@@CatheidanMuch like toontown rewritten and other reboot projects, they are completely free-to-play and generate no income whatsoever. The coding, design, hosting, etc. is all done on a complete volunteer basis. If Disney or Mattel were to sue, they would have to prove damages. Because these reboots are generating 0 income, there is no provable loss of profit on behalf of Mattel. They’d lose money paying for lawyers for a case that would get nowhere.

I feel like the virtual worlds that survived the longest were the ones that had the least restrictive pay walling. Free users actually add alot to virtual worlds as they can still fill up multiplayer servers for mini games and chat with the paying players that these virtual worlds are actually after. Without free players that actually have a reason to play and keep playing, virtual world often do not have enough of a playerbase to maintain the gameplay experience.
@nova.noveiia Жыл бұрын
To be fair, Wizard101 still has very restrictive paywalling and still exists to this day. But, it's also a full MMORPG rather than just a virtual world.

@@nova.noveiia First thing I thought of. Still here almost entirely through the power of nostalgia, while also having some of the most aggressive monetization I've ever seen. Sooner or later it won't be enough anymore, especially with Ratbeard seemingly making it his mission to make the entire fanbase hate him

Considering Jumpstart lasted about 14 years, it did have variable membership systems that kept it from paywalls.. and also SoD's paywalls.
@warmachine5835 Жыл бұрын
@@nova.noveiia there's an interesting interaction noted in the monetization space regarding free vs paying players. Companies obviously want everyone to pay, but the free players 'pad out' the game and make it feel lived in. It's something that leaves me scratching my head about particularly predatory MTX schemes, because the "whales" need "guppies" to compare themselves to, and if you chase off all the free players with your monetization scheme, the whales have no reason to stick around and keep spending money. This makes it all the more mysterious when particularly onerous schemes are cooked up, as if the business folks who are supposed to know about this stuff didn't read the script.

During this current season the site issues were even worse than usual despite donations being up. Then suddenly mods started leaving the team and no one knew why. It was revealed there were fights going on about donation money and the lack of transparency with it. We’ve gotten more news recently and the old leader has almost fully stepped down and handed money control over to the new co-leaders. i played this when i was too young, stupid, poor, and didn’t speak any english right before it was shut down so i never got the full experience. All i remember was being extremely enthralled. I thought it was the most posh exclusive game ever. I was seriously pining after the super cute pets. It tickled every part of my little girl brain, like unbelievably so. It just felt really nice to have a space for girls and girly things without ridicule (even though i couldn’t grasp the scummy business practices) in my mind, that would be the ideal world if parents and grown ups didn’t exist and we could just do whatever we wanted. The idea of having and decorating your own room, going shopping for cute clothes, having pets and a big group of friends where you just have parties and sleepovers every day was actually heaven for me.

@@gays4holtby110I don't know anything about Pixie Hollow, but in general I can tell you that that's really, really hard for a browser based game like the one in this video without access to the original server side code. If you've got something like _Star Wars: Galaxies_ or even _Toon Town,_ mentioned at the start here, then you have access to a client - and you can spin that client up, looking at what it wants from the official servers that are now offline. With that knowledge you can slowly, painstakingly reconstruct your own server to redirect the client's requests to, and provide self-made answers. Or you take the easy route and find someone in the former developing team who leaks you the entire backend server code at once ;) That's how a lot of MMORPG private servers get their server software. It's kinda criminal and there's often loads of drama surrounding those deals. Seldomly the devs actually give out the code themselves so people can keep a game alive. There's one current example which had that happen, but I did forget the name of the project. Sorry if you already knew this, don't want to mansplain, but maybe someone reading this is curious about how these things work. Edit: Just saw the part about _Barbie Girls Rewritten._ Seems like they actually did it, or at least almost. They must have written most of it from scratch, which is very impressive! It's rather rare for browser games to do it, but hey, _Club Penguin_ also managed to be revives! So it's definitely possible.

