful that after a year and a 1/2 I transferred back to becoming a dry van. When pride learned I wanted to transfer back they cut my miles down to nearly 1200 a week. This went on for about six weeks before I finally got back to the terminal to go to apply for dry van. I get pulled into the office and told I am being terminated. Reason: Low mileage Good riddance.

I watched all of the Berkshire Hathaway AGM on Saturday. Buffett is selling stocks for both tax losses and substantial gains that will be taxed at 21% currently. He says taxes on gains are going up bigly maybe to 45% and soon. More importantly, he holds about USD$190 billion cash and that is invested in risk-free short-term US treasuries at 5.20% and that is very important. Yes, he has cash ready to deploy BUT he also knows that when these short rates finally collapse that will be a sure marker for an economic downturn. At that moment he goes on alert for distressed assets. Now, he waits. And he gets paid. My thinking is that with very high and growing cash holdings he is expecting a Biblical economic flood scenario. That is what it looks like to me. The economy is already heading down. Truck Transportation is dead canary sending a message!!

Taxes on capital gains should go way up, it’s unearned income. A society can only afford to pay compound interest on rich people’s savings for so long before the country collapses. Important to always remember that money doesn’t grow an economy, labor creates all productivity, interest payments steal the wealth from workers.

Its all about the economy. People stop buying products, those products dont get shipped. 2020/21 gov says stay home and here is some free money to spend so they ordered lots of stuff, demand for shipping those goods were way up. Now it all fizzeled out, people dont have money to spend= less buying, less shipping. Not to mention the many people who came here to drive on work Visas saturated the market also. Too many trucks and too many drivers with dying demand= cheap rates, plus rising insurance and diesel fuel= a recipe for failure.

Over 100,000 carriers bankrupt or out of business in 2023 another 30,000 so far this year and thousands and thousands of Brokers bankrupt and out of business as well. And that has yet to put a dent in the supply-demand of trucking capacity and rate volume with the rates still so low carriers are running on borrowed time borrowed time. Supply chain pendulum swing it's a fact and we will not see pre-pandemic rates until 2nd quarter 2025. I parked my six trucks the end of 2022 and have been operating as a company driver since the second quarter of 2023 and will continue to do so until April of next year when the rates rebound to a point where I can experience a sustainable Market profit margin

Challenger is Doing permanent layoffs. Driver's and office staff. I have heard numbers as high as 300 out of Cambridge and Mississauga. Owner-operators are being offered the opportunity to expand their fleets by purchasing challenger equipment. There was absolutely no warning to the drivers. They were brought in at the end of their shift and given their walking papers.

Isn't this good for the trucking industry? Someone has to run the loads. With the lack of big fleets, it leaves room for the owner operators to make a comeback. Less trucks on the road leads to more competitive rates on loads. Sounds like a win for the little guys which is what has been the complaint in the industry for 10 years+
