Join the Barefoot Doctors as we assess the damage to our Leoaprd 45 Catamaran after it has spent 8 months on the hard stand while we were away and sailing across the Atlantic Ocean from South Africa to the USA...
See what the damage is and whether we did the right thing in keeping it out of the water in a boat yard with work being done all around it...
We also share the pros and cons of keeping your boat in the water or on the hard for the off season....
Portofino 52 Unique Features
As we have a travel lift dropping Expedition Barefoot back in the water, we reflect on how our new Portofino 52 has the unique features of having lifting points at the four corners of the boat, allowing it to be lifted out the water in remote locations with the most basic of cranes that are available all over the world!!!!! Another unique feature making this Portofino 52 such an amazing and user friendly, world cruising boat.
We also are highlights of the week 4 of our Patreons joined us on Expedition Barefoot for a week of sailing, pleasure and experiencing what living aboard in really like....This was the first Patreon sailing event was enjoyed by 4 Patreons who had a wonderful week in the Gocek and Fethiye area - they all claim to have benefitted immensely from the experience and are much more clear on their sailing dreams as a result!!! Join up if you want to have those opportunities...
Our Patreon option starts from only $3 per week, and will allow our supporters to enjoy live updates, join us for sailing events in Aegean Greece, May 2024. Then in Dubai Jan 2025 (aboard the new Portofino 52) join us for the launching party and test sails!!! We are also offering boat build tours with sailing off Dubai to share the progress of the P52 build and provide whatever sailing or life discussions that YOU want us to provide during all of these events..... It is a very exciting prospect and we have been requested repeatedly to give advice, take folk sailing, teach sailing techniques etc etc.... So here it is!!!
Any Patreons will have the choice to join us for these events which are usually about 5 days to be up close and personal with Eli and John and learn from their expertise... There will be sailing trips, excursions and chats during the events and the subjects will be designed to suit the participants that will be there. Patreons will receive all the sailing and talks with the Barefoot Doctors without any cost but will only have to cover their own travel, food and accomodation costs.
All Patreon proceeds go to Exqisit Life Foundation to support TUFMINDS Mental Resilience and Suicide Prevention Program worldwide.
Some come Barefoot with us on this exciting journey - now physically and in person with Patreon if you wish!!!
Binge watch and come barefoot with us as we travel and explore the planet, mostly from the water but sometimes through the minds of others as we provide aid and support where needed through the amazing TUFMINDS solutions!
WHAT IS TUFMINDS
The free TUFMINDS program is released as a smartphone program under the Exqisit Life Foundation Charity, a registered not for profit and requires financial support to fund the free program. TUFMINDS saves lives by intervening at the point of suicide and pulling everyone to higher levels of mental resilience, wellbeing and functioning. it also creates better attitudes, resilience and coping - all very important for sailors facing difficult situations at sea.

What a fantastic experience for your patrons. Having sailed from Bodrum to Akyaka to Kusadasi last year on our friend's FP Saba, your video brought back memories that will stay with me forever. What a wonderful gift you have given them. Turkey's people are some of the kindest, warm hearted people I have ever meet.

Fantastic episode guys. I apologise I caught it so late this week. I've been busy. So much in this episode to talk about. I think the favourite part of this episode for me would be to learn how to tie a bowline with my eyes closed. But you guys have so much you can teach me. I'll have to look into becoming a patreon and coming over so we can facilitate that. With respect to storage - I think your decision may depend, like so many things, on where you strengths lie. For me an in water decision might be more favourable. AS a scuba diver, I can easily do the bottom clean, although I haven't priced anodes recently, so I may regret hat decision. You would definitely have to pay someone to come check the boat all the time (on and off) for line tension and hull damage, so that would be a cost of course. Jon you should have taken a can of INOX with up the mast. Oh and I have you tub of hair moose, so we must catch up over Christmas/New Years. I have to pop up too Brisbane for my father's 93rd. so let me know dates and times via email. I love you voice overs Eli, however the text elements could be a fraction of a second longer. I noticed some were quick and some longer on this episode. I think 2.5 - 3 seconds would suffice. My Brother sails a trimaran out of Morton Bay sailing club, I may be able to get you both a sail on that while you're there. Leave it with me. He's just coming back from Annapolis Boat show. Look his work up on "Prophesy Trimaran" in Instagram. His name is Graeme. Anyway it's been a great vid this week. All the best for Turkey. Fair 💨's and following 🌊's from here in Cronulla, Google it and hit 'images'.

