I think this Live version is much hotter and better than the original BS&T studio track!, even though the original version has some great production effects, string arrangements, and was so much a part of my adolescent development when I was about 15 yrs old that it was burned into my brain! Al Kooper, you had so much for your vision! You have so much heartfelt soul to write a song such as this..., plus you were great friends with and played with the great Michael Bloomfield. This is a wonderful performance on guitar from Steve Katz as well. Also a bit hotter than the original! Just Wonderful!!!!!!!

This cut is from the 2-CD set 'Soul of a Man' (recored at NYC's Bottom Line). Kooper uses 3 basic line-ups - The Blues Project, Child is Father to the Man and the Rekooperators. On this track it's the Child... line-up, with Jimmy Vivino (gtr.), Will Lee (bs.), Anton Fig (drums), horns by Randy Brecker, Fred Lipsius, Tom 'Bones' Malone and Lew Solof. 'Texas' Jim Fiedler (original BS&T) guests on bass. Vivino, Lipsius and Kooper (organ) do the solos. Overall it's a great set of great tunes.

Ok - granted I was only 14 on that Saturday in 1967, and definitely not on anything (my dad took us), but I could swear that we saw Al with the Blues Project - and then he introduced his new band - BS&T a couple of hours later. I can't say I heard this song, but I remember *someone* introducing a new band - and of all the folks there, only Al was on twice. It was a stripped down, hornless version - but it had to have been introduced as BS&T because my dad bought the album as soon as it was available. I have always loved Kooper's voice - As the Years go passing by was only surpassed for me by Gary.
