Having different hobbies is always a great way to live happily. Hobbies have become variously popular nowadays than in 2000. Travelling and sports have widely increased among people in the present time, which signals how broadly people are interested in these types of hobbies. However, reading and walking have not gained the same popularity among respondents since 2000. In 2000, walking was the dominant hobby for most people, with 35% of walking lovers. Whereas sports and travelling almost came in second place with 25% of respondents leaving reading to be the least preferable hobby with only 15% of readers. Nowadays, sports and travelling have primarily topped the chart with 40% indicating how many people actually prefer them. In contrast, walking and reading have been experiencing a low rate of popularity, with just 12% and 8% respectively. It shows a dramatic change over time, resulting in how people's hobbies are constantly changing. Thank you Chris so much for such a useful lesson. This is my sample writing, if you could just have a quick look at it, I will be grateful. Thanks in advance.
@EpixHDTV2 жыл бұрын
I am not Chris, obviously, but just giving you my two cents based on Chris's tips. You should stick to the task asked to be completed in the writing test. Here the task was to 1). summarize the information, 2). selecting and reporting the main features/trends and 3). make comparisons where relevant. Adding personal opinions may not help but might hinder the completion of your main task. As to the particular choice of words used in the writing, some places are a bit redundant or imprecise sounding . For example, ." Traveling and sports have increased....", ".....have not gained the same popularity.....", "how people's hobbies are constantly changing", etc. seem imprecise. Redundancy or repetitiveness is evident with " It shows a dramatic change ....... constantly changing.", etc. Just something to consider when you do a real test. Good luck.

One thing that I've noticed in this video is that, you've very well omitted using a lot punctuation (especially commas). Like, there are a lot of places where you can add a few commas in the essay. Is it good to reduce the amount of commas. Also, would you recommend writing long sentences (with a lot of connectors and punctuation) or, just keeping the sentences short and increasing their number.

Thank you for sharing this video. I find it interesting that vative speakers also need to put some efforts to construct the sentences. I always thought you guys will just write it without even thinking, and my efforts while wriiting is indicating my English is not good enough. Your video somehow boosted my confidence that I am experiencing a similar problems (efforts and a little bit struggle) like native speakers do. However, I'm doubting if to your writing sample is grammatically correct because of one sentence you used "traveling and sports both became XXX and are now XXX". Wouldn't it be better if you insert "they" before the verb "are"? Also, I think there should be a comma between two independent clauses? since you mentioned it's a compound sentence. Please let me know if my understanding is correct or wrong? Thank you.
@brendabrenda80742 жыл бұрын
I'm not a native speaker here but IMHO, there's nothing wrong with "traveling and sports both became XXX and are now XXX" and no need to add "they" before "are" because the conjunction "and" here connects two verb phrases together.

I would recommend covering the key features by spotting the drastic changes or differences in the graph then make a short summary or simply finding what the figures share in common.

After looking at the graph it is evident that in 2000, both traveling and sports made up a quarter of total favourite hobbies. Although, today, the percentage of these two hobbies is equal, the proposition have increased by 15 percent; thereby making them most popular pass time activities. Further graph shows that fifteen percent of individuals used to enjoy reading in 2000. However, its popularity has scaled down in present time, only eight percent of people take it as a main hobby which makes it least popular nowadays. Similarly, in 2000, writing was one of the most preferable pass time activities, with 35 percent while, currently, it is merely chosen by twelve percent of individuals.