HI Garth, as always thanks for your detailed comments! We will be in Brisbane from about 30/11 to 8/12, then 20 Dec to mid Jan and in Mackay the other times until End Feb when we return to the Med... Having a sail on Morton Bay sounds great if it is possible!!!

@@barefootdoctorssailing8567 Ah those dates look a little difficult. I have holidays with my Daughter in the Blue Mountains from the 3/12-5/12. But I'll see what I can organised. Leave it with me, I'll talk to Graeme and see. Cheers.

Being able to lift with a crane is going to depend on the boat’s weight and and distance from the crane. As to the four lifting points in the corners of the boat that might not be the spot to reduce lifting stresses. If I recall correctly the 2/3 location minimizes the stress in a uniform object.
@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 8 ай бұрын
Hi thanks for the comment. As I understand it the reason for using the four corners is to insure that the cable is running up from the four corners do not rub or put strain on the shrouds or the mast. The boats aluminium structure has the strength to be lifted from those corner points while fibreglass boats could not do this, as I understand…

You really should inspect that boat for bubbles and soft spots in the fiberglass. Robertson and Caine has been building absolute junk for the past couple of years. They force the owners to sign nda forms before providing support or any repair help so that is why there is very little information about the defects. It wouldn't be surprising that the fire on your 50 was due to faulty wiring.
@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 8 ай бұрын
Hi Chris, the fire on our Leopard 50 was not due to a fault of the boat but human error - the details will be released shortly but hav been under legal action (not against Leopard) to get our insurance payout... We have sailed 3 leopards no long distances and my standard is which of the production brands will I be happiest to put my life at risk in, and LEOPARDS come out on top of the others that do not have the strong bulkheads, quality wiring and have the decades of sailing on their bottoms all around the world... We are moving to aluminium for the performance, shallow draft and beachability but not because they are poorly built. The broad sailing evidence and lack of systemic problems gives me the confidence to put my life in a Leopard cross the Southern Ocean storms above any other brand... Each to their own though and everyone can have different opinions - I have sailed more miles and in worse seas than many (40,000+) and built my own boat so these are not my first boats, unlike some...

You both look fantastic! Sea salt and sand definitely agree with you both. 😊 That was a lot of work cleaning the Sahara sand off your catamaran. I live in New Mexico in the high desert and sand covering everything is a daily cleaning routine. I can’t imagine what my house would look like if I left and came back after 8 months! 😳🫣 When you put it on the hard did they offer the option of shrink wrapping the whole boat? So excited for your next sailing adventure and welcome back to your beautiful Leopard. 🎉❤

In my last comment I stated that the Portifino was I bit heavy well I was wrong. She is a way heavy for a lightship displacement of 19 metric tons. Remember lightship displacement is the weight of the boat without people gear and water and fuel. She is not a performance vessel however still a much better choice that a Lagoon or Leopard. The build quality on those boats are crap compared to your aluminum Portifino.
@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 8 ай бұрын
The lightship displacement of the P52 is16tonnes. The original design of 19 tonnes was for artic exploration and we did not want that so the design was modified… The polars we had calculated was at 18.5 tonnes and shows great speeds but we will find out for sure after the launch. We are wanting to do 12-15knots easily and without stress and will not be pushing it to 20knots, even though the figures suggest it can do that. The 42 ft cat I built sailed 55nm in2.45hrs (20 knots all the way) in 20-25knots of wind but I am over that adrenaline seeking and now just want to get there “fast” but easy and no risk…

@@barefootdoctorssailing8567 16 tons vs 19 tons makes a big difference. My design too is not performance and I too don’t enjoy going faster that 16 knots. My payload is 6 tons to cwl what is you payload ?

Hi Jero, sorry we are dealing with so many boats! our new Leopard 50 burnt in Aug 2021 and we got a replacement Leopard 45 in May 2022 which we are now sailing each year until the Portofino 52 is completed. The Atlantic Crossing was on a friends Leopard 50, Mark O'Leary so I helped him sail the boat from South Africa to USA.... Now back on our own Leopard 45 sailing int eh Med again and will sell this L45 late next year. Is that now all clear for you?
