A MOTHER who has alopecia and recently had a double mastectomy is opening up about how ‘it’s okay to be different’. Professional photographer Marisa from Michigan, USA was diagnosed with alopecia at age nine. She wasn’t given a full reason for her hair loss, only that it may have been stress induced. After years of accepting her body, Marisa found out she had a high risk of breast cancer, and chose to have a double mastectomy in February 2021. She told Truly: "I found out that my percentage for breast cancer and ovarian cancer are high risk. I was still breastfeeding, so I decided once my son was done breastfeeding I was going to have the preventative surgery - because that was going to give me the best chance to watch my son grow up." Marisa has learnt to love her unique body by photographing herself and posting it on Instagram. She said: "My bald head and boobless body is beauty, it’s me.”

But she didn't have cancer! She has a family history of cancer. The answer to that is to carefully monitor oneself. You might also wish to avoid anything that has any possible link to breast cancer like bra-wearing. IMO is it highly unethical to remove healthy, functioning body parts because there is a risk of future cancer. Any of us can get cancer at any time!

@@Mar.1634 oh geeze. Take a deep breath. Just because he’s a man doesn’t mean he’s not allowed to have an opinion. Especially when that opinion is kind and supportive. He’s right. Just dealing with one of these conditions would be incredibly difficult for damn near every woman. But losing your hair and your breast would break some women. They’re the most traditionally outwardly signs of femininity. I’m not saying that that’s what makes you a woman, or that there’s absolutely anything wrong with not having breasts, long hair, etc. Obviously it’s about who you are, and not your outward appearance. But it would be tough, at least at first, for most of us. She is an INCREDIBLY strong woman. And she’s absolutely stunning inside and out. Being a man hater isn’t a good look, and it definitely doesn’t make you a good feminist. We’re all supposed to be equal. That’s kinda the whole point.

I'm glad she found her way to be happy! I have alopecia too and have tried going bald, but it didn't work for me. I've just always hated being at the centre of attention. And it's also annoying how everyone feels the need to ask about your health (even strangers) and will sometimes treat you differently. For me getting a wig was definitely the best decision (also just more convenient with avoiding sunburns and not having to shave my head daily). I do hope that hair loss can become more normalized, it's just hair it shouldn't have to be such a big deal.

I've come to realize that self acceptance It's really going to determine how people are going to respond to us. Those that really love and accept us as the way we are i.e. Ourselves even. Growing up with the Alapicia was preparing you . I think breast R overrated always have I used to have a very big breast I hated it so much I think I literally wished them away there are more average now which is a blessing because I hated them when they were big and truthfully not having them wouldn't really bother me I've taken care of women in my nursing career who had done the same thing such as yourself and we had had that conversation especially like yourself once they serve their purpose of Nourishing your children You might as well get rid of them if cancer runs in the family. My neighbor did it but she had the rebuild she has the same condition that you do I forgot exactly what you guys call it but cancers run in her family and SHE showed the marker. Thank you my daughter has been diagnosed with Alopecia and she is 8. It all started when she was 7. She was struggling but with seeing more people like you that are strong and proud of who you are she is doing much better. Many steps have been take to help her but I’m thankful for you, your story and journey.

Representation matters! We definitely have to continue to work towards normalizing every body. Cause we all have hang ups and it’s exhausting. Love your confidence. Keep doing what you’re doing!

Ppl in comment sections come across more warm than in real life. This is coming from someone who's been bullied most of my life. Its just interesting.

What you have said is very true. People are usually too quick to judge. But when we listen to someone's story, we often see things differently. It's like the old story of "I didn't like you at first. I thought you were.... (whatever adjective you want to insert) but then I got to know you, and you're nothing like I thought." We just don't wait to get to know each other before we make a decision and pass comment. Sorry you're being bullied. I also have been bullied all my life. Not because of my looks, but because I haven't spoken up for myself. I haven't liked myself or respected myself. I've allowed people to walk over me. I've finally come to realise that if you don't like or respect yourself, it shows. And people treat you likewise. I got very angry before I realised what was happening. First I started thinking that I wasn't going to put up with people treating me bad. But things didn't change until I realised that I didn't like me. I didn't like me so people didn't like me, which made me believe that there was something wrong with me. It was a vicious circle. A self fulfilling prophecy. It stopped when I realised this. And started to know that there was nothing wrong with me. I had qualities and talents. They might not be always the same as everyone else. I thought actually I'm nice. Then it was ' heck I'm great' and so on. I hope this helps. 👍

I’m so relieved to see and hear another woman like myself. I have my hair, but after my breast cancer diagnosis and double mastectomy I shaved my head even though I never had chemo causing my hair to fall out. Shaking my head was liberating! I was boobless and bald. I wanted to show the world how possible it is to be feminine and beautiful. But fear held me back. I’m not as brave and confident as this lady. So I say, I admire you, I respect you. Keep up the inspiring example.

Thank you for this video!! I am part of lgnt and I'm still learning to see that you don't need a chest or be masculine all the time to be nonbinaey. I know it's not the same thing but it helps me see that.

This is one of the best videos I've seen on this channel. How she still says she's feminine after making the hard decision to have them removed and the hair. They are a part of it for sure but not everything. Takes a lot of courage. As a guy dealing with alopecia I hide it too until I gotta shave it lol.

I am a senior and I have no idea what the right words are to write except I wish I had been a woman like you in my younger years. Talk about the power of the human spirit you possess. You are what the world needs. Your son will grow up to be a fine human being because of you. You have my respect and admiration.
