I went to primary school with a Baptist who told me that his faith was founded by John the Baptist and my faith was invented because he hadn’t read about John the Catholic in his bible… at age 7 I thought this was a compelling argument and it troubled me for many years.

hey Chandler! i followed the baptist church for a bit - but then discovered that it wasn't keeping the Lord's Commandment in Exodus 20:8-11 the Lord's day is actually the 7th day Sabbath - not sunday. sunday 'keeping' is a creation of the papacy, not God. thanks for reading. James 2:14-26 My brothers, what benefit is there if someone claims to have faith, but he does not have works? How would faith be able to save him? Help me understand something please. You believe anybody can get saved. So do I. But what do you mean by saved? That is, how do you define "saved"?

@@m4641 All I know to say is my own salvation testimony. On Friday, June 16, 2006, when I was 9 years old, the Lord saved my soul. I'd been told all my life that the Bible was true and that there would come a time when I became “lost”, separated from God because of sin, and that I should look to Jesus to save me, because He's the only one who could. Of course, I had no reason not to believe them, so I accepted that as true. That's what I call historical faith. It's the same faith that it takes to believe that Lincoln was the 16th president. You've been told that by credible sources, but you weren't there, so you basically just take their word for it. Historical faith is NOT enough to save you. On that Friday night in June of 2006, I played with my cousin at Church, literally missed the whole sermon, but I got too loud apparently, so my parents made me sit beside them. All I heard the preacher tell was a story about a man explaining salvation to his grandson. The man placed a worm on a flat stone, surrounded it with dead leaves and then lit them on fire. The worm crawled every way it could to escape the fire, but everything it tried just made it worse as it got closer to the fire. The worm eventually gave up and curled up in the middle, waiting to be consumed, but the man picked it up and turned it loose. Suddenly, I was the worm. Where there was once peace and completeness in my soul, there was now terror and a great absence. What was missing was my relationship with God. I had reached the age of accountability and was now lost, just like they said I would be. That was the first personal proof of it all, more than just believing what I was told, but experiencing it first hand. My initial response was to distract myself from the problem and think about other things like cartoons and action figures, anything else that a child can think of. But, just like the worm, that made it worse. I got closer to the flames, so to speak. Next, I simply said, “God please save me!” like I'd seen others do. No dice. I suppose I promised to do some great thing if God saved me, or maybe give up some sin, but I wasn't even aware of many sins back then. None of those things worked. It wasn't until I realized that I, like the worm, had no way of making an escape for myself other than relying entirely on the mercy of someone above it all, that it happened. In an act of what I call saving faith, I basically just gave up and asked God to either pick me up or let me burn up one. He picked me up. As quickly as they had appeared, all my troubles vanished. I had just gone through a spiritual transformation without leaving my seat beside my parents. No one but God and me knew it, and I didn't tell anyone. By all accounts, it was a pretty dry service that night, but that didn't stop God from saving me. In fact, I didn't tell anyone for 3 or 4 years. I did get baptized afterward, and I try to do right by God and my neighbors according to the Bible, what I call living faith, but my way into Heaven comes entirely from that one moment of saving faith. A biblical example would be David. He said the pains of Hell got hold upon him, but the Lord heard his cry and delivered him. He had no doubt that heaven was waiting for him either. When his son died, he said, “I can't bring him back to me, but I can go to be with him!” Getting saved that night was what made it all real to me. When I went from believing with the mind, simply because I was told to, to believing with the soul, because I received personal proof.

@@astutik8909 Even today people in the Med drink wine as it protects against typhus and other diseases. The people of Israel knew this. Grape juice did not protect from anything. I don't have time to go through all translations but William Tyndale and Martin Luther would not have access to the background knowledge we have today. But then again Baptists do not require advanced education for their ministers (though some have it).

I jokingly say I've been a Baptist longer than I've been a Christian, since I was born into a Baptist family, but got saved as a child (obviously some time after being born!). I grew up in a church that was part of the Conservative Baptists, and as a teen, we went to an Independent Fundamentalist Baptist church. My husband and I are part of the Southern Baptist Convention now. I've gleaned a lot from every church I've been part of. I have also been blessed by Christian friends from other denominations.

