This video is spot on! Everyone knows the likes, but the dislikes were on point too. The customer service thing is a real problem, and I'm from there! There's almost a sense of resentment from some of those in the service industry, like they have a chip in their shoulder. Bajans need to understand that with more competition now, their friendliness is their meal ticket.

Not sure how more competition effects it. Great serving skills and they could make some serious coin on the island. Perhaps owners and managers might try leading by example, earning the right to demand professionalism, but $$$ is still the best incetive...THEN it would be competitive!

I don't think that's a fair response. No need to put on a show but you should be friendly and approachable when you are serving people food and so that they will come back to your business. I don't want a stranger who is mad at me handling my food. No one wants to go eat at a restaurant where the staff acts as though you are a burden. Hey Liz..bang on description of my fav island ever. Yup service is usually great or terrible with little standards to balance it out, but saying that, I have never been to a Caribbean island that is as polite and proper as BDS. Maybe it's British occupancy (and it's influence still) brought an old world English attitude that actually blends well with the Island smoothness. The majority of populated areas are very safe to walk at night but like anywhere, best to walk smart (couples/groups) and think safe. There are so many new places since you posted this review like Nikki Beach Club in Speighstown which is a chic daytime lunch, chill mixed with beachfront. New restaurants are popping up every year with Salt Cafe on Rockley (Accra) beach being a personal fav as the chef and owner was a longtime big hotel chef and decided to move to her own small and intimate place creating amazing unique dishes. I am returning for my 6th or 7th visit in 2019 and am excited to see what changes have happened to the island since my last trip. Keep up the great reviews and keep digging deeper.

Is there an abundance of organics on the Island? I don't go out to eat much anymore, prefer to do my own cooking. Occasionally I will go out to eat. Thanks again Liz.
@LizNeptune7 жыл бұрын
Lol it sounds vicious but they were playing... I would say the buses run "regularly" depending on where you are. I've heard many stories about waiting for a bus that never comes (like in the country or in the night like 9 or 10). Fortunately I'm on the south coast aka a very commercial part of the island so there is a lot of public transportation. You'll have a lot of opportunity to get food and veggies to cook for yourself! However whether it's organic or not, I'm not sure. It's not like in the states where things are labeled and certified. I see things marked as "imported" but not organic. Who knows where that sh*t comes from?! I'm also almost certain Barbados has worked out a deal with the devil um.. I mean Monsanto, the world's biggest GMO seed provider.

I went to a restaurant and sat there for 15 minutes, before my order was taken, than after waiting 30 minutes for my food, I lost my patience and left. In another bar, I waited 45 minutes for a hamburger. No one should EVER have to wait THAT long at a restaurant. Than in other places they were rushing us to finish our meal, to make room for other customers, and they seemed to get annoyed if you only ordered one thing. Locals not wanting to give you your change is also an issue. We practically had to BEG for it and in Oistins us and another couple waited 30 minutes for our change, and at Carlisle Beach, we were told we have to drink our beers on the beach, because the restaurant is only for people who order food, even though the place was completely empty. And at the same beach, I stood at a bar for 10 minutes wanting to order a drink, being completely ignored by the waitress, before I finally got fed up and left. To be honest, these experiences ruined the whole island for me, as this behavior came across as extremely rude to me. I also didn't like that people were asking for money for everything and were paranoid about having their picture or video taken, even if they were just in the background. I also agree about the island being ridiculously expensive. It's the most expensive place I've ever been. Maybe because of its status as a British commonwealth. I didn't have an experience like you had with the bank. One lady even reopened a store for us after it closed. I agree 100% with your LOVES, but the island also has it's downside. But I am glad people are starting to wake up and realize that customer service on the island is something that needs to be improved. I get the whole island time mentality, but I agree that if they want to build a strong tourist economy, they need to dump certain aspects of their lifestyle and adjust themselves to cater to the needs of tourists, or that part of the island's economy will collapse.

