At the end of the day a nation as small as barbados is always going to be beholden to someone, either through trade or strategic influences. Much as i support the rights of all countries to determine their own future at the end of the day there is no such thing as true independence for a nation as small as barbados. Such countries are too small to truly define their future in the way they want, literally nobody gets that luxury, even Britain. Out of all the forces that strive for influence in foreign countries i would argue the commonwealth at least acknowledges more about their history than anyone else would care to do. Interesting that the decision was not made through a national referendum but rather, by a few self serving politicians. Lord knows what the Island will gain from having an elected President as their head of State as that person will ONLY represent the people who elected him/her. The Governor General was the perfect form of Democracy, representing the Queen and in turn, all people of Barbados without any political ambition. The problem is that so many British people have very strong ties to the Caribbean and we take it for granted that those ties will remain. Logically it's understandable but logistically, we lose those ties because we no longer have the same head of state. My fear is that the Caribbean islands will become 'foreign countries' instead of 'my friends house'.

@ Barbados is the same as every Commonwealth Realm including the UK. We all have a Constitutional Monarch which, as archaic as it sounds, actually works because the government always has a higher authority to keep them in check because the monarch still carries reserve powers ad heat of state. Barbadians obviously don't have a British passport and Britons don't have Barbadian passports. But like every other Realm, it's not really an issue for immigration except Australia where it's hard to completed, even if you're British. The real issue is our family's in the Caribbean. it's a complicated situation The Queen of f England} is also The Queen of Barbados, l

@mc love me Not really. Wouldn't "put the wiillies up" us at all! Why would it? Your arrogance in thinking that England becoming independent would somehow scare us is underscores one of the reasons as to why we wish to break political ties. This unfair union has to go as Westmonster (sic) have obviously no intention whatsoever of revamping and reforming the union that it becomes a fair one.

@@andrewjones-productions it's because of people like you that I want England out of this union.
