Late summer's night fishing on the River Wye looking for larger barbel using a 22mm halibut pellet and feeder technique. Trying to avoid chub and smaller barbel by building confidence in allowing the fish to feed without using a hooklink.

Seeing that rod tip dancing like that takes me back to being young and striking at every twitch ' I remember fishing at aldwark on the ure behind the church with my dad and I struck at a twitch " I recast and low and behold it started to twitch again but this time I heard a voice say at the side of me strike at that and you'll feal a numb sensation in your left ear followed by a very hot warm glow " I sat on my hands . 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I have watched this video a few times and thought I had commented but it seems I have not. I recognise the stretch and have had a few good barbel sessions there. I liked the way you baited up using an open ended feeder without a hooklink and then changed over to a straight lead when you started to actually fish. How much water or liquid do you add to the pellets and how long do you leave them to soak? I have not fished at all since the end of October due to the amount of flooding and with the current cold spell but I have a few days booked on the Wye in March.

Hi Harry, It is one of my favourite summer evening haunts especially if it's just for dusk as HDAA allows night fishing and with a season ticket you can build a swim over a course of a few weeks. My preferd recipie for ground bait is mixed pellets (10mm down) and hemp in a 2 to 1 ratio with enough water to cover the pellets which I'll do when I cook the hemp as the hot water and hemp oils quickly soften the pellets, once it cools I'll bag it into smaller bags and freeze them for convince. In fact you'll see me breaking up the frozen bait as I'd of just grabbed a bag out of the freezer before I set off. It takes a bit of confidence to fish without a hook link but the fish will soon be shaking the feeder and the rod tip will be bouncing about then you've got to really sit on your hands until dusk. Hope this helps. I think winter as now arrived and will have a more shall we say traditional transition into spring, so fingers crossed we'll all have a good March. Another nice video. My night technique is PVA bag with small pellets/broken boilies and either meat on hook or if eels troublesome 20 - 26mm boilie.

I'm thinking about putting together a carp gear for barbel video so I'll be using your PVA and boilies approach, have you any more advice regarding rigs i.e boltrig, lead clip ect. Thanks.@@silentangling I don't fish for carp but I do use some carp type tackle. I always use separate hook traces using Sunset Amnesia mono which is memory free in 12 and 15 lbs BS. I tie the hair loops using a plastic loop tying tool in the hook link with a small swivel at the other end and these are stored on Gardner mini rig bins. For the running lead link I use a pulley rig bead with a snap link attached, these are very free running and do not tangle. To connect the hook link to the reel line I use a stainless steel hanging snap link. All sound complicated but is very simple really. When I use small meat baits I use STAY PUT HAIR RIGGERS to hair rig the meat, larger pieces I have the hook inside the meat. For boilies I hair rig them close to the hook and secure them with Gardner dumbbell boilie stops. For Barbel I use strong, large hooks in sizes 6 to 2, usually Gardner Talon Tip hooks or Drennan continental boilie hooks. I tend to use 20mm boilies Krill or Dynamite Source. I don't use a lot of ground bait and tend to use PVA mesh bags containing hook bait samples and pellets. I don't use pellets as hook bait just as feed. I use strong reel line in 12 or 15lbs BS either Varivas sport green or Gardner Hydratuff. Regards Steve

Hi Alan, I haven't explained it very well, I use the cage feeder without a hook link in the build up to dusk then I switch over to a lead and a hooklink (fluorocarbon) and yes as you spotted a size 6 (Drennan wide gape barbless). A massive thanks for your continued support and another great question. Please forgive me for any confusion as the trying to convey all the info in a "silent film" format is an interesting exercise.

Another great video 👏🏻👏🏻 I light the speeded up section whilst the rod is out (I may “borrow” that for one of mine 😉). The river looks very similar to the stretch I fish at Coalport other than it’s flowing the opposite direction?

@@silentangling Reply yes on the Severn. The section I fish is a club stretch, days only (my friends been on the waiting list for 3 years 😳). There are some day ticket stretches there as well

What mainline strength/brand do you use for barbel?

Hi, thank you for taking the time to comment. For summer fishing on the Wye I tend you use 10lb and my first choice would be Daiwa Sensor however any good mainstream brand would be great. Thanks again for your time and sorry for the late reply

Hi, @@Accyboom Due to larger weights required to hold bottom and lots of debris and snag fishing I'll set up to 12lb during the autumn into winter. Hope this helps and thank you for your time