@@nurseactual what??? If you know North East India, there are about 5 to 6 million Baptist populations in the Northeast part of India, but all under different church organizations. We are tribals and we belong to the Mogoloid race, so Mainland Indians called us with racist slurs. Since India is huge in terms of population, although we are about 15 million populations, we hardly made it 1% of the entire population, and there are no representations in the mainstream media. We were converted into Christianity by America missionaries just about 100 years ago, and before that we were animist, we worshipped nature. You can check out Northeast India on youtube. And also the largest Baptist church in Asia is in the Northeast too, check it out

I would like to see one on “the way international” and their beliefs. Cause I joined their fellowship a couple times and now I just realized that they hold to some unorthodox doctrines. I think People should know more about this since there has been maybe only limited amount of videos about them. Steve Ray is an ex-Baptist pastor who was previously staunchly anti-Catholic. He used to train Baptists to convert Catholics. He is one of my favourite Catholic Apologists having written books and presented many times on his conversion story, theology and tours to the Holy Land. You can see a lot of his material on KZbin. He said he cried for the first 6 years of going to mass and receiving the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. Many Protestant theologians, scholars, pastors and the intellectually honest convert and they have such beautiful ferver when they do.

The fact that Jesus was baptized and that the first " converts " were Jews tells me that water is involved bc of long established Jewish purifying rituals and somehow ( the Bible is not clear on it ) it became baptism and , many believe , is necessary for the forgiveness of sin . I don't believe this . Surely Jesus had no sin . So why baptism for this reason ? I know that the Apostles ( Jews ) preached " believe and be baptized " but I wish it was explained more . Peace

Great video. There are many Baptist churches that are not congregational, however. I’m a pastor in a Southern Baptist Church in the city of Chicago, and we have been elder led for decades.

Elder led churches are still congregational polity. Congregational doesn't necessarily mean the congregation has voting authority, juat that there is no binding authority at a higher level than the particular church. So although the church is elder-led, there are no presbyteries or bishops who have authority over the congregation from the outside.

Worldwide, Catholic Churches hold the same service and beliefs and sacraments on any day of the week, month, and year, in any State or Country, it is the same worldwide except for language. Baptist churches are like Baskin Robins Ice Cream with 31 different flavors to choose from? How does anyone decide with Southern, Northern, Independent, Free Will, Regular, Cooperative, International, Colored, baptist, etc. or do they just jump around until finding the mix they like? Salvation isn't some kind of buffet.

Perhaps tying into the low liturgical side of things, baptists tend to believe in church autonomy: independent church bodies outrank the denomination. This leads to a lot of the diversity, as well as a tendency to split over axiomatic differences.

I was fortunate to grow up in a Southern Baptist church that taught excess or things that hurt your body was a sin. They never preached don't drink although many or some believed that. But unusual for the time they mentioned smoking and over eating, being a drunkard or slave to the drink, as issues. This was in the 1960s early 70s so a bit novel.

Once upon a time, a village or town starts with one Baptist church. Then, inevitably, they get into a impassable dispute that splits the congregation, and the half in the minority goes off to establish a new congregation (or the town gets so large it simply needs a second one in a different part of town). The original congregation is thus termed the First Baptist Church, the new one Second Baptist Church, and so forth. (Where I am, the Presbyterians use the same scheme). We dont have saints, so urban churches just started being numbered ordinally (and later by the name of the street they are on), and rural and suburban ones are often either named after the road they are on, or adopt biblical placenames (Bethel, Mt. Sinai, etc.) or terms.

I know someone that was a Baptist and changed religion after about 25 years. During the time he was a Baptist he said he was saved (even tried to make me convert). He is now an Agnostic (still a good person with the almost the same morals but his belief changed) . What does the word saved mean and is he still saved?

The idea of being "saved" in the New Testament has various temporal components: *Past Tense:* moving from a spiritual state of being "lost" and "dead" to a state of right relationship with God; this idea is often referred to as being "justified" - "For by grace you have been saved through faith" (Ephesians 2.8 NRSVUE). *Present Tense:* becoming more like Christ in mindset and behaviors through the guidance of the Holy Spirit; this idea is often referred to as being "sanctified" - "For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God" (1 Corinthians 1.18 NRSVUE). *Future Tense:* being rescued from a state of death and resurrected to a new life in the world to come; this idea is often referred to as being "glorified" - " But the one who endures to the end will be saved" (Matthew 24.13 NRSVUE). Baptists disagree on whether or not these three categories are divisible. In other words, can a person be saved (justified) without then being saved (sanctified) and ultimately saved (glorified)? Free Will Baptists would say that a person who has been justified can still reject sanctification and thereby not share in glorification. Other Baptist groups disagree. Reformed Baptists would say that a person who rejects sanctification never actually received justification. In other words, the person was a false convert--never saved in the first place. They insist that anyone who has been justified will necessarily endure in their faith to the end of their lives (as part of their sanctification) and thus be saved (glorified). Other Baptists disagree with both positions and suggest that a person who has been justified can be glorified even if the person was not sanctified. This position is sometimes called the "once saved, always saved" viewpoint. It is based on passages such as this one: - " If the work is burned up, the builder will suffer loss; the builder will be saved, but only as through fire" (1 Corinthians 3.15 NRSVUE). In the case of apostasy (total rejection of the faith), the members of the "once saved, always saved" group might take the same position of the Reformed Baptists and assume that the salvation process was never begun in the first place. Otherwise, they might predict that the person will eventually repent and return to the faith, possibly even as a deathbed confession. A smaller number might assume that the person will be saved regardless of future repentance, since the justification has already occurred and is irreversible.

