i love patti's stamina, natural power, resonance and ease, but i also love barbra's more classical approach to singing, her phrasing, dynamics, clarity and breath control is unmatched. they also are two very different artists which is a reason why their vocal styles are so different, barbra is a more broadway-esque "sophisticated" vocalist, while patti is an amazing entertainer, who surely puts on a show with her singing, and has more of a churchy soulful background that doesn't require the classical approach that barbra's music requires

I am a forever Patti fan but let me say this in all fairness Barbra did a fantastic job but God my God that Patti can sang her heart out. Kudos to both of these lovely gems that we will always treasure.

Patti once said God gave her a voice and she will use it until she can't anymore. She is a more dramatic and passionate singer. She puts her heart and soul into it and tends to over sing more often than not. Babs is more effortless and controlled and reserved and she sounds "strained" when reaching for higher notes. They are both great at their craft however they come from two different backgrounds. I'd like to see Babs hold those notes while kicking off her heels and rolling on the floor. Would be a treat. I don't think she ever would, that's the book smarts versus street smarts difference. And both work brilliantly for each of them.

There are numerous Mezzos out there with free and ringing upper-belts and notes that high (E5+) don't sit in normal Soprano's tessitura in the first place. But Barbra ain't a Mezzo, well at least not for a long portion of her career. Barbra was a Lyric Soprano and she can "hit" those notes with clarity and resonance (even to the present day) as she has showcased many times in the performances of Since I Fell For You, Jubilation, Space Captain, Happy Days Are Here Again, Don't Rain On My Parade, Crying Time, etc.

They both are living legends. You really cannot vote btw the two... they both mix and use their head voices, perfectly. If not, they could not still be singing at their ages, least we forget Shirley Bassey, too! Are you listening, to the lost voices of Mariah,(RIP) Whitney and Aguilera. Barbra and Patti are voices of legends. Voices, to which, most if not all, female pop and musical theatre sings aspire, copy and admire. Both have the freakish alignment of the chest, belt and head voice, with almost no noticeable break. Thus no one can sing any of their signature songs to compare! Barbra to me, is the greatest female pop vocalist in recording history. Patti is amazing and God touched with His finger her voice too. But Streisand's voice is also, smooth and so beautiful sounding...effortless and just plain pleasing to the ear. Even way up there at F# and G's!

Saying this as a bigger Barbra fan than Patti, I think you could have used better notes for Patti. Anyways, Patti and Barbra both have solid techniques. Barbra, as always, wins C5-Eb5. On E5 they tie (Not in this video, but in general). Patti is one of the best upper belters so I'd give her F5 and above. Overall, as a singer, Barbra wins because of her superior musicianship (Patti tends to oversing). However, I do like both.

Patti's artistic merit is unquestionable. Most singers haven't survived as long as she did in a brutal industry, nor be in 2 girl groups with different styles or a rock/soul group labelle whose musical style advanced through numerous albums. Then there was a soloist from the 70s, 80s, 90s and 20+ years in the 2000s with all the transitions if music between. A siner capable with singing with anyone,, harmonizing as well as dominating multiple professional singers and power houses at once. Find artistic merit to match that, ok!

I like this videos, but there is no comparing these two women. Barbara has a much more mezzo almost operatic tone. She was meant for Broadway. Also (here's the kicker), she's white. Patti has a much raspier soulful belt, that's the signature tone of her voice. Also, she's black. These two people of different colors, tones, and genres can't quite be compared.

Sorry, but as much hate as I may get for saying this....I think people overrate "big" voices unnecessarily, as if having a big voice or have loud and aggressive belts is necessary to sound soulful. I disagree entirely. Patti is a legend, I'll never deny it, but I also won't deny that she sounds like a whiny cat sometimes (be fucking offended if you want to). Not every song sounds great in that "take it to church" style.....Patti is a great human, and a powerful singer but that power, even if executed with great technique, sounds more like a pretentious show off to me rather than genuine soul. Barbra is a gifted vocalist, and there's a strong security and genuineness in her interpretation of songs. Without discrediting Patti for anything, I choose Barbra as a defiance against the notion that one needs a big voice to be a respectful vocalist. Barbra is an intelligent, dynamic and very soulful vocalist, but not soulful by the church but every word she sings is colored with beauty and emotion. Also, her voice soars beautifully and can express many emotions...unlike Patti who always just sounds screamy (maybe technically great, but still screamy). So yes, I choose Barbra while respecting Patti for who she is.

