Just finding time to watch some very good interviews with Barbara Kingsolver about her most recent book. Its on the top of my list of books to get to -when I finally get moved back to a cottage and some small acreage in the region myself! The insights Barbara gives about the story will be enriching as I read it the first time! (I always reread stories I like ---AT LEAST twice. -So many insights in good stories, well written!) BTW, Barbara's PRODICAL SUMMER was the best story about Appalachian culture and it's underlying conflicts and strengths that I have read. I loved that there is an up- beat tone in the way the 3 entertwined stories are resolved through the best of southern community values! Thank you, Barbara

I loved this book. Really really loved it. But I’m sorry my favourite is still Prodigal Summer and I can’t shift that. Demon is beautifully written and a total page turner and really awakening and educational. But of course it’s gruelling because the subject she’s highlighting is a sad one and David Copperfield suffers a great deal before the resolution. Whereas PS is pure, perfect escapism and beauty, where the less attractive characters’ layers fall away and each one improves upon knowing them better. DC maybe my second favourite now though ❤

Wonderful book. And fascinating discussion with insights from ms kingsolver. One part is a problem for me and my little brain. I just can’t go along with her conclusion that the people -rural and Appalachian, have been forgotten and are uncared about by politicians. The democrats have worked hard to make things better for all and especially those that have no access to healthcare, childcare, quality education, even broadband. Dems have tried to help. No they aren’t perfect but the republicans are successful in rural areas despite the fact that they do zero to make the lives of those folk any better.

Healthcare is more than Obamacare/access to insurance. How do you find a doctor or a hospital when there are none where you live? Or, you have no car to drive to where those services exist? I'm a democrat and I think I know what Kingsolver is saying about class. Where I grew up there was one hospital and few doctors in the entire county. My mother died after being told she had the flu at that hospital. Two hours after leaving the hospital she died from the heart attack she was having. My father died of lung cancer. An X-Ray of his chest (done at the same hospital) showed a mass in his lung, but the radiologist didn't seem to see it. I grew up in the foothills of the Appalachians in southern Ohio.

Horrible experiences. I’m so sorry. What you say is absolutely correct. But my point still stands- though not all problems are easily solvable, the democrats are the only party that is interested in attempting to solve the problems experienced every day in Appalachia. And residents there steadfastly refuse to vote for democrats. Such a shame.

@Paulinrnke You are preaching to the choir. I agree it seems my people are voting against their own self interests, but this is more about emotion than political policy and programs. Little of either has trickled down from D.C. to be recognizable as bona fide help. Where I grew up, unemployment rate is 25%. There's no high speed internet, no hospital maternity ward within 25 miles, no trusting politicians. You believe they should be grateful to a political party? They like the orange Q tip because he's NOT a politician and he expresses their anger and any change might be better than none.

Please explain. I’m interested in hearing your thoughts. (I’m not sure she is asking to “represent”. But she is an expert. And she’s a native. And it’s ok that different residents draw different conclusions. )