Our origins are with the Anglican Puritans, but were influenced by the some of the Dutch groups early on. Here in the South, we have a historically Calvinist tradition in our congregations that may have been influenced by the large body of Scots-Irish settlers in the Appalachian region, and it makes sense because our language was definitely influenced by them. As for whether we are Calvinist or Arminian, that was largely determined by whether or not a congregation was made up of General Baptists or Particular Baptists. The early Calvinist Particular Baptists seem to have been in the majority, and the more mission-minded Arminian General Baptists were both less numerous and influential. Whichever side a Southern Baptist falls on, we are not likely to allow it to separate us. We generally allow theological liberty on that one issue, though we remain fixed on most others. Again, each congregation has its own mind and decides for itself. I love debating the merits of the doctrines of grace with my fellow Baptists from the Arminian side, even when it gets spirited - but the Moravians showed more wisdom when they said: In the essentials, Unity. In the non-essentials, liberty. In all things, love.

Can anyone provide insight into discipline in the Baptist churches? I once belonged to an American Baptist church. Yes, I now know that that is a pretty liberal Baptist denomination, but I didn't know it at the time, and the American Baptist churches in my area tend to be fairly conservative. Anyhow, there were a number of people in my church who had formerly been Oneness Pentecostals. After talking to them a bit more in-depth than the usual conversation on a Sunday morning, I realized that these people were still heretics insofar as the doctrine of the Trinity is concerned. I brought my concerns to the pastor, and he just brushed me off. It even got to the point where they ordained one of these folks to pastor another Baptist church--and he was still spouting the Oneness Pentecostal line! That really shook my faith in both that particular congregation and in the denomination in general.

Well, the wonderful thing about Baptist churches is that the individual congregation answers to no one. Perhaps the ABCUSA, SBC, or other Baptist denomination can kick a church out of the association (with no actual consequences beyond that), but otherwise, there's nothing to stop any Baptist church from bowing down to a golden calf if they so choose. You can't really have full religious liberty without religious heresy as an unfortunate byproduct.

Baptist churches are like Baskin Robins Ice Cream with 31 different flavors to choose from? How does anyone decide with Southern, Northern, Independent, Free Will, Regular, Cooperative, International, Colored, baptist, etc. or do they just jump around until finding the mix they like? Check out Baptist Freedom of Conscience or Soul Competency, for the reason why Baptist church leadership does not generally condemn people unless what they are doing is unequivocally against scripture, this sometimes results in heretics getting a free pass if the elders are not theologically literate.

In the original Baptist confessions, discipline is taken very seriously. They didn't go so far as some anabaptists did, with shunning and such, but early Baptists did practice excommunication. That church's failure to uphold proper doctrine and discipline is troubling and isn't what Baptists _should_ be, just in the same way that the SBC's failure to deal with pedophiles in its midst is shameful and contradictory to their identity as part of the body of Christ. Now that the SBC has confessed its sins, though, hopefully we'll see its reform movement produce fruit.

