Yes and no. Too many rule changes in judo have come from trying to keep it in the Oly's. The other side of that coin is how much judo had grown and innovated because of that. Judoka have taken techniques from different disciplines, free style wrestling, sambo, Grecko-Roman wrestling, etc. The shimisho no waza are all techniques that are not part of the gokyu and many have come from other disciplines, or were just "invented" by fighters. Being an Olympic sport has caused some rule changes that you can argue have not made judo better. It has also created the situation that has allowed judo to continue to breath, grow and evolve, and not be static like some other martial arts.

Judo was developed as a form of physical education first, which is why some ju-juts techniques were modified and made less dangerous - the idea of mutual welfare and benefit and being able to practice without getting injured. But to say judo was not about fighting or self-defense would be disengenuous. But because it is an international sport, judoka have invented new techniques and brought in techniques from other disciplines. Many of those have added to the self-defense benefit of judo. But the reason judo is so great for self-defense is that it is real. And practicing it as a sport is what keeps it real. I do like your comment about being a “retro judo” coach.

The reason for the rule change was the IOC wanted stronger differentiation between the sports of Judo and Wrestling. The IOC came to both sports with a list of changes that were to be implemented. As I see things developing today, in the future Judo will only hold throws for kindergarten. IT IS a MARTIAL ART, period, if you do not want to get hurt do gardenry, weavering or chess. Reducing it only to be a harmless sport is like prostituting its soul.

As adicional context (and so wrestling braindeads can know about It), wrestling was being dropped as a PERMANENT sport in the olympic games. The discusión was made around the same time the leg grabs were banned. That being said, its possible that we dont see wrestling in the 2028 olympics. Amplíe time to adapt was given until the new generation continued their olympic career.
@vincentkendlbacher9765 Жыл бұрын
The olympics need judo not the other way around... You cant adapt the whole sport only to stay in the olympics - at some point its not the same sport anymore 🤷

They would have done sports, competition and fairness a bigger favor by allowing another "drop" to point once you loaded up the opponent instead of a drop on the back. Those flips with the opponent on your shoulders look spectacular, but my guess was always that they fear that someone lands on the neck or otherwise badly and cause major injuries. Single and double leg shooting is an easy, fast and in now many sports used takedown - to ban that is hilarious.

I really hate how, Judo used to be top level for self defense, the best sport, and now IJF is restricting rules and making judo less entertaining, less attractive. Competitive Judo is not the best self-defense, as before.

Yes, it's not said by anyone, but everyone at that time knnew that it was strongly wanted by the japanese federation in order to stop the overpower of the russian school. It didn't worked, it just has made Judo more poor, but that's what you get when politics mix with real things.

If that's true, it'd apply to Georgians as well. Cuz there's no such thing as leg grabs in Chidaoba, Georgia's traditional wrestling. In the 1990s, All Japan Judo Federation(AJJF) opposed the introduction of blue judogi in a big way. European Judo Union(EJU) decided to introduce blue judogi at international competitions in Europe in 1994. In response, when AJJF indicated its intention to boycott the competitions, EJU reversed its decision. However, AJJF gave in to the wishes of Europe after Park, supported by EJU, became president of the IJF in 1995. In contrast, AJJF has never expressed any opposition to leg grabs. After Vizer became IJF president in 2007, IJF no longer had anyone on the board of directors from Japan. Under these circumstances, How can the European-led IJF be at the beck and call of Japan? To be precise, there have been two board members since 2013, when a total ban on leg grabs was decided. However, both of these are mere decorations since they don't have voting rights.

@@64Rosso The Russian school of Judo is high amplitude and they didn't do leg grabs, where the fuck are you getting this? The Russian style is more reliant on pick ups and hugging grips- both of which tend to be countered by leg grabbing.

As most agree Judo got ruined by these cowardly and/or greedy for cash (entertainment over practicality) ideas and the martial arts cut from judo was so useful it became one of the most successful martial arts in the modern era Brazilian Jiu Jitsu… it seems bjj will eventually go full circle combing wrestling judo Sambo and ne waza to become good judo again ( that’s at least in adcc where takedowns matter more)
