The movie ended up being not anything near what I was anticipating or imagining, and I wasn’t disappointed. Not gonna say it’s the best horror movie I’ve seen, but I was surprised by its effectiveness. Nothing was particularly nightmare inducing, but it’s how the themes and situations were laid out that gets you to think about how disturbingly real they can be. Some complained about certain things not shown or explained, but I appreciate that the film didn’t go there with showing anything exploitive. You don’t need to see any visual proof because the origin of what caused the situation to be what it was is clear and something that happens in real life. For me it’s just the knowing that this is more possible than ghosts or a parasitic twin in the back of your head that made the film visceral.

I loved the movie, but I noticed that the audience score for this was only 71% RT. I'm guessing some people felt it was disorganized and didn't provide all the answers to their questions. I strongly disagree it was structured that way purposely to keep the audience intrigued. The movie plays out like an adventure with different twists and turns and if they were paying attention most of the questions were answered. But it left a little bit of mystery which I loved too.

But I was never impatient to get back to where it left off, it was just so tasteful and well executed. ***SPOILERS*** My biggest problems with this movie are the mother. 1, I think we saw too much of her on screen. You can make the argument that it was a way to humanize her and show that she’s more caring than a lot of people in the movie, but I feel like her mystique vanished really fast for me. 2, all she is, is a baby born from incest. How is she surviving being crushed by a car, falling off a water tower. How is she ripping someone’s arm off and blasting through a wall. How is she splitting a skull with her bare hands. These are all things that wouldn’t bother me as much in other movies, but it seems like this movie was well thought out, only the have the last act have all these things that don’t make sense. Also if she’s a baby born from incest, and she’s been around for 40 years, and she’s a “copy of a copy of a copy, how does that make sense time wise

We had technical difficulties in our cinema but it made the movie experience even better! The film paused and the whole cinema (which wasn't too many so it felt intimate and nice because it felt like we could bond together more closely) was so confused if it was a part of the film, then after 5 mins we realized it wasn't so we all had a good laugh 😂 BUT THEN!! On top of that, the lights didn't come on at then end of the film, and again we weren't sure if it was a part of the film, so we stayed and watched the full credits anticipating a jump scare and then we had a laugh about it when it was over haha. I think the screenings of the movie should totally do this!! It was hilarious and so enjoyable! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time so the break when the movie paused, and they had to fix it which took about 15mins, was actually so good because it gave me time to take many deep breaths 😅😩 I'm still recovering though from how good it was!! imo - also the manager of the theatre told us never in her career had something like this happened before, it was so odd haha

SPOILERS!!! I thought it was a horrible idea to kill off Keith half an hour into the movie and replace him with AJ, to the point where it essentially ruined the rest of the movie for me. I loved the chemistry between Tess and Keith because at first they were both extremely skeptical of each, but throughout the first half hour they start to trust each other more and open up. As soon as Keith died, there’s an entire 20 straight minutes dedicated to someone who’s never been introduced before and on top of that is incredibly unlikeable throughout the entire movie. I think it would’ve been much more beneficial story-wise to keep Keith alive and not have AJ in the movie at all. This way, the story wouldn’t come to a grinding halt for 20 to 30 minutes introducing a new character and when Tess goes back to save Keith near the climax of the movie, she would have a reason to go back and help him aside from “there’s a man down there who’s in danger”.
@johnliem77862 жыл бұрын
I thought it was clever how they tied AJ into the rest of the story, and I wish he had some redemption like the movie hinted at (in order for him to add something to the movie, but ultimately died anyway). But I agree, I liked their chemistry and wish they kept Keith alive
@LoXHumaN2 жыл бұрын
SPOILER. Naw if they kept Keith alive it would have played out just like any other stereotypical horror movie for the most part. The way they shifted the story after that was a great way of subverting expectations of what the movie was going to be. I was in disbelief Keith died and how they randomly started introducing this random character. He was a very campy character and I loved it and so did everyone else in the theater he got a lot of laughs. Great movie, only thing that I’d change is how the homeless man died although I get it was suppose to be outrageous and over the top, just thought he deserved better haha
@freshboyfab2 жыл бұрын
@@johnliem7786 After seeing it a second time yesterday, I’ve come to the conclusion that AJ had zero redeem qualities. He’s just a bad and ultra self absorbed man. His scene in the tower with the homeless man is important to understanding his motives. AJ is an actor. His entire speech there was not genuine. He was acting a part to set the foundation for his redemption story if he’s the one to go get help. Obviously it’ll get world wide attention and champion him as a hero and undoubtedly get his positive public image back.
@herosam13902 жыл бұрын
@@LoXHumaN I get that, and I do agree that Keith's death was shocking and that AJ got laughs (even out of me quite a bit), but for me it made the structure of the movie feel very unfocused and sloppy. I'm definitely in the minority with that opinion, but that's just how I personally feel about it :) Hell, I even plan on rewatching it when it comes out on Hulu or HBO Max to see if I missed why it works for most other people