Barbara's C5 and G5 are the greatest, they hurtle at a straight no-warble sustained light year speed from the vocal chords creating a perfect whistle sound that is celestial, unlike Patti who warbles and it isn't as sustained in its perfection as Barbara, and Patti gets pitchy at the end also.

I find Barbra to be MUCH MUCH superior to Patti technically. I feel Patti's styling relies solely on volume and range. It can't be denied that Barbra from F and above is not too comfortable with a full belt (I much prefer her more mixed "belts" to a shouted note though). Patti's notes are pure hollering, they may come off as powerful or strong to church people and fans of gospel and soul but they're in essence, just screams. Everyone here is talking about Patti's powerful notes, but they forget that she uses belting for this, and belting has a very bad effect on her voice. Strong notes are heard in some places. Patti sounds somehow painful in some places. Barbra uses a more sophisticated and safer technique, which makes her sound seventy-seven great. Not the height of the note is important but its quality. In terms of technology, Barbra is much better than Patti in terms of height. Patti wins but Patti is soprano and Barbra is mezzo-soprano. For me, the quality of Barbara's singing is much better than that of many singers. Barbra is a legend! Sorry for the mistakes. English is not my native language.

"Belting has a very bad effect on her voice." You are not right. She's been using belting technique over 50 years that any other singer couldn't in the history of music! Yes, belting is tough vocal technique (because most singers is using it improperly, so they must replace it with mixed voice which is easier vocal technique) and that's why most singers are scared of trying to use it in live performances! Nowadays Patti can blow away everyone she sings with, and she is 74, not mention her vocal power at the very start of her carier. :)))

@@Никола-х1м It may be a mystery to you, but belting is mixed. It is impossible to sing in a chest register higher than D5. It is dangerous and very harmful. Secondly, Patti does sound extremely painful in some notes. Thirdly, Barbra is much better as a vocalist and here you need to understand that singing only in belting is very stupid and ugly. A good vocalist can boast of more than screaming beyond the first octave. Patti's singing can hardly be called beautiful, unlike Barbra, who can sing beautifully even without a belt. Last year Barbra was on tour and her sound at 77 was perfectly balanced and pleasant. It's silly to compare them, but anyone who understands at least something in vocals will say that Barbra is a better vocalist than Patti and will be right. And yes, I was mistaken about the belt, it's not dangerous, but why sing with the belt always and everywhere I don't understand.

Patti belts aren't at all predictable. Who said Patti is a legend? Patti Labelle?? Besides millions of ppl, singers who are up and coming, veterans, and legends (maybe even Barbra) , her influential career spanning over 4 decades, and me?

Oh Please... Patti Labelle is nothing next to her rival Aretha Franklin who's definitely a true legend ! And I believe all her belts are predictable because I know what she's exactly going to do even when it's the first time I watch a performance of hers.

I love both these legends they've inspired a lot of artists today including my Queen Bey. But belting is really for Patti. They both have the technique, but Patti (for me) won because of her EASE to each note (not to mention mother can go beyond G5 while resonating).

Well they hit the same highs so they are equal that way. But for me Patti sometimes sounds more like she is screeching in a few of those higher notes, whereas Streisand still sounds like she is singing. And Patti seems to need to squat down and shake to get up there, whereas Barbra just stands there and seems to effortlessly go there. They are both great. But for me Barbra is the best there ever was. In her prime nobody could top her.

Patti all the way...she hit the note, smacked it...flipped it and rubbed it down... just down right spanked it. Now watching Patti perform she puts deep emotion into her singing...she takes you with her. She makes you feel what she feels and that's very important. She reaches out to you and say come go with me. Isn't that what an entertainer/ singer suppose to do? You have to reach the soul of your audience...my opinion only... Barbara is much more reserved she does not fill the gap between herself and her audience nearly as much as Patti does. It just amazes me how anyone would even compare the two (the sound from both women is as different as night and day it's like comparing a swan and a humming bird they are both birds but totally different classes)...but that's America for ya black folk been singing while coming cross de water...now white folk want to take that away from them. Not saying that Barbara is not good, she is...but her shows begins and end with her voice and that's ok for some. Me? I want to feel what that singer is feeling when she or he is belting out that song, I like to connect on the level that it feels almost personal. Patti takes you there and beyond. Barbara not so much... and being white... color-- let's face it has A LOT to do with who gets what.. the Grammy, the most money...the biggest house everything. And of course that applies in music too.
