I wish my ESP was a dedicated espresso grinder. It really needs more settings for someone like me, who enjoys both darker roasted more traditional espresso including robusta blends and lighter roasted more modern blends. If I have the shims set for lighter roasts I can't grinder coarse enough for a darker roast without getting into the filter settings, where the steps are too big. As such I have to run darker roasts at one dose and lighter at another. In which case lighter roasts hover around the 8-10 mark and darker around the 17-19. As an aside, flavor wise I still really like my ESP. It gives shots with way more body than any of my hand grinders. Way, way more. As always, I enjoyed the video, thank you for putting the time into it.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I like the ESP too. Another option is the DF54 which gives much better granularity, but is more cumbersome with the singe dosing...

@@TomsCoffeeCorner Thanks, Tom. I already do the single dose thing as I switch coffee and grind size a few times a day for different drinks, coffees and people, lol. Honestly, I'm still considering a Niche even though it is out of favor at the moment. Basically, it improves on everything the ESP does, in theory. But I have a hard time upgrading things that simply work.

That’s so strange, my dark roasts are dialed in at about 2-4. Are these numbers from after you added the shims?
@kitcraft95162 ай бұрын
@chianti95 No, without.
@chianti952 ай бұрын
@@kitcraft9516 hmmm. I think I’ll add the shims and see if that puts it back into spec. Thanks! ( They say as you use it the grind fluctuates so users may need to make it finer, and I’m already at the low end of the scale). I’m using a bottomless porta filter … the high performance basket requires an even finer grind so I went back to the “normal” non pressurized one and #2 setting seems in the target range.

I have the OG Encore. I did two mods, I changed out the m3 burrs with the new m2 as well as a simple internal adjustment that gives a much better range so now works great for espresso. I also added bellows for single dosing.

interesting, I got an Encore a few months before the ESP came out. The switch on the side is like the ESP, it also doesn't whine and sounds more like the ESP but the wing nut and burr looks like the original Encore.

I use the newer one and for my Moka pot go midway on the white line or just a few ticks right (coarser). Also, I have the single hopper which is great. I use the larger catch cup for the milk in the microwave before foaming.

I have yet to try out the single dose hopper, but I'd like to.

The review doesn't even mention retention, which is weird for a grinder review. I have the ESP version, and the retention is considerable. Fortunately, you can buy an aftermarket bellows that works very well. Baratza also offers a single dose hopper for an additional cost.

What is the cheapest grinder I can possibly get that is decent? 😅 I’m overwhelmed by the possibilities. I have a Dedica Arte 885 machine and would like some simple grinder that would upgrade my coffee taste. I was thinking about Dedica KG521M, but I’m not sure.
@khymesound3 ай бұрын
I upgraded an original Encore that was very generously gifted to me, with the M2 burr the ESP uses as well as fine calibration & a double precision detent peg- and unfortunately even then it's not what I'd recommend for espresso. I could pull shots with the last 1-2 settings, but not really adjust them at all. The non-linear precision on the ESP that makes it move less in the espresso range hopefully helps address this, though with options like the DF54 near the same price it's a hard sell!
@TomsCoffeeCorner3 ай бұрын
I like the ESP for doing multiple drinks though. The DF54 is better in all ways, but single dosing gets cumbersome if you're doing it repeatedly. At least that's how I feel.

@@TomsCoffeeCorner I believe something better than the DF54 DF64 has arrived-the Shardor 64mm. You should test it and compare it with the Encore ESP and the DF to see what you find out. I've been using it for 3 weeks so far, and I'm impressed. I think it could be the new budget king. Can’t wait for a video review about it!

Tom, can you recommend Encore ESP for Delonghi EC685? (I mean for original portafilter, not bottomless). Or better Graef CM702?

Tom, is there a way to know how much you are grinding, for example if you just want 15g ground and no more?
@TomsCoffeeCorner3 ай бұрын
I just count to 10, and that gives me 15-16 grams.
@harteclan3 ай бұрын
Presumably you could just measure 15g of beans then grind them all through - haven't watched the whole video yet, so did Tom talk about retention after grinding?
@chianti953 ай бұрын
@@harteclanI do this. Measure out 15 g, spritz the beans and shake. Grind the beans. Very little retention. I added a third party bellows to push out any excess, but I’m not getting much “extra” from them. So far, I’m pleased with the grinder, even if it is too loud to use before 8 am :)

I recently bought the ESP and with fresh beans I still need to go down to 2 or 4 to get close to the correct grind size. I’m not sure if it’s a calibration issue or if I should add the extra shims to enhance the espresso range. Using dark roast Guatemalan coffee with a two to three weeks ago roast date. For my deLonghi, I put a 51mm stainless steel catch cup inside the larger plastic one that comes with the baratza so I can transfer the grounds to the portafilter basket without spilling. So far I’ve been grinding single doses with the big hopper - not sure it’s worth getting the smaller attachment as this is working without excessive retention. I do spritz the beans and use a third party bellows to flush remaining grinds. My only question is, is it worth adding the shims to give myself extra leeway at the finer end. When I take it apart to clean more thoroughly, I suppose that would be the best time to add them. So far, I’m enjoying the machine and, while noisy, it’s not excessively so. I probably should have gotten the DF54, but I had a gift certificate at a store which did not carry it, and at the time I thought I might want to grind larger quantities occasionally. Up to now, that hasn’t been the case. If I have company, I tend to use my lavazza pod machine which takes less than a minute per (tasty) cup, or a moka pot vs the fussier espresso machine with a longer interval required between cups. This grinder and the inexpensive deLonghi have been good choices for an espresso newbie like me.
