I just got my two pack today and they have worked out great so far. You can’t use the latest version of chirp to program them, but Baofeng has the software on their site that you can download to do all the programming.

The number of fars is more dependent on the antenna. Sure, 5 watts will transmit farther than 1 watt, but the antenna... Also, your fars may vary due to terrain. Nice review. Thanks!

The radio's Channel Search feature is nice, especially since it shows the CTCSS / Digital tone! Its an onboard frequency counter. Hopefully their future 🐷 Ham radios will have this too!? Its very useful, when traveling to new locations and wanting to easily join in a conversation. It would be useful in a SHTF shituation too! 😮 The Reverse feature is also handy trying to triangulate a radios location, when they are in use on a repeater.

Dude, you were not kidding. I could not have done it without your helpful "Easy Guide To GMRS Licensing On The FCC Website" tutorial. That was one of the hardest most confukulating things I have ever done. If anyone plans on getting a GMRS license be prepared to enter the same info over and over and over and then some more. The application is a test of how bad you want one. Persevere! $35 is the cost (and your sanity).

Still charging? About 3yrs ago, they passed legislation that was supposed to make GMRS free (same one that made HAM lic no longer free). Odd how they somehow managed to immediately implement the HAM lic charge, and still haven't found the time to implement free GMRS.

Got an Icom mobile VHF/UHF rig a few years back. Screen has poor contrast, no radio bracket in box ($40 extra), no head unit bracket (another $40 extra), no programming cable in box ($50 extra), and no bluetoooth without an adapter board (and yet ANOTHER $100.) Realistically, we're talking about $20 worth of parts here. That all didn't go down smooth after having just dropped 4 bills on a new radio, plus all the other stuff to hook it up, including an antenna... Made me feel a certain kind of way about the big brands.

I think I should give this radio a try in the future. I have a UV-5RPro which does pretty well… at *listening* to various frequencies and channels, but we don’t want to transmit on GMRS with those lest “some people” get sad at my decisions. The programming sequence using software was just weird. Also, there is the Channel 15 no transmit issue. To me, the UV5G programming was more logical and had a better receiver.

I have not experienced any issue with sending/receiving on GMRS 15 from my UV9G. Was I just a lucky purchaser? No issues with channel programming either.

I finally bit the bullet and ordered this UV5G Plus. Had it less than 24 hrs and thus far I absolutely love it. Proprietary software loaded easily in my finicky computer. Programming and channel layout is intuitive and logical. Receive and receive audio is excellent. I have only made two contacts and they were on the fringe of a repeater 20 miles away that I normally have trouble hitting with a 20W mobile. Reports of my signal were good, considering. This is one of, maybe THE first, Chinese ht I have had that I cannot find serious fault with. Hoping RT Systems comes out with a version of their software for it as the RT software usually has a few perks that improve over proprietary software.

Have you seen the Quansheng "UV-5R Plus" It looks like it's going to be able to run the same modified firmware as their K5 and K6. It's amazing what those Quansheng radios can do. And their price is pretty similar to the Baofeng.

Were you actually able to do this? Using the latest version, dated 2023-11-29, on both a Win10-64 and MacOS computer, this does not work. It gives the error message of "Error reading data from radio: not the amount of data we want.". That is using the supplied programming cable from Baofeng, which does work with their proprietary CPS.

Surprisingly Nice for the Price... Here in the U.K I have UV-5RH although badge shows BF-5RH These are sold as Tri Band or Multi Band. But appear to be the same format/size etc., as the UV-5G Plus. Version 1 - Multi Band FM radio 76-108 MHz; AM aviation frequency band: 108-136MHz (RX) VHF1: 144-148MHZ (RX&TX) ; VHF2: 200-260MHz (RX) UHF1: 430-440MHz (RX&TX) ; UHF2: 350-390MH2 (RX) Version 2 - Tri Band 136-174 / 220-260 / 400-520MHz The larger capacity battery is a bonus, although the radio may consume more power due to the larger colour display. Despite the voice announcements sounding a little fuzzy, the received audio quality is excellent. AM reception is exceptionally good, as with my Icom set. unlike the Qaunsheng...

The 1-pack does not come with the longer whip antenna or the programming cable. If people really want that stuff, they're probably better off buying the 2Pac. Oddly enough, that's cheaper than buying the 1-pack and a separate programming cable and knock-off Nagoya antenna.