The decision to cut a sponsorship on grounds of art theft accusations is not just a moral standpoint or principle for them, they are also financial decisions that impact their personal lives which shouldn't be made lightly and especially shouldn't have to be made while being pressured by their own audience.

i feel throwing in here that it's important to note that these sponsorships come with contracts that need to be upheld and aren't always easy to get out of. there's also factoring in these videos tend to be prescheduled too so she likely wasn't aware of any of that when renewing contracts or she is aware and is trying to to break it. they can prevent creators from talking about certain things too so if there's any radio silence on it that's likely why not that it's being ignored by her. just some things to keep in mind as these aren't always as cut and dry as people make them out to be.

I remember enjoying the barbie and myscene flash games way back, but by the time they attempted the mmo I was a teen and a bit old for the franchise, glad some folk are reviving the game though!

What a blast to the past. I vaguely remember the sheer thrill my sister and I shared when we opened those silly mp3 players around Christmas time. Super nostalgic

I basically watch anything you make despite the topic. I'm always impressed. And just seeing you dress up to fit the theme every video is a very big reason for that!

Oh my god; I went from "hm this looks familiar but I don't know if I played it growing up" to a sudden whirlwind of memories when you showed the world map. Thank you for unlocking another hidden box in my obsessive childhood online world hunting.

I WAS OBSESSED WITH THIS GAME OH MY GOD. i used to try and talk about hatsune miku but the chat was so restrictive it would only take words seemingly accepted manually in any form of text (and not a separate word) so you'd be like 'how the hell is hatsune miku profanity' it's my life goal to make VIRTUAL WORLDS WITH SOUL FOR THE PEOPLE RISE UP BARBIE GIRLS

i would love to see a video about disney create! it was like disney’s version of deviantart with drawing and animation tools as well as comic book makers. i spent so much time on it as a kid and one day it was just completely gone :( love your videos!

I was an early adopter of this game, and from the beginning I was obsessed. I BEGGED my parents to buy me the mp3 player as soon as I heard about them. To this day I think it was the most hyped I’ve been for a gift ever. Not even just for the VIP. My dad put a bunch of music from limewire on it, and I took it with me everywhere. I used it for quite awhile actually. I miss those days.

I honestly think you should do a video on Shopkins. They were really big back in the day and I was obsessed with collecting them (i had like 800 at one point) and it would be interesting to see its history and the controversies it had :3

this video unlocked a core memory. i had completely forgotten about this MMO. i played the hell out of barbie girls with my, at the time, best friend. i had the mp3 player but i vaguely remember the audio quality but being a child, i never really noticed it. i only cared about "dressing up" the mp3 player lol. i really hope the revival project works out because i would love to relive those memories ♥♥

This was one of my favorite games when I was younger. I even had the mp3, and it is how I learned to download music. i also had the high school musical sound track XD. I would spend all my time in the movie theatre and playing the mall game.

I've had memories of this that I could never find! I even made a lost games reddit post about this. I remember going to Walmart and getting those physical items to plug in, it was my birthday gift from my mom, I loved being VIP, it was the coolest thing when I was a kid. Been looking for this for forever, insane I just found this video on my algorithm now.

Me and my little sister LOVED playing on this website! We actually spent money on it to get VIP & we were having a blast! :D ...Until our accounts eventually got deleted because we didn't renew the VIP membership. D: I think we ended up starting over, but eventually we stopped playing due to growing up. I had many good memories on that website though. If it ever does come back I would love to play it again for a bit. :3 (I usually use emojis but I'm too lazy right now lol)

They did sell them in NZ I remember seeing them for sale at K-Mart around like 2009/2010. I was super lucky to have gotten one of these one Christmas. I had the green Barbie Girls MP3 and I absolutely loved it. I miss this virtual world so much, the Barbie movie promotion games were actually so much fun. I loved being able to customise my avatar and apartment, it was my perfect fantasy world for sure.

i actually was given a barbie mp3 when i was in fifth grade! iirc it was the one with blonde and pink hair -- but literally the thing that made the mp3 feel so cool to me was that 1. i used it when i walked to and from school while not having an iphone to use and 2. the earbuds featured these little holes at the corners where you could press in these little dangling flowers so that they would imitate earrings and i loved them so much despite already having pierced ears that i wore them during recess for a week straight omg
