Apropos to discussions on insulation and flammability, SV Delos are considering how to insulate their aluminum boat, where for holding back water, corrosion resistance and ease of insulation spray on foams have a lot of advocates in the comments. However, here is the one I focus on by Duke Nero: ' As a Fire Safety Engineer, i 100 % support this suggestion. Metal won't burn of course, but if a fire spreads to your insulation via conduction, you have no chance of putting it out. To add to this, if your insulation is plastics-based, it will melt and form a very, very hot pool at the bottom of your hull. This has happened in buildings many times, and the problem is that even if you manage to put out the fire, it re-ignites due to the hot pools at the bottom. I would advise that you avoid foaming plastics alltogether, even though I understand that condensation and general water proofing is priority number 1. Do not overlook fire proofing. You don't need it until you REALLY need it.' I very much hope that the solution you choose will minimise this risk

Hi David, thanks for that info and yes we are very concerned about inflammability of the products because of our past experience. For the foam inside our furniture, Portonfino has investigated it and found a foam that will not BURN, but run a fire it melts and turns black but when you take the flame away, it does not burn itself. (This will be saved in some future episode too.) We still need to find out the details of the insulation that PF will use for the insulation and will share that with everyone too in due course.

We debated the same questions on sails. Turns out the color won’t really impact longevity, the only food for thought is the wear and tear on a racing boat in the Med is going to be different than cruising boat in the tropics. I’d just mentally prepare for them to last 5 years and if they last longer then that’s a bonus! (We choose some sexy black Doyle Stratis sails built by our friend in Mallorca).

Thanks for the info Kirk! Yes, we were told that the black sails did not age faster than the lighter colours which I was surprised about as I would have thought they would get much hotter in the sun and therefore age faster...

WOW !! Another great episode John and Eli! Great to see and hear from you both again. Um, I apologise for my continual questions each week. So what was your verdict of the sails? How are they holding up? I vaguely remember you having some concern over which sizes of FFR & IFS (I think they were the choices weren't they?) to get, what did you decide? Do you think you'll be happy with your purchase, or shall you cancel your order and start the research all over again?
@barefootdoctorssailing8567Ай бұрын
Hi Garth, yes we were happy with the sail condition consider the 3 years of heavy use they have had. We will be going for those sails for the main and self taking jib and have decided on the Code 0 on a cable (to be able to keep up permanently), the PFR for performance downwind sailing and will have the Oxley for tradeqind downwind sails..

Hi Docs ... Have a look at sailing dawn hunters Al epedition cat they've picked up in S. Africa . They've had a few jobs to do and some tidying up but its got some good bones and a known designer pedigree... Gunboat related.

Since you are getting an in boom furling main sail, it seems that it will have to use a "bolt rope" on the sail sliding in a "luff groove" on the mast to connect the luff of the sail to the mast. I have a question about the "head board" on the main sail. When the sail is at full hoist, the halyard can be rigged to angle away from the mast. This pulls the head board toward the mast, as well as upward, and life is good. A problem can occur when the main is reefed. When the sail is partially lowered, the halyard no longer pulls the head board toward the mast. It only pulls it straight up. In this case it's up to the bolt rope to hold the headboard to the mast. The leech tension of the mail is trying to pull the head board down and away from the mast. I have had problems where the upper few feet of the bolt rope pulls out of the luff groove if I sheet the main in very tightly when reefed. This has an adverse effect on sail shape. When this happens the sail won't lower just by gravity, I have to pull it down by hand, refeed the bolt rope into the luff groove, and rehoist the main. Not good. I changed the bolt rope system to roller battcars on a mast track. It works great. This won't work with in boom furling as the sail must detach from the mast in order to roll into the boom. I remember seeing a system that had a mast track with a luff groove in the center of it, This had several roller bearing cars holding the head board to the mast track with the bolt rope connecting the rest of the sail luff. How will your system work and who makes it?
@barefootdoctorssailing8567Ай бұрын
HI Jack, the system we are getting is from Maxspar who do the boom furlers for the maxi yachts and I do not know the details of the luff rope / car for the head. The forces on the top of the sail are enormous, esp if you gybes I would hope we have a car but we will share the systems in detail when we see them. Given that they work of the maxi yachts, we have faith that Enrico from Maxspar will have not trouble with our "little" 52 footer! (That was his quote - "this is only a small boat, it will be easy!"

Just watched Delos 2.0 latest episode, wondering how Portofino will isolate the Aluminum hull, spray or what? Condensation must be the biggest concern and also access to problem areas under the isolation?

Hi Benny, We have sorted our foam for the furniture that will not burn but still have to find out about the insulation for the hulls. Will share on future episodes.
