this content is NOT disinteresting, it’s important! all of these games, as crunchy and ridiculous as they are, are art. especially one day when even more internet history of these games go missing, these are important archives. i’m sure twenty years from now, phd students and video game nerds alike will only have content like this to have source material for most games, especially flash games! i’ve read about how many games will totally go forgotten because of the loss of flash, or obsolescence of other formats. this is important to a lot of people!!

Rip chezz kids (i didnt know it but its somewhat lost)
@Naixatloz Жыл бұрын
Yes!! Game archiving is hugely important, and more often than not the developers and publishers don't care to assist with the effort, at least not in any publicly accessible way. And with the industry becoming easier and easier to get into, especially in the mobile sector, it is not humanly feasible to direct professional archival efforts to every game. So if there's some incredibly niche game you care about, whether it's already lost or not, do your part to preserve its history in whatever way you can. You might be the only person who ever makes that effort, but odds are if you care about that game, you're *not* the only person who cares enough to remember it.

The quote from Tony Espinoza at 6:31, likely refers to 'vehicles for conversation'. Youth workers especially love to use this term. It basically refers to driving a conversation with the use of an activity rather than just simply sitting down and talking. As an Autistic person, I find the concept very useful to keep in mind for life in general, as it's much less awkward to try to socialise with people when you are doing something together.

At the time though the "underground" nature of it added to the charm for me, a preteen. There were all kinds of mysteries to solve and the entire game had secret rooms, hidden passageways, and a strange melancholic tone to it. If I remember correctly A lot of the mysteries were surprisingly dark about kidnapping and runaways. Also the background paintings for the rooms were so incredibly beautiful and detailed, and the illustrations for all the food items were so interesting and unique. It was weirdly ethereal all around.

Oh my god I’m so excited to watch this!!! I played the original 2d version of the game RELIGIOUSLY until my parents banned me from it bc someone said “he//“ in the chat to bypass swear filters. By the time I got back online it was 3d (and worse in my opinion) and I was barely able to find any trace of the old game. Ty for doing these deep dives into our childhoods!

I would love to see a video about the game mentioned in this video when talking about Jumpstart, which is School Of Dragons - it's shutting down soon and even though the community was smaller than most wanted it was still an MMO that many people such as myself loved. Even though it lacked in many aspects such as graphics or things to do there's deffo a lot to talk about it. It was obviously an unfortunate victim of the whole micro-transaction thing that killed many other games but it still holds a special place in my childhood. Love you Izzy

I have two MMOs very dear to my heart. Their shut downs hurt. Millsberry, the only fully free one as it was a massive ad for General Mills, and Dizzywood, you would get powers and I felt like there were so many quests.

Millsberry was so good! I always felt guilty when I came back after a long time because of the character intelligence system. I remember you made your character smart by reading books, but if you didn't read for a long time they became stupid. I love these internet history deep dives, they are so weird and nostalgic. I keep remembering long forgotten websites and games that I spent a ton of time on as a kid and teen. Gaia Online, Neopets, Runescape, Flyff... Bionicle online? I think that was a thing. And a website called Elfwood that was kind of like Deviantart, but was fantasy-specific. My friends and I also had Piczo websites that we did a lot of chatting in the weird little comment boxes you could make. Weird to think that most of that is just gone forever now.

I love hearing about niche, small MMOs! Even if their story isn't well-known or exciting, it's still a story that's worth sharing. Although I've never heard of or played Super Secret, I do want to note a few MMOs that I remember playing excessively and I wish more people new about them. Bella Sara - another comment mentioned this, but man, it was such a wonderful and beautiful game. It started out as trading cards which turned into an MMO/browser game of a sort. Some things you could do included taking care of your own horse, gaining exclusive horses and items through codes from the cards, lots of mini-games, and exploring an open world. School of Dragons - you mentioned this in your video, but I thought I'd bring it up since it's actually shutting down on June 30th after a long run! It's not as niche, but it definitely has an interesting community and history (also, dragons!! flying!!). I'm super sad to see it go since I feel like I've grown attached to my pixel dragons. Spirit Animals (?) - these were a series of books from years ago which gained their own MMO. Not many memories of this game in particular - I remember you got to pick your own animal companion and go on dungeon-style quests with other people. I remember being super into it for a time.

Hi Izzzy! I feel crazy for remembering Fantage, which I brought my entire neighbourhood to try. The game had a similar story to this one: started out very wholesome, and then had this weird...shift. Understandably, but it seems odd that despite the many people commenting that they wanted the old version, it would appear as though the developers did not take customer reviews. An interesting thing which I found looking up for this was also how it was claimed that the company treated its employees really badly, which as a child, didn't really click up. But thank you for the video, entertaining as always!