I'm sorry it was ruined for you, but it's understandable. There are some people that give good customer service, but maybe you didn't get a chance to explore all that much. Sometimes the customer service, or slow moving service gets excessive beyond what is acceptable... they know it though. And I think it will get better. Someone seeing your comment might help people be more patient and attentive next time they go to work.. thanks for watching!!

I had some good customer service, but it was rare. And that's the thing, it got to the point that it just became unacceptable. Hopefully it will, but the last time I posted negative comments about the islanders, I was immediately attacked by both locals and tourists who LOVE the island and accused me of making this stuff up. But other tourists I talked to on the island felt the same way I did. But judging by the comments here, I guess people are starting to realize these aren't isolated incidents.

So sorry you had a bad experience on your vacation. We visit Barbados about once a year and have not had any negative experiences. Last year, I became impatient waiting to be seated in one of the hotel restaurants and decided to leave as I was quite hungry, the concierge asked us what happened as we were leaving, we explained about the long wait, and he immediately returned with us to the restaurant to speak with the manager. You know, There was a perfectly good example for the wait, except they did not inform us. The restaurant provides a personalized service to each customer and the food is freshly prepared. Sometimes there is a reason for the slow service. One, It's not McDonald's and two sometimes tourist need to check their attitude. I've seen tourist behave in ways in the Caribbean that they do not do in Europe. I have been appalled by some of the tourist attidudes especially when they treat service people as though they are less than.

briantravelman there is nothing wrong with our time you came to barbados for the experience and the time is part of it we go to work on time we go to appointments on time but parties dont start on time and its how we like it. If the boat say it leaving at 10pm then that mean it moving at 12-1 am if a party say 7pm then it starting 10 pm but im sorry about the customer service

I was home last August. Went to a shoe store for some shoes. I was completely blown away by the customer service l received from one young man working there. He was amazing! He was quick. He was polite. He smiled genuinely. I asked for the manager so that I could sing the young man's praises. Well, l sang his praises to the manager, and he was like...so? I was stunned. We really must do a better job of actually serving customers in Barbados. Remind fast-food joints that it's actually fast food they're serving. No pep in their step whatsoever. I should not have to wait 45 minutes for a meal in a fast-food restaurant. I let them have an earful on social media when l returned home.

I always find that visitors to the island enjoy it more than the locals (I live in Barbados), your video is pretty accurate including the dislikes. I guess the only update is the public transportation is trash.
@LizNeptune6 жыл бұрын
all the bajans keeps saying that but i don't think it's that bad lol on the south coast at least... saying this coming from having been places where public transportation is nonexistant. I guess if you're not on the south it's probably REaLLY bad!

This video was too funny. Especially when the dogs started to fight. I haven't been in so many years but I miss it terribly. I could eat flying fish and drink sorrel every single day! I loved CropOver. I had the best time. I'm looking to go in April for the reggae festival with Buju.

As an infrequent traveller to BDos, over 30 years, you're bang on with the likes/dislikes. With the exception of the Merrymen being no more, BDos hasn't changed in the last 30 years and as it works, its not likely to change in the next 30.

Just went there early June. Your likes and dislikes are true. I had some amazing customer service but some people act like they're dead and just going through the motions (which you will find on other Caribbean islands). Another Huge like are the Rum Shops! That Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum is incredible, smooth and like a cognac! I brought a lot back but wish I could get that here in the states. Great video!

I’m an American too. However living in the Bahamas for 7 months learned that the islands are just extremely laid back. There is NO URGENCY. 😂💛😂 Vacations state of mind naturally. I’ve been home for over a year and still don’t drive over 60 mph. 😉 so not necessarily customer service just PuR Vida ( Costa Rico)

I agree to an extent. Have you ever been to barbados? It's known for bad customer service. Being laid back is one thing, being rude/mean to customers is another.

It's ironic about customer service needing improvement in Barbados, as tourism is the #1 leading industry there. Barbados is a unique place to visit. Try to get off the beaten paths if possible to experience more of the personal culture.