Alright, I have to talk about the things I didn't like, because I really enjoyed this movie, but I felt it had the potential to be so much more and took the safe route instead. **MILD SPOILERS AHEAD** I loved how the film slowly escalated to a major scare and then abruptly cut away to something completely different storyline we hadn't seen yet, and it did that twice. It really hooked me in. The 3rd act under delivered for me as it essentially turned into a classic slasher/creature feature. **MAJOR SPOILERS** I think what could've elevated this film was essentially removing the homeless character scenes because he basically existed for nothing but exposition, and instead devoted a little more time to the scenes in the 80s and the scene with AJ and the old man. You could spend a little more time underground building up more tension and even adding more horror by spending a little more time with the snuff tapes and the women in cages in the flashbacks. It could've been even more disturbing while still leaving quite a bit to the imagination as they did. Once they escaped the house the scare factor disappeared, and aside from AJ tossing Tess off the tower, the rest of the movie was entirely predictable. Especially when The Mother killed the homeless guy. I knew exactly when she was going to break in and kill him. The characters also just made a few too many dumb decisions that pulled me out of it a bit, especially when Tess went into the tunnel after Keith without at least calling the police first, especially when she didn't even know him. Here's what I would've preferred at the end. AJ tossing Tess off the tower was great, but it would've been better if he had done it because he knew The Mother would save her and potentially kill herself. Then I would have AJ shoot the mother in the head right there. That would mean AJ survives, but it was just so dumb that he wouldn't even check to make sure The Mother was dead, and in that moment it would make more sense for him to shoot her. Either that or find a less obvious and more creative way to kill him off, then you can still have that moment where you actually kinda feel bad for The Mother as Tess kills her. That's just my opinion.

It starts very well, with the scenes from the trailer, those scenes that pulled us to watch this movie, we were quite hyped. But after the first act of the movie, the writers decided to mess up the whole thing. It's a shame, really, this had the potential to be one of the best horror movies of the last 5 years, but it's just another bad movie made by modern Hollywood. If you're wondering if this movie is free of political propaganda, I'm sorry to tell you, it's full of it (after the 1st act). I thought hollywood moved on from the "me too movement" after 4 years of movies and tv shows full of it, but it seems it's back. "Men, like, omg, do better" Anyway, the protagonist actress is very good, Bill's performance is amazing too (too bad his time is too short, I wonder why, since he's the best actor in the whole cast)... and that's it. A disappointing movie, full of plot holes. Bait and switch, basically. There's a reason why they only showed scenes from the 1st Act in the trailer, they knew no one would watch this movie if they showed the stupid useless scenes from the act 2 and act 3. Anyway, this is a Jordan Peele type of "horror" movie, watchable but weak and stupid. To anyone (like me) disappointed with this movie and left with a bad taste in their mouth after wasting 1h40m watching this, I recommend you watch (or re-watch) 10 Cloverfield Lane, a really good Horror movie, that has a really great female protagonist and evil men, but (surprise!) no political propaganda! Just pure entertainment. Have fun.

My take: really did not enjoy this movie tbh. I understood the message and don’t wanna spoil anything. But did not think monster was scary. Thought it was just weird and some of the cgi at times was iffy. Especially when it burst through the front door. Some cool shots… especially when the thing was clawing to get the character back when left the basement window. Thought bill was underused. Tess became a cliche horror movie character as soon as the film got swinging with said monster. Thought her renting a air b n b in the most run down part of Detroit REALLY took me out of the move. Like bruh… I get you can save a buck, but NOBODY would naturally say “yeah… lemme move into a bunch of crack houses and expect nothing bad to happen. When I’m isolated from police and all other locals”. Felt like a strange choice especially when the character seemed well off financially. With her new car and nice clothes. Could have been a tad bit more to the films benefit if she just stumbled at said house and “needed” to stay. It just really took me “out” of the belief ya know? Thought portrayal of the two cops were super dumb. Moments of goodness but fell apart with some directional choices. Overall, not the worst movie but I wasn’t a fan and I wouldn’t recommend. I wasn’t scared and almost started laughing… but not in the way the filmmakers wanted me to. That’s just my take! Feel free to disagree or agree. I’d always want people to enjoy and If you did… good for you!!! :)

You know what they say, dying is easy. Comedy is hard. That's why comedians are generally observant and make good story tellers. This is reminding me of the Key transition from well known funny guy, to serious and renound director. Trevor Moore would be proud.

This movie started SO good, and turned silly and goofy imo. The acting was great, weak and quite frankly stupid story and plot.

@@jonfreeman9682 this is true! I just learned the director does comedy movies normally. I’ll admit, if the point was to add a comedic flair to it, that changes my perspective of it lol

@@joeylazio5989 Justin Long fumbling with the gun is hilarious. Then he saves himself by throwing the girl down is comedy gold. And nice red herring where you think the first guy is a killer pretending to be renter and running a little shop of horror but turns out he's innocent. 🤣

I found myself laughing at some parts more than being on edge on what was happening. Felt like they could have done so much more of a story line of the father that would have made me far more interested. I cant say I enjoyed it but I also can't say it was terrible.

I was excited to watch this on HBO Max last night.. started off good I was on board 100%. But as the movie went on I really thought the turns it took were lame and didn’t make much sense. Totally didn’t pay off imho… 5.4/10

Ok but it was unpredictable. You have no idea where it's going.
