Couldn’t find your KZbin channel for awhile. I kept thinking “Edwin”. Managed to restumble upon your channel. So glad I did. No over sensationalisations, just good and relaxing fishing. And you’re not just going for ridiculously fat, caught 1000 times before, stocked carp.

Two good fish...we need the crayfish...good sign to hand them..out in the heart of nature...
@francolinobasco
@francolinobasco 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, but no we do not need crayfish they are devastating to fry recruitment and bankside burrowing damage which they cause. I would rather have a lower average fish sizes and more year classes of fish.
@tadhghayden8440
@tadhghayden8440 2 жыл бұрын
@@francolinobasco when I was first fishing at my local river I used to wade and net it with small species collecting nets borrowed from !ocal school to study the habitat in general. There were masses of native crawfish in amongst all the other crawling with a great array of invertebrates and little fish..It was a hugely rich ecosystem and the banks dud not seem very disturbed by any burrowing activities. Are they different in their effect on their surroundings than the signal crayfish? These days there are little or no crawfish of any kind in my local river. This I suspect is due to low oxygen levels in water?. Low crawfish numbers cause the otters to predate excessively on fish population .as in natural circumstances their diet I think is about 40 % crawfish if they are available. Am I wrong in this information?
@francolinobasco
@francolinobasco 2 жыл бұрын
@@tadhghayden8440 The problem is American signal crayfish are not native to the United kingdom and have wiped out our indiginous White Claw Crayfish and have over run,over populated many rivers causing regular damage to juvenile fish recruitment as well as bank side burrowing causing terrible erosion to river side banks. Otters do predate on crayfish which helps, however given that some rivers have had in excess of one ton of crayfish trapped per season it would take a lot of otter meals to dent these populations. I can show many sections of rivers (River Kennet, Loddon) peppered with holes along the banks where the crayfish burrow away and into the bank, I have watched mink digging crayfish out of the holes over the years, they are very destructive to the stability of river banks. Now leading on from this I would say Crayfish and water companies and their sewage discharges are two of the main problems in this country, otters are here to stay and back in the 1990s on my local river loddon I used to watch otters play with one and other, yet I still caught good fish and plenty of them. I think the main issue here is the damage being done year after year by water companies and extra housing infrastructure on some sections of rivers, all of which have a negative impact. I have gone off topic a bit but i cannot stress enough how damaging American signal crayfish have been to juvenile fish recruitment, I would rather be catching smaller sized fish and see more year classes of fish coming through than catching larger fish due to my rivers being over run by what was originally considered as a viable food source ( non indiginous crayfish). In an ideal world I would like to see water companies coming under public ownership too, but probably never going to happen. www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/feb/26/thames-water-fined-23m-for-raw-sewage-pollution-incident
@tadhghayden8440
@tadhghayden8440 2 жыл бұрын
Public ownership of all key national support systems I reckon....our country is very nature depleted compared to other party's of Europe. Swifts sand Martin's put on red list according to news last night...fish rarely get much attention...because their world is hidden from the casual observer, beneath the surface....though that spring watch series is putting their underwater technology to good use more often of late...on a positive note..mother nature is robust, tenacious of life and capable of marvellous comebacks...let the world get more farsighted about the consequences of its actions ..clearer positioned in its mind about the more important things to preserve in life...that's enough of such talk for me now...back to the silence of the waterways...

Really enjoying your videos Mark , real quality. The crays on my local river Thame are this year a real problem & some areas of the Thames as well. I was interested in how you overcome this menace? On an anal note maybe but I am interested in how you hook bread flake , lately I’ve been fishing bread on a hair but the chub are a dab hand at avoiding the hook , any help kindest regards Ian
@francolinobasco
@francolinobasco 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ian, I generally take two baits with me of the same base mix one of which is rolled very hard and the other softer with a better leak off, if crays are a pain i will switch to the harder baits and paste wrap them. There are two schools of thought I adopt with crayfish, either fish will move into a swim and push them out, or you may be better to move to another spot.

@francolinobasco
@francolinobasco 2 жыл бұрын
Ahhh the 1 million dollar question. I try to get on with it by fishing hardened baits, or moving to swims where the crayfish are less active because the fish are there. Or you can wait and see if the fish move in and push the crayfish off, that is about how i deal with them in fairness mate.