Keep in mind that if you're totally unfamiliar with GMRS, it's a learning curve for sure. Don't rush the process. Also, line of is important. In one direction from our house, I can barely get a mile. Other direction and its razor sharp at 2+ miles. My wife thought I had come back home and was playing a trick on her. Bigger antennas make a difference in distance! Enjoy.

Randy, have you messed with the 5RM yet? It looks exactly like the one you are reviewing now but the out power is rated at 10 watts. Its also "unlocked" and can TX on GMRS frequency. Wondering what does the firmware say with the radio off, hold down the PTT + 8 button, and turn the radio on.

***UPDATE*** Hey Maha-Randbo, I finally received my radios. I'd pretty much figured out the basics by the time they got here, just by watching your videos. And yes, I did RFD...and even found a mistake in the programming section! I'd done a lot of research on these things and I decided on these as an entry-level radio for my wife and I. They were cheap but surprisingly well built. My first setting was the Roger Beep😂..too bad they don'thave a marker tone. We plan to add radios to our Ranger and other vehicles in the not so distant future. There ARE some sad hams, unfortunately. I do not yet have my GMRS license and when I tried for a radio check in my local area, all I got was sarcasm...but I know the radio was 10-2! Keep up the good work. It's helping me navigate a very confusing market to find what I need. You da man El Rand-bo! PS: We like the Rush Limbaugh references in your vids too;)

I have never seen this radio, partly because it has not been built. I ordered a pair on Amazon 12/20/23 and was informed that I could expect the delivery (wait for it) Feb. 04-14, 2024. That is 45-55 days. I can't cancel because my other items don't add up to $35 so I'd have to pay shipping. In 45 days this could be obsolete and replaced by a different model. Perhaps I should have suspected an issue when the Baofeng store itself had none of these. I suspect the labor market is very tight in China and it's hard to find people willing to work . . . .

Randy - get with the program! Spurious emissions on the Baofeng , though not perfect, has been minimized greatly since 2020. Sure - the UV-5R is a Ham Radio, but its sister Radio (the GT-5R by BaoTech(?)) has been improved greatly to have near zero spurious emission in late 2019, and that improvement has been brought over to the newer UV-5Rs and other sisters radios. This new UV-5G+ should have near zero spurious emissions like the others. So anyone bitching about spurious emissions on any UV-5R after 2020 needs a serious grade. But this has been in the Ham Radio videos for much of this year. Great video as always. And great review of the radio.

Hi Randy, I ordered the two pack from Amazon on December 3rd and I might not receive it until the 16th of January. Radiodiddty is the supplier so they might be out of stock. All of my Baofeng radios have worked very well.

Amazon US has the Baofeng GM-5RH GMRS radio. It appears to be identical to the UV-5G Plus with the addition of a desktop charger. I have both radios ordered.

Looking through the manual I can't get it to only monitor 1 band. I tried menu 7 and no luck still shows 2 bands. I know it was in one of your videos

Great timing. I came across that radio last weekend while cruising down the Amazon. Do you have any feelings for the GM-15. I have a single, UV-5R but have been thinking about adding to my repertoire of radios in case I ever get a friend. And to have a friend, you need 2 radios so I want to be ready in case he doesn't have one of his own. It's slick that these new radios don't need a separate charging cradle. Just a USB cable to go into the batteries.

How in the hell do you set the password for power on? I can turn the feature on but no where on the radio itself or in chirp can I find where to change or set the password so it's a default 0000000

I love the USB-C charging option, but will look for a model with somilar power levels without all the buttons as our camp hosts do not need anything to adjust more than the volume control. Obviously that limits us to programing via Chirp, but for me to have to explain any of the cool functions of this particular radio will be way over the heads of our camp hosts. They already have had to learn enough for the pay they receive. Cheers, Davey

I think the Radioddity GM-N1 would be perfect for you, channel knob and volume, PTT, 2 watts.

I’ll have to look into the specifics of this model but I imagine you’re able to lock everything but the PTT just like other models. I think it leaves a few basic functions available besides PTT, but you’re able to set it up ready to hand to a complete amateur, show them the big button and set them free without worrying they’ll disable everything once they turn around and start playing with it. Just some food for thought, if you otherwise do like what you see in this unit.

I've watched a few of your videos and I've just subscribed to your channel. I'm interested into getting into GMRS radios, I'm probably going to get one or two of the ever popular Baofeng radio(s) to play around with, but I'm also wondering if GMRS radios can also use FRS channels.