I don't know what i am. Could someone please help me? Backstory: I did not grow up with religious parents or in a religious country (even though christian traditions such as christmas, easter etc are celebrated here). I've struggled with mental health issues since childhood and i have always felt pretty lonely, so i turned to religion to relieve some of my anxiety and also to feel like i'm a part of something. Telling myself that everything happens for a reason and that it's Gods plan has helped me alot anxiety-wise and wearing my cross makes me feel less lonely, it feels good to believe that someone is watching over me and my close ones and keeping us safe. However, i am not baptised and i do not go to church and did not grow up doing that. I would like to, but i am too anxious to go alone even though theres a church in my neighbourhood (a beautiful cathedral church). I do have a bible that i try to read as often as possible and i am still learning how to pray correctly (i'm planning on adding things like thanking God for the food everytime i eat and things like that). Sometimes i feel like an impostor since i have a hard time believing some of the most important things in christianity, like for example believing in hell (i'll explain in a minute) so now i am wondering if there is a protestant denomenation i fit into, and i need anyones help. Based on my believes that i list below, what kind of christian ''branch'' would fit me? My beliefs: - I believe in science, but i let religion answer the parts of science and evolution that i have a hard time understanding. - I believe that everything happens for a reason and that every person in your life comes with a lesson. - I STRONGLY believe that God cannot control everything, and that we as human beings have a choice to be good or bad. - I believe that if you always do your best and try to be kind to others, you will be rewarded someday. When, where and how is unkown but you will be rewarded. If you hurt others knowingly, kill and hate, karma will come and bite you in your ass. Again; When where and how is unkown but it will happen. - I don't believe in heaven or hell, atleast not the stereotypical heaven or hell. But if there is a hell, i only think the worst of the worst will go there. I'm talking about terrorists, rapists, mass shooters, people like Hitler etc. I really do not believe that drug dealers or robbers will end up there, especially not if they're doing it to feed their family. - I sin without feeling bad. I drink, i smoke and i have premarital sex, and i think that is fine. I strongly believe the saying ''God hates the sin but loves the sinner'' and i think that if you truly try to be a kind and helpful person, drinking, having sex and smoking really does not matter (as long as it's not hurting others)

I believe there is just two catigories, the believers and nonbelievers. Believers are people who have accepted Jesus into their heart and asked him to save them. I reccomend you try to go to an evangelical or baptist church so maby they could help you understand that there is a heaven and hell and that not just the horrible horrible people like hitler will go to hell. I believe that most catholics are going to hell as well because they are trusting faith and works and the bible says "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. Not of works, least any man should boast" It it also says for all haved sinned and fall short of the glory of God which means that even if you didn't do anything "that bad" it you still fall short and will go to hell. but thankfully the Romans 10:9 says "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." My advice to you for now is to ask a baptist pastor about it. It may be scarry at to do, but your eternity depends on it. I used to be a catholic, but then God came into my heart and I now know I am on my way to heaven.

It is good that you are reading your Bible when you can and trying to learn more things such as prayer. You should keep on doing these. However, you also need to talk to a Christian minister or leader and share your story so that you could receive more help in being guided in your relationship with Christ. Keep praying and try visiting different churches with an open mind, humble spirit. Let the words of the Bible help confirn if the church you are visitng is truly doing its best to follow Christ. Also see what kind of lives and actions the people in the church are doing to know if they truly know God. May our Lord speak and protect you as you do all of these.

First of all, getting water baptized only gets you wet and believing in Jesus mean very little. Satan himself believes in Jesus, we're to believe "ON" Jesus, trusting that His shed blood paid for your salvation. Read Galatians 5: 2 and substitute circumcision with water baptism.

I was an Anglo-Catholic who had just finished the Roman RCIA initiation course but from attending mass, studying church history, the roman interpretation of scriptures, studying the magisterium and statements of the popes against the word of God, I left and have not looked back. About the in betweens. As an Arminian, I find it weird that though Southern Baptists and Independent Baptists believe the same that a Christian can't fall away; I find it weird how usually Southern Baptists are more accepting of Arminians/Methodists and think that believing you can fall away is either a minor or non issue among Christians. On the other hand, Independent Baptists often attack Arminians/Methodists more and some go as far as to say an Arminian is not even saved.

I feel you need giving more clarification to that. Baptism encourage reading and exploring, and people tend to choose things that they like more, so it is more about interpretation Calvinism or Arminianism, etc. A stumbling point for centuries now.. Traditions are developed depending on the culture, like in Russian Orthodox church they have eggs colored for Easter, and in American protestant a lot still have XMas tree, both of each are pagan traditions. Btw, Shiites also have colored eggs for Nauryz, but Sunnie that looks blasphemous. Just cultural features shouldn't be attributed to the denomination. I know a lot of preachers are against easter eggs, Xmas trees, and so on, but marketing is strong drive everywhere. So, I encourage you to focus on the doctrines, otherwise I feel your other videos might be flawed. All the blessings to you in your journey. 🙏
