I still miss everything Bourdain deeply. There will be no one as charismatic, shrewd, open-minded, progressive, discriminate and all-seeing, proud yet humble. witty and wise as him. It pains me to hear his voice to this day. No one else could close to him.
@MitchMunchies15Ай бұрын
I revere him, but at the same time his own artistry was his Achilles heel. He never had anyone to fall back on and as such his habits became his crutches. He is a lesson in humanity but not a lesson in humility. He never once said "I'm not okay". It takes a certain kind of grit to deny your situation rather than embrace it. He had massive amounts of integrity but he desperately needed help. He lived in a faux environment where a great artist must be a tortured one, and fortunately that's not true in the modern world. He should still be exploring as he did. What I wouldn't give to have a meal, a joint and a beer with him.
@s1dew1nd3r44 күн бұрын
@@MitchMunchies15 he did reach out though, he just decided to not act on the help that was offered to him - watch David Choe on Joe Rogan - he breaks down talking about Bourdain about how he called him and asked him if he suffered etc even though they had money and fame etc.

Bourdain asking if things will be OK for his daughter’s life in 10 years is all kinds of heartbreaking for a variety of reasons. Obama’s response is so comforting and hopeful that it makes the moment even more tragic now knowing what’s coming. Wish they would have included the opening sequence of Obama arriving at the restaurant, cause it was badass in that very specific way that only Bourdain & his original crew could have conjured. Also, in the years that have passed I still often think about the interview with the woman that closes this episode. It might be the most moving images and words that the show ever put together.

This is the first video with Anthony in it that I've watched since he died, he was such a huge part of my life and after he was gone, it was just too hard to think about. But after having also lost some friends, I realize that it really isn't going to stop hurting, and that's just something that you have to live with. Your memory of the person and how much you celebrate them is really what they left for you, and in that context Anthony gave us all so much. Just because he's gone now doesn't change who he was, and I'm glad I watched this video.

Absolutely beautiful piece. It's more sad and poignant now given how as a country we are turning in more. Not just distrusting people in other countries but distrusting fellow Americans. So many of us live in fear of those different than us and believe that we are being invaded and overrun. I've had Bun Cha in Hanoi and I've had it in Houston, in Minneapolis and San Francisco. It is good in all those places and our country is better for it that we embrace those differences even from former enemies than fear it.

I stayed at a hotel around the corner. While they filmed this episode. I went there the next night. Bourdain was big on showing the local cuisine. Not the best, but what the typical meal to local patron is like. I went to a Bahn Mi store in Hoi A that Anthony went to on a Cooks Tour. There were lines out the door for a mediocre sandwich. They couldn’t keep up the quality anymore. In later tv shows. He stopped giving out the names of the restaurants. He realized what he was doing to mom & pop places. That just being on tv was ruining the restaurants with overcrowding. The demand was too high. So the quality was thrown out the window.
