I VAGUELY remember my Dad taking me to see this movie IN THEATERS when I was like 5 years old (cuz like almost any young kid that was into video games back in the late 80s to early 90s, I was OBSESSED with Mario and Sonic). For one, I barely remembered anything about this movie (aside from the small reptile-head men in trench coats, Yoshi, the scene where they turn that guy into a monkey, and the ending battle where King Koopa just kinda transforms into Capri Sun and melts). And for two, I don’t remember hating the movie (hell, maybe I even liked it) but I DO vaguely remember walking out of the theater after the movie was over, feeling like, “WTF DID I JUST WATCH?!”

I was that kid in the neighborhood that was obsessed with the Mario games. I remember back in the day I was so hyped about the movie that I didn't watch trailers, I threatened and begged my friends not to talk about it when I'm around, and I walked on eggshells for MONTHS not to gain any info on this movie. I even went as far as to stop reading my favorite magazine, Nintendo Power. I remember being absolutely shellshocked walking out of the theatre. Fun fact, the directors of this movie wanted to make this movie edgier and R-rated. The scene where they were in the club according to John Leguizamo they hired strippers for actors and the big Bertha dance scene was suppose to be damn near, "Basic Instinct" club scene sexualized.

Also fun fact: all of that changed when Disney bought the distribution rights, and wanted it a PG. Witch you may think is Disney ruining the movie, but actuality they were the ones who made the movie have more to do with the game. If I remember correctly Our side of Mario, Luigi, and Daisy, Kupa every other character such as toad, yoshi, I think even big britha had different names, The bomb was just a regular bomb, their was no super Mario score, and they didn’t have the red and green clothing.

Max Headroom wasn't created for the Coke ads. The character existed in a TV film Max Headroom: 20 Minutes Into The Future. Coke licensed Headroom after his popularity hosting music videos on MTV. The American series, Max Headroom was itself a remake of the British TV Film and development began before the ads.

@@davidjames579 i don't think they were lying, they just seem misinformed and their perspective on the directors was that they were overly pretentious in their vision for the movie and how overly pretentious they seemed in their involvement with max headroom even though they created it, so I think it's targeted more towards them than max headroom itself. plus they don't seem to admire the movie's current fan status as a cult classic.

Fun Facts: * The film was originally going to be animated * It was later changed to a live-action film in the vein of the Wizard of Oz. There's some concept art of this stage. * Dustin Hoffman lobbied hard for the role Mario (it was for his kids) * Arnold Schwarzenegger was a hopeful to play Bowser in make-ups & prosthetics. There's concept art of him. I think they still wanted him to play "Bowser Trump", but Dennis Hopper was signed on instead. * Danny DeVito was never asked to play Mario, despite what some hopeful rumours would want you to think. * The producers wanted Tom Hanks to play Mario. * The script that became Super Mario Bros Movie was based an unrelated sci-fi comedy script, hence why the weird dino-people. * Bob Hoskins broke his hand during filming the van chase, they had to paint his cast red. * They strangely applied random Mario enemies to certain characters like Iggy, Spike & Big Bertha. You can also see other references such Boom Boom Bar. * Hoskins & John Leguizamo got through rough patches of filming by getting drunk. * Everybody hated working with directors Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, cause they were dicks. * This is a technically a Disney movie as it released under their Hollywood Pictures label. So one can say they hired strippers in a Disney movie. * Dennis Hopper & Bob Hoskins use a recoloured Nintendo Super Scope at the end * There's a sequel webcomic by the one of original writers. * Dan Castellaneta of Simpsons fame voiced the Narrator & Frank Welker of Scooby Doo, Transformers & Aladdin fame voiced Yoshi, the Koopa Troopas & the Goombas (Not like they're recognisable in anyway).

Repost from the comments This movie is technically a Disney movie, believe it or not! While not produced by them(It's actually indie movie as it was produced by inidpenent filmmakers) Dinsey bought the distribution rights to the film, in hopes that they could get the theme park rights to Mario. However after watching the rough cut of the film, they decided to realses under their" Hollywood pictures " name, which was bascaily Touchstones sister branch, generally for movies they don't want anyone to know they had any involvement. Either because they didn't want critics and awards voters to go in this a bias (for example The Sixth Sense, The Scarlet Letter, Arachnophobia and were released under Hollywood pictures) but more often then not were movies they were too embarrassed to admit they had any involvement in(Such as The Ernest movies, The first Puppet masters,Jack, Spy Hard,or Biodome)

Even though this movie IS awful, I’ve kinda learned to give it SOME credit in my older years. The production/set design for Dinohattan is kinda interesting (in a dystopian Blade Runner kind of way) and considering the plot for the Mario series gives you very little context to WHY anything is the way it is, I’ve always been kinda impressed that they managed to turn that into this.

I saw this in the theater when I was 12, and I consider it a milestone in the development of my cinematic taste. It was the first movie I ever saw on a big screen that left me going 'What the fuck even WAS that?' I mean, I'd already seen Star Trek 5 and learned that sometimes movies in franchises that you love can be very, very stupid...and also that if you're at a drive-in multiplex, you can at least WATCH a different movie when you get bored, even if you can't hear Freddy Krueger's one-liners. But Super Mario Brothers was different. Because it had a great cast (even at 12, I knew Dennis Hopper was a legend), and...interesting production design, I guess...but it belonged in a different movie. It doesn't work with the broad cartoony comedy. If they'd committed to one thing or the other...or just, I dunno, resembling the storyline or gameplay of SMB at all, this could've been something. I mean, it's a real basic story, so it should've been easy enough to find some kind of riff on it without mutant dinosaur people. So yeah, the SMB movie taught me a whole new kind of disappointment. The disappointment of not even knowing what I just saw, but knowing that I definitely got ripped off.

I think one aspect of trying to jam in something from the games that they (and in fairness a lot of reviewers) overlooked was how they tried to adapt fire-flowers instead making fire-spewing guns that seem to just either shoot a small burst of flames or shoot straight up fireballs. Also it's what Koopa tries to use to kill the Mario Bros. in the final battle so I guess it's another way of trying to make up for the lack of Koopa not shooting flames from his mouth I guess.

Big Bertha is the red piranha like fish from the video game. How and/or why they have it being portrayed by Francesca P. Roberts is beyond me. But apparently this movie was plagued by all kinds of chaos from the directors, producers, and writers to the point where almost every single person was just frustrated to a level of 12 on a scale from 1 to 10.
